1978 Honda Gold Wing GL1000Rebuilder / Parts BikeBurgundy Beauty!25,939 original miles!Engine needs rebuilding / or swap engines.Still runs and lot drives. Looking for a great classic Gold Wing project? Here you go! This beauty was my pride and joy for the last four years. It had performed flawlessly for those four years, but when I took it out of storage this spring, after cruising for 35 miles it bent a piston (or two) and it has a considerable knock now. It still would run and drive in a parking lot, but I would not recommend driving it home unless you live locally. Here's what I've done to it in the last few years: New Dunlop tires 3 years ago--about 1200 miles on them. (great shape). New plugs and points. New headlight. This was a Naked Wing when I bought it (see one pic). Added an original Vetter fairing, bags, and trunks. They are in solid shape with all the keys included! The Vetter equipment is not as nice as the motorcycle itself. (but it's not bad) I installed a brand new windshield 2 years ago. No scratches on it. The clutch cable is new from last summer. Fuel lines were replaced when I got it. The carburetor needs work. It does have 4 new carb kits installed in it, but the carb is leaking--not sure why. I'm pretty certain the engine needs rebuilding now. The last time I drove it on a long run the oil light came on and it started knocking pretty loudly. I pulled over and shut it down right away. Once I got it home I did and oil change. There were lots of metal shavings in the oil that came out. I suspect they are from the bad piston or ring or something. It does still run and drive, but the knock is loud and the carbs leak. It's killing me to sell this, but I've decided to move on with a newer Gold Wing. I have another '78 GL1000 for sale separately that I was going to use for an engine swap for this one. You could by both and make one heck of a sweet Wing! I found a classic Honda mechanic in Iowa that would perform the engine swap for under $700. Questions? Send them my way. Or call Ben at 507-867-1401. Have clean title. This would be a great classic Gold Wing to get back in shape!
