My understanding is that I’m the fourth owner of this 1980 Vanagon Westfalia camper. About 12 years ago a local mechanic bought it from the original owner and brought it up to trip-worthy status for a family member who had it for a couple years. Shortly after he sold it, I acquired it with the intention of road trips and camping adventures with my family. Although it had a rebuilt engine, and running an air-cooled was rather cool, it’s temperamental nature and lack of power (unable to get it above 50mph in a headwind) lead to a 2.2L turbo Subaru engine swap (Small Car conversion kit) with the view towards more effortless driving and reliable road tripping. Since the conversion at about 100,000 miles, we have been on epic journeys around the continent, putting on around 25,000 glorious miles. Last summer, a transmission failure inspired a newly rebuilt transmission transplant from Rancho Performance Transaxles and a rebuild of the EJ22T engine. It is now ready for tens of thousands more miles of road-tripping bliss. So why am I selling it now? It has been my delightful hobby over the past 10 years and all along I never had in mind to sell it, but some major health issues have knocked the stuffing out of me and I am needing to recalibrate life.
