Vehicle Detail
This 1951 Studebaker Commander-Land Cruiser is in top driving condition and a real eye-catcher. It comes with plenty of extras so you can start cruising to your favorite shows right away. It features the famous and peppy “Commander” V8 engine-the first year of it’s use, Studebaker / Detroit Gear Automatic drive, power brakes, radio, clock, Climatizer, defroster, electric windshield wipers, directional signals and more. You get two bullitnoses with this car, the correct 1951 nose, plus an original 1950 all-chrome nose. I personally prefer the 1950 nose over the 51 which is why I fitted an outstanding example to the front of this car. The original 51 nose come with the car and is easily converted back just by swapping out noses. You get both! MECHANICAL CONDITION: No issues whatsoever. This car is ready to drive anywhere anytime. Take it across town of across the country. The engine starts right away and purrs nicely. The engine runs very smoothly with no appreciable compression loss in any cylinder. No serious oil leaks. Engine oil has been faithfully changed every 1000 miles using HD30 weight oil along with ZDDP additive to protect the camshaft and other high friction internal parts. Oil filter also has been regularly changed. Carburetor was rebuilt one year ago; engine tuned up last fall. The radiator was replaced with a brand new one last year, however the original radiator comes with the car ready to re-core and put back into place. The automatic transmission does not slip and shifts smoothly and perfectly every time. With these Automatic Drives, first and second gears are torque conversion; driving third gear is direct drive lockup so there is no slippage while driving! This car steadily gives 22 miles per gallon in normal use. Power brakes work perfectly and has plenty of strong stopping power. Suspension has good shocks and plenty of soft springing action for a smooth and competent handling ride. The electrical system is original. Everything works perfectly, including the original radio which I pulled out and rebuilt last year. Very sensitive and selective operation in all weather. The original clock works well and keeps accurate time. I had the opportunity to pick up an NOS speedometer for the car last fall and I am including it in the sale. It reads 1.5 miles on the odometer and still has the protective tape over the holes in back. As you may know, modern gasoline is more volatile than older gas and tends to vapor lock more readily too. To eliminate this problem I installed a switchable electric fuel pump inside the engine compartment. When switched on, the electric pump pressurizes the fuel leading up to the mechanical pump and beyond into the carburetor, thereby eliminating the possibility of vapor lock. The electric pump is independently switchable and is also interlocked thru the ignition system, so you have your choice, only use the electric pump when you need it, or leave it on all of the time. The pump automatically switches on when you turn on the ignition key and witches off when you turn off the ignition. Pump is discretely mounted in the lower engine compartment so as not to detract from the original appearance under the hood. PHYSICAL CONDITION: Overall very good. Car was repainted last year. The original color was green, it was repainted in a lovely maroon metallic, extremely close to an actual 1951 Studebaker color. The biggest issue with the repaint is that the door sills were not done at the time. Interior was redone many years ago, but it still looks very decent. You can re-upholster the seating but I wouldn’t. The cloth interior is still in very nice shape. Original headliner in place has a couple of small holes but not overtly detracting. Original optional carpeting in excellent condition. Front drivers and passenger windows have cracks all other glass is good. NOS hood ornament and NOS front fender spears. Rear taillight chrome rims are repainted and need to be replaced. Remainder of chrome is OK but could use a re-chroming. No significant rust and no rot at all. This car is very solid and dry. Also included is a set of front bumper guards in very good condition! TERMS OF SALE: Car is available for inspection by appointment by calling 908-230-3386. Located outside of Princeton NJ.
