Vehicle Detail

RELISTED: For those who have been following the previous listing, you can see that the auction has changed to a reserve type listing...however, the reserve is lower than the previous auction starting bid. If you were on the fence before, now is the time to make your move!!! ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Up for auction is one 1970 Mercury Cougar Convertible with a 351W and an AOD transmission. In the short time I have owned the car I have done quite a bit to it, though not much cosmetically. I had a lot of plans for the car but with a baby on the way I don't have the time or the funds to continue working on it. The car comes with hundreds of receipts detailing work that has been done on it since the early 90's. The car was restored around 1994-95 and now the restoration is starting to show some wear. This was originally a Pennsylvania car so all of the fenders and floor pans have already been replaced. Since I have owned the car I have rebuilt the rear suspension, replaced all 4 tires, replaced the FMX transmission with an AOD, replaced the starter with a late-model mini-starter, tinted the windows, replaced the radiator, added a transmission cooler, and replaced a taillight socket with a NOS original because it was having grounding problems. I removed the entire front grill assembly and painted it all flat black, including the XR-7 center grill. Although this car has an XR-7 interior and grill, it is NOT originally an XR-7. YES - the flip up headlights work! YES - the sequential taillights work! What is wrong with the car? Well a lot of it is detailed in pictures below. It needs paint and body work for sure, but nothing major. It will need a new convertible top soon because the rear window fell out of the existing one and it is starting to wear. I planned to reupholster the interior, the back seat especially needs attention. A few months back I had a blowout on the front right and so that part of the car looks awful. The tire came apart and slapped the back of the fender back, tore the marker light out that was just behind the front bumper, and also slapped the top of the fender where the hood is and made a "reverse" dent on the top of the fender. It also destroyed the fender lip trim, so I went ahead and removed all 4 of the trim pieces and sold them. Mechanical issues are as follows: There are 2 solenoids that activate the starter right now, one on the fender and one on the starter. I was going to throw out the one on the fender after I relocated the battery to the trunk but that never happened. There are no speakers in the car. The heat won't work until the cable for the heater is repaired or reattached, I'm not sure which happened over the winter because I haven't checked that out yet. You have to push the shifter up pretty hard to get all the way into the "Park" position. This is due to a mechanical linkage clearance problem after installing the AOD. Once again, I did not get around to adjusting this. The convertible reinforcement plate that installs just behind the transmission needs to be reattached. I have this part. When the floor pans were replaced, they were welded in from the top instead of being flushed in. That is why you still see old rusty floor pans in the pictures below. I'm sure I will think of other things later that I will try to update. Please ask as many questions as you would like! The most important thing is that the car is a great driver, gets lots of attention everywhere it goes, and has never left me stranded. It gets pretty decent mileage with the OD transmission too, and the aluminum radiator with external tranny cooler keeps everything super cool. It's great piece of mind if you plan on driving in a hot climate. If you would like to ask more questions about the car please e-mail or call me, Wes, at (912) 663-1441. wes@hargray.com Text messages are ok too! Happy Bidding! VIDEO NOTE: As stated above, the car has 2 solenoid switches instead of 1 which is causing a voltage/current drop to the starter, this is why the battery seems weak or the starter sounds bad in the videos. This can easily be corrected by using the starter-mount solenoid only, which will simply require a longer battery cable to the starter.
