It was the most completely equipped Lincoln ever in standard form. Almost everything one could imagine was provided as standard equipment. The list of options was short. Available in just two color schemes, Diamond Blue Moondust Metallic and this—Jubilee Gold Moondust Metallic. Each color scheme featured matching padded Landau half-vinyl roofs with color-keyed moldings and integral Coach Lamps. Matching vinyl-insert bodyside moldings, padded vinyl deck lid kickup, front and rear bumper rub strips and guards, vertical grille bars, cast aluminum wheels, stand up hood ornament, bodyside paint stripes, and vinyl-insert deck lid lock cover. Each opera window featured the words "Diamond Jubilee Edition" in gold-colored script, and within the dot over the letter "i" in the word "Diamond" appeared a simulated diamond chip. Inside, more luxuries...including individually-adjustable front bucket seats with a center console, which concealed two storage compartments, the one between the seats featuring a padded top and storage for a matching umbrella on the underside of the lid! Seats, side panels, headliner, and interior moldings were covered with luxury cloth used only on the Diamond Jubilee Edition cars. A unique Broadlace insert appeared on the seat back upholstery. A unique, stamped brushed metal applique(shown at left) was mounted to the instrument panel above the glove compartment, replacing the traditional simulated woodgrain panel used on other Marks. It would be used again on the 1979 Continental Mark V Collector's Series cars [link opens in new window]. The padded instrument panel featured ebony wood tone accents, which were also used on the console, door panels, and front seat backs. For the convenience of rear seat passengers, the front seat backs also included map pockets and assist straps, and reading lights were included in each roof sail panel, individually controlled by switches mounted on the rear quarter trim panels. A rear seat fold-down center arm rest was included as well, the only Mark V model to provide this item in 1978. As mentioned previously, the list of available optional equipment to check off on the order form was short. A Power Glass Moonroof, 40-Channel CB Radio, California Emissions System, High Altitude Emissions System, Class III Trailer Towing Package, Sure-Track Braking System, Traction-Lok Differential, Engine Block Heater, Lower Bodyside Protection, and a 7.5 Litre (460 CID) V-8 (except California delivery) were pretty much it. Lincoln said that the Diamond Jubilee Edition was the most luxurious Lincoln ever produced, and in many ways, that statement still stands true today. Even more than 30 years later, it's difficult to find a more comfortable car for a long road trip. The soft, smooth ride, the silence of the interior that prevents noises from the world outside from intruding upon the world inside, the comfortable, individually-adjustable front seats with 6-way power adjustment, and the many luxury features and touches that delight the senses still rank among the best of any luxury vehicle. Enjoy the ride, and don't forget to bring along a selection of Quad-8 tapes to listen to while underway—true 4-channel quadraphonic sound provided the best music around, as no other automotive stereo came close to it at the time! Disco, anyone?
