Vehicle Detail

1972 Chevelle SS convertible, family owned, nearly original. 350 CI, automatic. Motor block was damaged and replaced several years ago, and the entire car is mechanically very sound. It does not smoke at all, and uses no oil. 202 heads were put on when the block was replaced, and I think the block was a 4-bolt main, but I can’t remember that for sure. Everything else under the hood is original. The rear transmission seal needs replaced, but it is a very slow leak…just enough to stain the floor a little during long storage. The exhaust system consists of the stock manifolds and drop-down tubing, and is muffled by a single glass-pack. There are no other exhaust pipes on it. If it sits for more than a few days, one needs to prime the carb with a little gas to get it to start. This vehicle was purchased new by my father, and was kept by my mother until recently. She sold it to my son, got it back, then sold it to my daughter, and I acquired it from her. It was always garage kept by my mother and son, and I’ve kept it in my garage for both the duration of my daughter’s ownership and my ownership. I’ve decided that with my approaching retirement and numerous home repair projects underway that I will likely never get it restored, and none in my family with the means to buy it have an interest, and so I am letting it go. The canvas on the top needs replaced, and a new canvas comes with the car. The front seats were reupholstered years ago, and could use it again, and there is some upholstery coming loose at the front, bottom of the door panels, and some upholstery damage in the rear windows areas. I have had it assessed by a professional body man and was told for a complete body restoration it should have both rear quarter-panels and the trunk pan replaced. Everything else is in good shape, including the doors and door seams. It does need new paint. It was repainted several years ago and was painted the original color then, which is the gold you see in the pictures. It has the original 8-track/AM radio, but I don’t know if it works. I have no 8-track cassettes. The radio did work the last time that I used it, and it has very poor audio quality, but probably about the same as when it was new. The original rear speakers are removed, but I have them. I once had planned to replace them with better quality speakers, but never did. It has the gauge package as seen in the photo, and they all work, except sometimes the temp gauge starts bouncing erratically. My daughter purchased a new canvas for the top, which was never installed, and I’ve purchased and installed new hydraulic cylinders for the top, rear air shocks, and new tires. The tires probably have less than a hundred miles on them. This vehicle needs only a little tlc to be returned to its original glory. I also have new ball joints, fuel pump, and a convertible top switch with wiring harness, which all go with the car. The switch is broken, and I doubt if I’ll have time to replace it. I recommend that you view this car before bidding. I will add any photos that are requested. I believe that I have covered all issues, but it is 43 years old. I have made photos of every flaw that I am aware of, and I didn’t clean it or doctor anything up. I drove it out of the garage and took pictures of it as-is. The carpet is actually in very good shape, and so I’m sure it has been replaced, but is in dire need of a vacuum job. Pick-up and/or shipping is the responsibility of the buyer. It drives well, and I myself would trust it for long trips, but there again the age must be considered. On Dec-23-15 at 08:51:02 PST, seller added the following information: I had a question about the condition underneath, and I just took a couple of pictures of the only rust I could find. These pictures show a slight amount of rust on the seams of the front floor pans. The rust has caused the undercoating to peel off at the seam, but appears to me to be surface only, and is definitely not through. I am not a body professional, but I could see no other signs of rust anywhere. I will only be able to add one photo, and will add the one showing the worst, which is the driver side. (24 photo limit) I can provide specific photos to any subsequent inquiries, and if the current winning bid owner requests, then I will take it somewhere that has a lift and get better photos. I would also like to offer delivery to central Indiana at the end of January (weather permitting) for only the cost of a trailer rental. I am going there anyway to visit family. On Dec-24-15 at 08:53:30 PST, seller added the following information: While scrounging around to find the new fuel pump for this car, I came across a new seat belt that I purchased, and that reminded me that the driver's buckle is broken. The new seat belt goes with the car, of course. At an interested bidder's request, I've determined it is a 12-bolt rear end. I have the trim tag info if anyone wants it, and I also have photos available of the transmission pan. I'm in the process of rounding up old photos. On Dec-26-15 at 10:55:02 PST, seller added the following information: I found a shop open today that allowed me to drive over their pit and get bottom pictures, which are available upon request. The only observable rust was the front floor pan seams, the trunk pan, and the rear quarter panels.I also observed the oil pan, tranny pan, and bottom of car were wet from oil from leakage. I then checked the oil and found it a little over a quart low. I obviously need to retract my original description saying that it used no oil. During my ownership, which has been a couple of years, I never drove it enough to even realize it leaked any oil. Based on what I observed, I believe it may be from the oil pan gasket, and I've already mentioned some leakage from the transmission rear seal. The motor does run really strong and does not smoke at all, not even when first started. It was last rebuilt in the early 80s, and the motor block and heads were replaced then.On Dec-28-15 at 05:50:23 PST, seller added the following information: I have agreed to accept a money order or cashier's check for this transaction. I want to clarify that any such payment will need to clear my bank before I release the car and title. If you want the car more quickly, I accept cash, and will also accept a wire money transfer into my bank.
