Vehicle Detail

1966 Chevelle Malibu Big block 454 trimmed out as a 396. I bought this car back in 1989 from the original owner in Huntington Beach California. Car had been stored from 1974, until I bought it, and had it shipped to Chicago. Car was originally a 283, but he had a 396 put in it shortly after buying it new. He told me he spun a bearing on the 396 in 1970, and had the 396 block replaced with a 454, using all of the 396 brackets and trim. Transmission and brakes were also upgraded at this time Car was fully restored back in 1990-1991, and was a 96 point car at the Chevelle Showdown in Schaumburg, Il back in 1992. I never drove it much, and only put 526 miles on it in the last 23 years. Car has been in storage for the last 6 years, with a family and young kids now, so its time to let it go to someone who can appreciate it, and put it back on the road again. Car was recently started up after being dormant for the last 5 years, and backed out of the garage under its own power. I changed the oil, put fresh gas and a new battery in it, and it fired up fairly readily, though is running a bit rough as is to be expected. Car will need a going over before driving it, but it needs absolutely nothing major, and will be a quick winter project to get it in shape for next spring. Some of the features: Body: Original California car. Completely rust free, and never damaged. Car was repainted in its original regal red laquer back in 1991. I had a local restoration shop do it over several months, and they layed down multiple coats, and hand blocked it. Body it perfectly straight with absolutely zero ripples. No clearcoat was applied at any time. All Chrome and trim is original. Trunk is in original condition with a new mat installed in1991 A full size Mickey Thompsom spare on a 1970 z 28 wheel is in the trunk, with original jack. Headlamps are original T-3, even windshield wipers are original as car was never driven in the rain Wheels: 1970 Z-28 wheels as installed by the original owner, in 1970 Mickey Thompson G60-15's were put on in1992 Chassis 12 bolt 4:10 posi rear end, upgraded in 1970. Rear drum brakes are 11" Front discs are off of a 1970 Monte Carlo, as installed by the original owner in 1970. Brakes are non power, dual circuit Transmission: Turbo 400 automatic with Switch pitch dual range torque convertor This was normally a buick option, the original owner put in in 1970, when the trans was upgraded. There is a small switch on the shifter, allowing the torque converter to be switched from low stall to high stall. This is a very unique and sought after feature. Aftermarket kits sold in the 80's to convert turbo 400's to this feature. Electric kickdown Interior: Black Bucket seats with console. Interior is all original, with the exception of the drivers door panel, which was replaced with a NOS one. Carpet is original, with a few slight frays here and there. Drivers seat has a small tear, which I hid with the seatbelt when showing it. A pioneer AM/FM cassette is in the glove compartment in a custom enclosure. The original am radio is in the dash. Steering wheel is from a 1970 corvette, as installed by the original owner Engine 1970 454 block dressed to appear as a 396-360HP. Engine compartment and front frame from firewall forward, were restored in 1990-1991, Engine was rebuilt by Van Senus, of Highland, In in 1990, with all new bearings rings and seals. I Unfortunately do not remember the specs of the cam, but it if radical, yet very streetable. Car idles on premium fuel, just fine once its warmed up. Carb is era correct Holley. Car has 1966 correct power steering pump and reservoir. Car has Factory Air (always did) With correct 1966 brackets and pulleys installed on the big block, when it was put in in the fall of 1966. There is no refrigerant in the A/C system, and the clutch on the compressor has been disconnected. It just free wheels. Conditon of the A/C system looks good, however, I have never had it charged, and am unaware of what it would take to make operational again. Trans cooler in original radiator. Please contact me with any questions, or for further details. I have loved this car for many years, but it's time to let it go. It wont take much to get it perfect again. It will need a good going over of all mechanical systems, and I wouldn't recommend driving it until everything is checked over. Car is being sold as-is, for pickup by a carrier of your choice in the south suburbs of Chicago, Il, near the interchange of I-80, I-94, and I-294. Exhaust: Era correct hooker headers. Mufflers are Corvair Monza Spyder mufflers, and give it a really nice rumble FINALLY WAS ABLE TO FIX THE PHOTOS. SORRY FOR THE CONFUSION. IT KEPT FREEZING UP EVERYTIME I TRIED TO RELOAD THEM. PLEASE CONTACT ME WITH ANY QUESTIONS, OR FOR FURTHUR DETAILS. Car is a Z vin tag Built at Fremont California June 1966. Have original California black and gold plates, last renewed in 1975. Car was in storage in California from 1974-1989. High quality car cover included. Odometer was showing 61, 426 when I bought in in 1989. I only put 526 miles on it since 1991, mainly to local car shows Trim tag code is 765 RR Car was running flawlessly when put away 5 years ago Distributor contains a Mallory Electronic ignition module, within correct GM script distributor cap Positive battery cable will need to be replaced Was rubbing on the AC compressor pulley and made a cut in the insulation. Rear window may have ben replaced at some point by the original owner. Lots of questions about the interior: Interior is all original. The only thing I know was replaced was the drivers door panel. Carpet is original and is frayed and frazzled in a few spots. I removed it when I bought the car, had it shampooed, and put it back in. Condition of floor pan is perfect. no rust. Dash was taken apart for a good cleaning and minor cosmetic restoration, but all components are original, including the dash pad. Getting tons of questions. trying to address them here. Please forward any specific questions. I added the tach in 1992. No holes were drilled to mount it. There was an existing hole it is hanging from. Car spent the last 5 years up on jackstands Tires are in great condition. I put it back on the ground this past summer in anticipation of getting it running again.
