Vehicle Detail

Up for sale we have a 1984 Mercury Marquis Brougham sedan (not to be confused with the Grand Marquis). This car is sharp, and though it has imperfections like most any 26 year old modern classic, it is a great example of a neat sedan that you just don't see anymore. It's hard enough to find its sister car, the Ford LTD, let alone the Mercury, which was made in far fewer numbers to begin with. I bought this car because I was struck by its originality, uniqueness, and potential. It was a one owner car -- the original title from September 4, 1984 showed 8 miles when I took the car home. The older lady who owned it seemed to stay mostly local, so the mileage is accurate and original -- there are only 69,517 miles on this car! As you can see in the pictures, the car is adorned with a couple AAA decals on the rear bumper and also a Medic Alert sticker on the driver's vent window. If you choose to remove them, it will be an easy job, but I left them as they highlight the history of the car a little. It runs great -- makes smooth and reliable power out of the electronically fuel injected 3.8 liter six-cylinder. The C5 automatic is slick, and shifts smoothly and with great, fast response. It's a tight, well performing car that is fun to drive. One reason for that, as you're likely aware, is the Fox body heritage. This car shares a tremendous amount of its parts and design with the Ford Mustang, Mercury Capri, Ford Thunderbird, and Mercury Cougar, among a litany of others. If you were so inclined, you could make a wonderful wolf in sheep's clothing out of this car by installing a Mustang H.O. 5.0 and the transmission of your choice -- perhaps a manual such as a T5. Or you could just leave it the way it is and enjoy it, as I have. Owning this car has been very rewarding. I love looking at it, as it is a nice design from a different automotive era. The cockpit is also a great place to conduct the business of driving: it's nearly in the condition you'd have found it in 26 years ago. I find it very much like stepping back to 1984. The checkered velour of the seats is in remarkable condition -- I'm awed every time I look at them. The original radio works great, and the factory speakers never crackle, pop, nor miss a beat. Since this is a Brougham and not a base model, it's pretty well loaded by Marquis standards of the time. It has remote fuel door release, remote trunk release, power windows, power locks, power steering, power driver's seat, leather wrapped steering wheel, and A/C, though the A/C needs a charge. Since I bought the car, I've gone through it extensively, improved its condition markedly, and spent a lot of money in the process. Here's the laundry list of the things I've taken care of: -- Headlights (Sylvania Silverstar low beams, Sylvania Xtravision high beams -- they light the night!) -- PCV valve, oil, filter -- Serpentine and V-Belts -- Brake lines (metal hard lines) -- Distributor cap and rotor -- Spark plugs and wires, fuel and air filter -- Thermostat and gasket -- Transmission crossmember (holds transmission mount in place), along with crossmember bushings -- Fuel filter -- Throttle position sensor -- In-tank fuel pump -- Fuel pressure regulator -- Engine coolant temperature sensor It also has four fresh tires with lots of tread left. They're balanced and smooth down the road. The radiator is recent, as are the upper and lower hoses to it. The battery is also fresh and provides plenty of starting power. The brakes are smooth and free of vibration or noises. The oil has always been changed regularly -- I use Motorcraft 5W-30 synthetic blend oil and Motorcraft FL-1A filters. Further, the Ford 3.8s are good on gas -- 26 MPG on the highway can be attained while cruising in the high 60 to low 70 MPH range. The car passed the Massachusetts state inspection easily, and has a valid sticker. I would not hesitate to drive this car anywhere -- I have taken it on road trips as far away as Orono, ME -- about 250 miles from me. This is an awesome car that is ready to go. It needs nothing but a loving owner. In summary: this is a great car with lots of new parts. I've given it lots of love and attention in addition to the original owner before me who did the same. Though it is not a top notch show car, and does have a spot of rust here or there, it is very solid and presents very well. On my way in to a restaurant to have lunch one day, I was approached by no less than a priest from a church across the street who went out of his way to compliment me on the car. He then went on to discuss the Fox body heritage of the car and its mechanical commonality with the Mustang (I kid you not). It was very cool to see the car appreciated like that, and I hope that the next owner will feel similarly. I hope this Marquis finds a good home. It's a special car with lots more years of great running, and I've sure enjoyed owning it. Feel free to contact me with any questions -- I'm glad to help. I will happily meet your shipper in my driveway, or you can come pick the car up in person, whichever you prefer. As you would expect with any car of this vintage, it is sold as is.
