Vehicle Detail
You are bidding on a 1968 Chevrolet El Camino. This car is a great driver. It is not a trailer queen or a show car, so if you're looking for a good daily workhorse you're in the right place. The '68/'69 are arguably one of the most aggressively styled body of the entire run and personally my favorite. It rides great, and can handle a healthy workload when needed. I've used this as a daily driver for the past few years, and it's never let me down. It's equipped with power steering and power front disc brakes. Engine is a 350 small block, backed by a TH400 and open 10-bolt rear. The paint and body is strictly driver quality. It still holds a shine, but it has it's little nicks, dings, and scratches, but nobody ever really notices. I can drive and park it anywhere and not worry about it. The chrome is in exceptional shape except top tailgate molding has scrapes from use. Many fixes and improvements have been made during my ownership. The left floor pan was replaced, seam sealed, painted, and floors covered in Fatmat insulation. For safety, high quality 3-point belts were installed to the factory attachment points. Interior upgrades include a new dash bezel, reproduction console with horseshoe shifter, new carpet, new door panels, and a set of Scat Pro-Car reclining bucket seats. Take a look at the pictures and you'll find the interior is more than presentable, and looks better than most. A modern "retro" am-fm stereo was fitted so the dash bezel would remain uncut. You can see from the underside photo that it is equipped with front and rear anti-sway bars, and has no signs of rust. I have no idea what the actual chassis mileage is. Has it gone around at lease once? I'm sure it has. The TH400 shifts perfectly and the fluid is cherry red. Please take note that the engine has seen better days and is tired. Yes, it still runs, drives and pulls a load just fine. It takes a light foot on the throttle under 35 mph or it may pop back through the carb. Above 35 you can press it harder, but you can feel something isn't quite right. I haven't fully investigated the problem, but my best guess is that it has a burnt valve. I didn't get into it because even though it has strong oil pressure, I knew the best route is to just replace it. I met a guy that bought a 64 Nova that came with a built small block with 400 heads, roller rockers, and an aggressive cam, but was unhappy with the cam lope. The engine only had a few thousand miles on it, when he decided to replace what he had with a stockish 350 crate motor. After I bought his motor; I pulled the cam and replaced it with an RV cam, put a 1 piece felpro pan gasket on and bolted on a new water pump. This engine is included in the auction. All that's needed is to pull the old motor, transfer the intake, exhaust, distributor and ancillary stuff, and drop it back in. Once done, it will be ready to spin the odometer around again. Like all "mature" vehicles it has it's little idiosyncrasies. The fuel gauge always reads full - not sure if it's a ground, the tank unit, or the gauge. I use the odometer as a guide and never worried about it. Vent window regulators work, but are "sloppy." As you know these classics will always provide you something to tinker with on a Saturday afternoon. The bed has a Rhino-Liner installed and some great tie-down tracks mounted to the floor, so securing the engine in the bed for shipping will be easy. Again, if you are looking something you can actually use and enjoy, and are not looking for a mega-buck show car, take a close look at this one.
