Vehicle Detail

This is it! The last year of the last generation of air-cooled Porsches! With one look at the 993, it is obvious that the continual refinements in the 993 generation of the iconic 911 is seen by some hardcore Porsche purists as the last truly great model in its long lineage, despite the fact that in terms of performance comfort and safety surpassed previous 911 generations while remaining quintessentially Porsche. Launched at the end of 1993, it was the third all-new 911 in the history of the legendary manufacturer. The Carrera S has been called "The Turbo Porsche without the Turbochargers" - a nod to the wide and low stance that a truly road-hugging superb handling sports car should have. This car is finished in the stunning and rare Ocean Blue Metallic, which shows a brilliant shine and shifts from bright to deep blue depending on the brightness of the lighting around the car. Offsetting this superb paint hue is the very distinguished Light Cashmere full leather interior with classic Teutonic black accents. With an unmistakable profile and front appearance drawn from Porsche's heritage, the 993 brought an air of modern design to the German car maker, especially when seen from the rear. Featuring wider wheel arches on the wide body S models as seen here, but with a much more subdued and more aerodynamic overall look, the model was still very much part of the classic 911 lineage. A look under the skin is where we find the most advances over previous generations, with the new model featuring a revised flat-six engine lineup, new computer controls for fuel, intake, and timing management, and an entirely new suspension that worked to reduce much of the infamous snap oversteer tendencies of its predecessors.Over five years of production, Porsche continually upgraded the 993 in many ways. The 993 family featured three body styles, rear wheel drive and all wheel drive, and at least six official engine variatons. The upgraded and up-rated S model, seen here in Coupe body style, is equipped with an evolution of the 3.6-liter, flat 6 cylinder (boxer) engine serving up 285 horsepower and 250 lbs/ft of torque from the Porsche VarioRam induction system which was introduced in 1995, and perfected by 1997. Instantly recognizable as a Porsche 911, the 993 does feature some distinctive design details that formed quite and impression on purists, enthusiasts, and Porsche newcomers when it was introduced, remaining an iconic car in the memories of those who lived in the 1990s. Without sacrificing any of the 911 identity, this model featured an all-new body that was much sleeker and had better aerodynamic properties than the somewhat utilitarian looking 964 generation, even though the doors and upper body were nearly identical between the two models. Up front, the headlights were much more swept, less pronounced and more smoothly integrated into the body, a feature also shared by the new bumpers, in addition to introducing High Intensity Discharge lighting to this premium sports car.The side view was nearly identical with the 964, with the obvious change in more aerodynamic features including the mirrors - finally standard on both sides and much flatter overall profile. At the rear rear is where things changed more significantly, with a much wider, rounder, and more integrated bumper and the faired-in taillights sitting quite a bit higher than on the previous generation. The rear lid of this car has a standard retractable spoiler with integrated cooling vents, which raises automatically at speed or with the simple press of an interior switch.Features of the refined 3.6 liter VarioRam engine included all-new engine controls and a true dual exhaust system with two catalytic converters instead of only one as on previous models. For the first time ever, the 993 came with a six-speed manual transmission as standard, keeping with the racing proven sports car intent of the Porsche 911. The engine in the 1997 Carrera 993 models offered 285 horsepower and 252 pound-feet of torque, offering outstanding performance compared to anything else on the road in its day. With the 993 model featuring the last-ever air-cooled street engine that Porsche ever built, this final-year 1997 993 can be seen as the definitive link between the old and the new.
