Vehicle Detail

SELLING TO HIGHEST BIDDER WITH NO RESERVE! 1978 VW Volkswagon Type 2 Westfalia Campmobile Camper bus van. Lime green and white exterior. Green plaid and wood panel interior. All original camper equipment. Top pops up for standing room and bunk. Rear seat folds out into bed. Lots of storage space, including a clothes closet. Sink with plastic water tank. Built in ice chest. Exterior A/C electric connection. Interior circuit breaker and one A/C outlet. Removable table w/extention leaf. Stereo has been replaced with extra speaker box that is removable. Mechanical - I am told that the engine is not original and may be a Porsche motor. Motor ran fine when vehicle was placed in storage 5 years ago. The muffler rusted off and there is a replacement muffler included. I have not tried to start the engine without the muffler on it. Also I believe it needs new muffler mounts and what I think are called heat exchangers. There is a new engine compartment gasket included. I am not a mechanic and don't know much about the motor. My son drove this bus and we tried to do some work on it but lost interest. Brakes were replaced in 2004. The battery is dead and will have to be replaced. Tires and Wheels - We purchased this bus with Porsche wheels on it. Tires were replaced by us then and still look good, but bus has been parked inside for 5 years, so I can't guarentee their condition. Also included are two original VW wheels with poor studded snow tires on them. Body - I have several pictures of the condition of the body. Please contact me with a valid email address and I will send you the complete set of pictures. The bus was struck in the left rear while it was parked. The rear left panel needs to be replaced. The rear bumper brackets were damaged and one was ripped off. The right rear panel was pushed in by the bumper swinging around and we discovered that there is bondo there from a previous repair. The rear also has quite a bit of rust. The engine compartment has rust thru on the left and right sides, especially under the battery. The rear outside panel under the battery compartment has severe rust damage. The hinges for the engine compartment door rusted / broke off, but the door itself is still solid. There is rust bubbling under the paint on the right front door and along some window surfaces. I took pictures of all the spots so that you have a good idea of the damage. The floor panels are all solid. I'm not sure about the heat ducts that run under the bus from the engine to the front. They may be rusted out to, but I haven't inspected them closely. Overall, the most body work will be in the rear panels and I would rate the rest of the body in fair condition. Interior - All fabrics are original, so they either need cleaning or replacement. All the foam padding is original also. There is one tear in the driver's seat, otherwise most everything is intact. The ceiling lining over the front seats is missing. The floor carpets are stained but intact. There is some plastic molding that has warped from age and is loose. Some of the wood panel surfaces are chipped and damaged. Overall, the cabinetry is solid and restorable. This model did not come with a stove. I would rate the interior as fair to good. Camper top - The top shell is in good condition and the pop up frame works fine. The canvas around the top is original and torn in two places. It probably needs to be replaced. The bunk frame, cushions and fabric are all original too. Overall, this is a good restoration project and would make a great camper when it is done. All the original items are here to work off of and most of the replacement items such as body panels are readily available on the internet. If you are mechanically inclined, know how to do body work and have some decorating skills, this camper is for you! Please review all the pictures. Ebay only allows 24 pictures, but I have several more. Please contact me if you would like to see the complete set of pictures. You are welcome to come inspect the bus before bidding. Contact me with any questions before you bid. I am selling this vehicle "as is, where is", with no warrenty expressed or implied. Vehicle will have to be flatbedded as it cannot be driven without the exhaust system. Buyer is responsible for removing the vehicle within 30 days after auction closes. Vehicle is located in Glens Falls, NY, off Exit 18 of the Adirondack Northway (Interstate 87), approximately 45 miles north of Albany, NY. Non-refundable $100.00 deposit is due at close of auction via Paypal. Remainder of payment is due at pickup and payment in cash or bank check is required at that time. AGAIN, THIS IS A NO RESERVE AUCTION! THE CAMPER BUS SELLS TO THE HIGHEST BIDDER! Thank you for visiting my auction and Good Luck with your bids!On Apr-18-10 at 14:03:05 PDT, seller added the following information: Another ebayer has informed me that the engine is a correct original engine for this VW bus. The information I had that it was a Porsche engine is apparently incorrect, although he states it was also used in the Porsche 914, so that may be where the confusion from the original owner is. Hope this helps you bidders! On Apr-18-10 at 15:45:38 PDT, seller added the following information: I had a request for pictures of the underside of the bus. I shot a few and did some more inspecting under there, so if you'd like to see those pictures, please e-mail me. I will send these extra pictures out to all those that already requested pictures so that you won't have to ask again. As I stated, the floor pans all look solid. There is some surface rust and pitting on some other parts underneath. There is rust thru in the engine compartment. The motor is missing the heat exhangers that go back to the muffler. I guess my son removed them, but I don't know where they are now. I have the new muffler, but not the heat exchangers. I do have the covers that go under the heat exchangers. It looks to me like the heater ducts are rotted out by the engine, but not further forward of that. So basically it's the exhaust system that needs work and the connector tubes of the heat ducts. Keep asking those questions and I'll try to answer as best that I can! Thanks!
