Vehicle Detail
I remember when I first purchased my M5, and all the research it took for me to finally decide on this model. You see the BMW M5 is a car that people don’t just stumble across in the same way people might do so when entering a dealership, looking to purchase a Toyota Camry, or a Nissan Altima. Both of these are excellent cars for what they're designed for, to take you from place to place safely and reliably. I was determined to find out if the M5 would give me that sense of safety, as well as putting a smile on my face each time I started that angry 5.0L V8 engine. The type of person who chooses an M5 over other four door sedans is someone who demands a hassle free driving experience and one who looks for that extra bit of enjoyment from life. Of course I scoured over the major car websites meticulously trying to find any reason NOT to go through with the purchase, and I came up empty handed. But then again, these guys receive the absolute newest specimen of whatever car they are testing, and what car reviewer would truly give poor marks to a 394HP monster with under 1,000mi on the odometer. Bimmers are known for so many positives, however there are several 3-series models that are known for having certain issues. So, back to my M5 research. Before I went through with the purchase, I wanted to hear what owners had to say who actually used the car for over a year and drove for thousands of miles, and when I finally found what they had to say, I was pleasantly surprised. All the reviews were quite positive, with the most common complaint being the awful cupholders, and yes, unfortunately this M5 has a broken one as well. I want you to know that I was never interested in track racing, so when I saw the excellent reliability reviews by people who claimed they took their M5's to the track, it was just another sign for me to purchase this car. Additionaly, during my ownership the car has remained entirely on the road, yet there are a few important details I need to point out. Reason for Sale: This car was my weekend driver. As of late, I haven't even been able to do that, partly due to winter and the other part due to a lack of time. I recently purchased my first home and this car is not a necessity. Handling: Despite carrying much more weight than a typical 3-series, this car has the qualities of a car that is much leaner,ie it does not act its weight. With lighter cars, wind or the typical air disturbance created when cars/trucks pass you at a high speed can bob the car around in the lane, forcing you to fight for control. This is a non issue with the M5, thanks in part to the weight (around 4000lb) and also due to the German engineers’ dislike of outside influences effecting the driving. The cornering capability of a car is obviously an important quality. Many people who experience BMWs claim that the cars feel as if they drive themselves. Highlights during my ownership: -Never been raced -Never been over revved -Always been garaged Performance: Even though I have never raced the car or pushed it anywhere near its limits, I have experienced some of the power that this car has to offer during highway driving. Every now and then if I needed to pass a car, I found out quickly that its not even necessary to downshift. With the slightest push of the gas pedal, the engine comes alive and the car pulls forward smoothly without hesitation. Yes, none of this might surprise any of you, because the 2001 M5 WAS the fastest sedan in world when it came out. Even today it is easily one of the top ten performers of 4-door sedans. Maybe it's not even the feeling of the power that this beast produces, what shocked me the most is how effortlessly everything was performed. Reliability: This is obviously an important topic for a sedan. M5s are not the sensitive creatures that are Lamborghinis or Ferraris. So it took me awhile to find accurate information that would give me a true glimpse of the solidity of the car. After a few hours browsing the net on websites such as edmunds.com I saw that almost all the owners of the 2001 M5s were still extremely pleased with their purchase, and definitely recommended the car and even more importantly, most said that they would purchase the car again if given an opportunity. In regards to my ownership I also have not had a single issue. The car fires up every time and I’m greeted with that wonderful low rumble of the engine idling. Maintenance: When I spoke with the previous owner about the car, I grilled him on how he maintained it. He admitted to changing the oil every 5,000mi or less and always using synthetic oil (5W-30). I was pleased with his answer. History: Very common problem involving the E39 BMW's is the partial failure of the LCD odometer display and this M5 is also affected. This makes the mileage and certain other basic information somewhat difficult to read on the center cluster. A performance air intake was installed which causes the check engline light to come on. The passenger side cup holder is broken (a VERY common problem). The 6-disc CD changer has disc reading issues. The car is approximately nine years old, so it does have various minor scratches and there is a small dent on the deck lid. Upgrades: The car is completely stock other than the air filters, headlights, rear lip and roof spoiler. I have never used rims other than the stock set, nor have I adjusted or changed the suspension in any way.
