Vehicle Detail

An Original Template Design 1968 AMX Item Description 390 Engine, 4 speed transmission, posi-trac rear end, Radio delete, Factory side exhaust, and Rally stripes. The AMX chassis was one full shorter than that of its Javelin stablemate and the rear seat was eliminated altogether, creating a true two seater. With a curb weight of only some 3,100 pounds, the AMX offered a wide range available power plants including 290, 343 and 390 cubic-inch V8 engines. When equipped with top-of-the-line 390 engine such as this the AMX boasted a stouts power to weight ratio of 9.8 lbs/bhp. Standard AMX features including reclining bucket seats, carpeting, wood grain interior trimmings, E70-14 Goodyear Polygalas tires, a four speed manual transmission, and heavy-duty underpinnings. Derived from the sporty new for 1968 Javelin ponycar and featuring a shortened wheelbase, American Motors AMX (American Motors Experimental) coupe debuted on February 24, 1968 as a mid-year model. Designed by industry legend Richard ‘’Dick” Teague, the AMX remains famous as the first steel bodied, two seat American production car since the 1957 Ford Thunderbird. To promote the AMX, American Motors enlisted Craig Breedlove, the famed racing driver and Bonneville Land Speed Record legend to push the new car to the limit and prove its capabilities. In February 1968, he set an amazing 106 world speed records with an AMX. In celebration, AMC produced a limited run of about 50 in special red, white, and blue “Craig Breedlove” edition AMXs. That year, AMC contracted with Ron Kaplan and Jim Jeffords to prepare and campaign two Javelins in the SCCA’s Trans-Am series, with the AMC effort gaining fame as the only factory entered team to finish every race entered that year. Drivers included George Follmer, Peter Revson, and Lothar Motschenbacher. Growing confidence and success marked AMC’s Trans-Am effort for 1969 and then in 1970, AMC scored a coup by signing Roger Penske and Mark Donohue, the reigning 1969 champions, who soon guided AMC to back to back championships for 1971 and 1972. Clutch pedal engages close to the end of the pedal, paint chipped at the upper edge of the truck, small blemish on the right side front fender, small scratch in hood front left side, fuel gauge doesn't appear to be accurate and the door locks don't seem to be working correctly with the keys. Only 6,725 exaples of AMX were built for the inaugural 1968 model year and this AMX features fresh paint with white rally stripes. It was delivered with a Hurst shifter and comes with headers and factory side exhaust with brand new mufflers, plus nearly-new Goodyear tires. Of the 6,725 made only 527 were made with Radio delete and with the option on this car, making this AMX one of the RAREST AMX’s ever produced.
