Vehicle Detail
Exactly one year ago, my El Camino search concluded when I found this original SS396 on eBay and bought it. This story is chronicled at http://blythbros.com/embracing-american-muscle-mullet-edition-68-el-camino-ss-396-l78/.Now, with priorities having shifted, I must part with this magnificent beast. Here are some of this Elky's highlights:Original L78 375 HP solid-lifter car, with a replacement, correct, rebuilt L78 4-bolt engine. M22 close-ratio (Rock Crusher) 4-speed manual transmission. 3.73 Posi-traction rear differential. Power steering; power brakes (disc front / drum rear). Frame-off restoration in 2000, documented with pictures and receipts. Car was placed in collection after restoration, then driven for maintenance and show purposes only - approximately 1,000 miles between 2000 and mid-2014. Since my purchase last year, the car has been driven an additional 1,000 miles - primarily two long trips (Illinois to Michigan; Michigan to Pennsylvania). Original mileage not known; odometer shows 2,094 miles, reflecting total miles driven in the 15 years since the restoration. Functional upgrades performed during restoration: Air conditioning installed using factory components (a/c was not an option with the L78 engine). Fuel lines, hydraulic components, and various connections replaced with upgraded items. High-performance upgrades to engine including intake manifold, pulleys, rocker arms, headers, etc. Exterior modifications include rear-exit exhaust, non-stock wheel / tire size, and 1969 grille which is more attractive than 1968 version (which I have). Front fenders also appear to be 1969 versions. Interior has full factory gauges, including rotary drum tach that unfortunately works intermittently. Primary upgrades are additional gauges, Hurst shifter, and factory A/C controls (A/C blows cold). Car has been very reliable since local Chevy specialist went over everything (I have receipts). PA inspected. Condition is striking, including paint, chrome, interior, and surprisingly beautiful undercarriage. Still, it's not show-worthy in a numbers-matching sense. Acceleration is forceful in any gear. Engine sound is special, with the solid lifters working with the headers & straight pipes in an amazing concert at any throttle position. Ideal existence is as a weekend cruise vehicle. To me, the bed is too nice for the home center loads that I had originally intended but never did.Car is garaged in York, Pennsylvania, and is available for viewing or test drives.
