THESE 1975-76 ELDORADOS IN A FULLY & PROPERLY RESTORED STATE SELL IN THE MID $20K RANGE AS DO WELL PRESERVED SURVIVOR ELDORADO VEHICLES. BACKGROUND NARRATIVE ON THE 1970 TAKEN FROM OTHER SOURCES BELOW The front wheel drive Eldorado Coupe and Convertible for 1975 received extensive styling changes, even though both retained the same body that had been introduced four years earlier. A new grille design had a bold, vertical texture and was flanked by rectangular headlamp units. The switch to rectangular lighting was the biggest change since the industry adopted the dual headlight setup in 1958. Because of their more compact dimensions, the rectangular units allowed for a lower and wider frontal appearance, and gave stylists the ability to incorporate them into the overall design better. For years, stylists surrounded the round sealed beam units with rectangular bezels, or hid them behind headlight covers, in an attempt to make them blend better. The wrap around parking, turn signal, and cornering lights of the previous two years were replaced with rectangular parking and turn signal lights placed in the outer ends of the lower front bumper. The front side marker and cornering light assembly was now rectangular, and placed higher up on the front fender in front of the wheel opening. The 1975 Eldorado struck a very sporty appearance when viewed from the side. The rear fender skirts had disappeared, and for the first time since 1970 the rear wheel openings were wide open, giving the car a leaner, sleeker look. This meant the full-length body side belt molding was now shorter, and ran the length of the car only between the wheel openings. Coupe models got a restyled rear quarter window. It was still fixed, but now dipped down at the lower front edge to meet the rear fender line. The lower edge was angled to match the fender angle, and the glass area itself was larger, giving the driver a better view. Rear styling remained virtually identical to that of 1974, which was all new that year. The inside story for 1975 included new upholstery fabrics in three standard patterns for the Coupe models. Mosaic Check combined a daring check pattern cloth with color-coordinated leather in three different shades. Monticello Velour was a very ornate material that came in six colors. Metamora Plaid was offered in three colors, and is representative of Cadillac customer's fondness for plaid upholstery designs at the time. Optionally, a new softer, more supple Sierra Grain Leather was available on Coupe models, but was provided as standard equipment on the Convertible. Leather was available in 12 shades, including several new colors such as Light Blue, Dark Crimson, Rosewood, Dark Brown, and Medium Orange (shown above). A new shirred stitching technique gathered the material, giving it a comfortable, relaxed look. Many items that were optional in previous years became standard for 1975, and base prices reflected this change. Things such as an AM/FM signal-seeking stereo radio with automatic power antenna, power door locks, Automatic Climate Control (with a new Economy setting), tinted glass, white sidewall tires, and six-way power seat were normally specified by customers anyway, so ultimately it simplified the ordering process, and likely saved some money since all Eldorados built would now have these items. Steel-belted radial ply tires were now standard as well, in recognition of their lower rolling resistance, which reduced drag by up to 33 percent and coupled with a lower final drive ratio, improved fuel economy as a result. Cadillac was in a colorful mood in the mid-seventies, and that is reflected again in 1975 by some of the paint finishes offered. Rosewood Firemist was a soft metallic Lilac color that was inspired by a similar color from 1969. Mandarin Orange was a bright orange metallic that really demanded attention. Inverary Green was a silvery green shade that could seem both icy cool yet brilliantly reflective at the same time. All of these colors were included in matching vinyl roof and interior trims, and you could even specify an orange convertible top if desired! Cadillac introduced quite a few new options in 1975 as well. Among them were Electronic Fuel Injection, Air Cushion Restraint System (air bags), a glass dome Astroroof, reclining passenger seat back, illuminated entry system, Fuel Monitor System, and wide white sidewall tires, which featured a 1.6 inch width stripe, compared to the standard .75-inch whitewall. (See image at left for correct white stripe design.) Don't confuse the "new" wide whitewall stripe with those from earlier models. Some owners have mistakenly placed 1950's-style wide whitewall tires on these cars, which are incorrect and look out of place. Sales improved only slightly for the year, due mostly to the economic recession during the 1975 model year. It was the most severe recession since 1958 at that time, and even wealthy consumers were economizing wherever possible. The 1975 Eldorados are a good choice for classic car enthusiasts. The high energy ignition ensures easier, faster starting under all conditions, and Cadillac had made great strides in improving fuel economy during 1974-75. These Eldorados are surprisingly agile and easy to drive, especially considering their size. A few minutes behind the wheel will impress even those who normally couldn't see themselves collecting a large car. Driven carefully, respectable fuel economy can be achieved. Like all leisure activities, classic cars do cost money and aren't always the best use of one's time. But for the sheer enjoyment factor, nothing beats them. There's something about tinkering with an old car and returning a long inoperable component back to full function. Polishing that chrome trim that hasn't sparkled in decades. There are the many friendships afforded among old car enthusiasts, who all have a common bond and understand the complexities of maintaining an older car. And that's what it's all about, really. Strangers who approach to ask about your car. So often, it reminds them of a loved one who had one like it when it was brand new. As one of the world's most exciting cars, the 1975 Cadillac Eldorado today represents a time when bigger was better, choice was a mandatory option, and efficiency and luxury were just beginning to become shared interests. When you slide behind the wheel, gaze across the long expanse of hood past the wreath-and-crest hood ornament, settle comfortably into a seat that gives you all the leg room you could want and cradlesOn May-29-17 at 05:31:44 PDT, seller added the following information: THIS LISTING IS REVISED AND UPDATED TO CLARIFY THAT THE MODEL YEAR IS 1976 and NOT 1975 In accordance with the TRIM TAG on the firewall of the car and the VIN number this is an early production of the 1976 model year. the vehicle is production sequence No. 4409 out of 14,000 built for the 1976 model year. The digits resemble: 6L47S6Q100001 These digits decode as: Digit #1 = GM Division (6 designates Cadillac) Digit #2 = Series (L - Eldorado) Digits #3-4 = Body Style (47 - 2-Door Hardtop Coupe; 67 - 2-Door Convertible) Digit #5 = Engine (S - 500 V-8) Digit #6 = Year (6 -1976) Digit #7 = Assembly Plant (Q - Detroit, MI; E - Linden, NJ) Digits #8-13 = Unit Production Number Complete vehicle identification is determined by the Body Number Plate, which is located under the hood on the cowl, near the top. Image: GM Body Number Plate ST = Style (76 - Model Year; 6 - Cadillac Division; EL - Eldorado Series; 47 - 2-Door Coupe Body Style or 67 - 2-Door Convertible) BDY = Body (Q - Detroit, Michigan Assembly Plant; 100001 - Production Sequence) TR = Trim (19C - Black Mansion Knit Cloth) PNT = Paint (13 - Georgian Silver; P - Silver Metallic Vinyl Roof) L## = Modular Seat Code (Letter followed by two numbers, depending on seating configuration) The Last of the Breed - 1976 Cadillac Fleetwood Eldorado Convertible Sales of the 1976 Cadillac Eldorado were up 110 percent over 1975, due to increased interest in the last convertibles. Cadillac built 35,184 Coupe models for 1976, which was 98.3 percent of a year earlier. But 1976 production of 14,000 Convertibles was an increase of 156 percent over the previous year! Cadillac knew the announcement of the final convertible models would generate additional attention and increased orders, and some report that had it been able to obtain additional convertible top components, Cadillac would have built and sold even more convertibles for 1976. Once Cadillac had served notice that the convertible would not be repeated for 1977, the factory was hit with orders for the actual last convertible. Cadillac had already determined that the actual last car would be retained for its own historical collection, so 200 identical "last" convertibles were built to satisfy demand. All were identical to the actual last car, and had body numbers 013801-013999. Body number 014000 was the actual last convertible. They are detailed on our 1976 Cadillac Eldorado Bicentennial Convertible page. The 1976 convertibles were considered instant collector's items, and speculators soon drove prices sky high. Once factory production ended and dealer supply was depleted, prices jumped to two or three times the manufacturer's suggested retail price of $11,049. Quite a few cars were purchased and put into storage immediately. One dealer reported a customer had their new car loaded onto a flatbed right there on the car lot, and was carefully covered to be transported to a heated, air conditioned, and humidity-controlled garage for long-term storage. More than just a few people did this, so low mileage original examples were quite plentiful, which brought prices down dramatically after just a few years. For rarity, the 1975 model convertibles are more scarce, but they don't have that "final convertible" mystique surrounding them. There were very few exterior or interior changes made between 1975 and 1976. The easiest way to identify the specific year would be to check the taillights. The '75 cars featured a Cadillac crest in the center of each light, and the '76 models are unadorned. Also, the Cadillac script on the front of the hood was incorporated into the grille header in 1975, and was a separate part for 1976, mounted above the grille header on the painted portion of the hood. The 1976 wheel covers included black paint detailing, but wheel covers are easily changed, and as such are not the best way to identify a particular model year. It should be noted that all 1976 Eldorados came equipped with the black detail on the wheel covers, except for the final 200 Convertibles built, which had white detailing, and the late year Custom Biarritz cars, which featured color-coordinated wheel covers to match one of the five colors available for that option. Since the two model years are so similar in appearance and appointments, about the only thing substantial that sets them apart is the inclusion of four wheel disc brakes for 1976. Styling was considerably updated for 1977, with new front and rear end designs. For personal luxury, the Eldorado Coupe was just the thing. If you wanted personal luxury with the exhilaration of top down driving, you had one last chance to buy an Eldorado Convertible. If you required family-sized luxury, Cadillac offered the Calais Coupe and Sedan, and the Coupe deVille and Sedan deVille. For executives, the Fleetwood Brougham or one of the big Seventy-Fives, either the Limousine or Nine-Passenger Sedan was available to meet your requirements. While the last Eldorado Convertible may have attracted the most attention, several other Cadillac models would appear for the last time in 1976. The 12-year old Calais series, which consisted of just two models, the Calais Coupe and Calais Sedan, would be dropped after 1976. Most of Cadillac's customers didn't mind the slight price increase to step up to the more luxurious deVille series, and a total of just 6,200 Calais series cars were built for the year. The full-sized Limousine and Nine-Passenger Sedan would be down sized for 1977, along with all of the other standard Cadillac models, which would leave only the Eldorado in its traditional size. So for anyone seeking the traditional sized luxury afforded by the 151.5-inch wheelbase Seventy-Fives, this would be their final opportunity to do so. And along with the considerable exterior dimensions would go the distinguished Seventy-Five series designation. And finally, the 500 cubic inch, 8.2 Litre V-8 engine introduced in 1970 for the Eldorado, which had been the sole power source for Cadillacs since 1975 (except for the 1976 Seville, introduced in April 1975), would be retired after 1976. This engine would remain the largest engine ever to power a production Cadillac, but efficiency would be the focus going forward, and there was no room for large displacement, thirsty power plants. Things were changing at Cadillac, as well as in the rest of the U.S. auto industry. The Eldorado would hold out for two more years, but it too was slated for the biggest change in its history come 1979. An Eldorado Biarritz Convertible would join the line in 1984, and would last for just two years, as the Eldorado was due for yet another down sizing for 1986. That move would not be a good one for the Eldorado, nor for the Cadillac Division, which was in jeopardy of losing its leadership position in the American luxury car market. Things to look for when purchasing a 1976 Eldorado are similar to earlier models. Corrosion around vinyl top moldings is a big concern, as are bubbles or bumps under the material. Look at the lower extremities of doors and front fenders for signs of decay, as well as the front edge of hoods and the rear edge of deck lids. Constant velocity joint boots can deteriorate and damage the joints themselves, so check to make sure the boots are in good condition. Eldorados with fuel injection should have the injector seals replaced for peace of mind, as they are prone to deterioration due to time, and are a fire hazard. Timing chains can also create problems, and On May-31-17 at 15:18:46 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATE INFORMATION 5-31-2017 This eBay listing is being updated again to clarify the BILL-OF-SALE vs. The delivery of TITLE to the buyer. This car is registered in the STATE OF FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES, within the FL-DMV database this vehicle is identified as having a REGULAR TITLE that is FREE & CLEAR and UNENCUMBERED. The eBay listing clearly states that this transaction will be via a "BILL OF SALE". However, having said that,.. the FLORIDA TITLE "PAPER TITLE" IS ABSOLUTELY AVAILABLE for an additional $85.75,.. this is the actual charge by the STATE OF FLORIDA DEPARTMENT OF MOTOR VEHICLES to print the OFFICAL REGULAR TITLE on paper. Therefore, at the buyer's choice for the cost of $85.75 additional a printed paper title can be delivered to the new Buyer. In summary - whoever wants a PAPER TITLE and is willing to pay the $85.75 cost for the printing of the title,.. can certainly have it for the costs as incurred at the local DMV, I will not charge the new buyer the 4 hours I will spend of my time to drive to and wait in line at the DMV to get the paper title. I can tell you with 100% absurdity that the car has clean and clear and unencumbered official State of Florida title No.13042833 this is a 1976 Authentic 6EL67 Fleetwood Eldorado Convertible VIN 6L67S6Q145346 Title No.13042833 TRIM 532 - Light Ivory Gold - PAINT 52 - Phoenician Ivory+ (2868) with 72732 Original Miles on the Odometer.
