Vehicle Detail
1966 MGB Full Restoration (By me) between 1991 and 2011. It took such a long time because of my health problems. I'm not a professional, but have restored several vehicles such as Lotus, Porsche, Mercedes and Jaguar in my 50 years of working on cars as a hobby. Since 2011, I have been tweaking things as I've been able to – It has been inside my shop during that time except for a few days spent in my driveway when I or my wife was driving it locally. It was driven out today by my wife who is not super knowledgeable about old British Cars, but she pulled the choke and turned the key - it started right up as if it had been driven yesterday. There's only a few problems I'm aware of; the right rear wheel seal weeps a small amount of rear axle fluid. I just couldn't spend the time on it needed to fix it. Also, the 2nd gear synchro is weak on downshifts. And the tach doesn't work. I actually spent a long time on the tach problem. I tried a couple of extra tachs, but I think they may have problems too. I have new wiring in place through-out the car and I tripled checked the wiring between the tach, coil and distr. I thought one of these tachs worked when I started removing everything but I just can't get any of them to work. Also, the Black crackle paint on the dash didn't last very long (see photo). It started flaking off even though I used all the suggested techniques for respraying the dash. I cleaned it and wiped it with Paint Prep, then sprayed it on a warm day in the sunshine. I have no idea what I did wrong. I also used the correct Crackle Paint from Moss Motors.Anyway, here it is, warts and all. I think I have included everything, but my memory is getting worse all the time. I haven't even seen it in a few months ;-) The following is also from memory but I feel pretty good about its accuracy. One of the biggest things in its favor is being rust free. In the past years I have been all over, inside and under this B and I don't think there's any rust. I did not open the rockers but they are solid with no surface problems and based on the rest of the car, I find no reason to think they are rusted. There are no drive train problems that I know of (except the weak 2nd gear synchro) - and the front suspension was restored when I went thru it. It will not be a concours candidate without a lot more work, but it will make a great daily driver for someone. I would feel comfortable driving it a long distance right off the bat. I really hate to let it go. But it's time. Mileage Shown is an estimate.
