Vehicle Detail
Hello all, This car is fairly easy to describe - if you are looking for a VERY GOOD LOOKING, RELIABLE and EASY TO DRIVE MG-B, well,,,,,,,,,,, this just may be the one for you!!!! PAINT: The paint is very, very, very good. It was painted about three years ago and is a great color, is bright and is in very, very, good condition - no real issues here (while noting I do drive the car, so the paint is not that of a trailer queen - but trust me, it is in REALLY GOOD condition! CHROME: No real issues here. Not sure if the chrome was ever redone, or if it is totally original, but no real issues - Again, Very, Very, good condition. WHEELS and TIRES: This is going to start sound monotonous, but also Very, Very good condition! Tires look like they could have been replaced when the paint was done about 3 years ago, and don't have many miles on them at all. TOP: I'm in love with the top! The tan color shows REALLY WELL with the red paint. The top has a sort of "pebbled" look to it and looks like a very expensive top. (OH yes, the plastic rear window is in excellent condition too). INTERIOR: Also a tannish/brown color. The seats look exactly like I like to see the seats in an English car look - a bit of use that makes it quite pleasing to the eye. Take a look at the pictures and you will see what I mean. (The only interior "issue" I can find is that the driver's side carpet needs a good cleaning). The trunk carpet, in the picture, looks dirty but that is just shadows - the carpet is fine. ENGINE/TRANSMISSION: It seems like I may have saved the best for last! Someone (not sure who, but my mechanic swears this was a professional installation) installed a Mazda engine and automatic transmission out of a Mazda Miata! (The first thing a friend of mine said when I got this car was "no more oil drips" - ha, ha). I don't know about that, but it does make the car a lot more reliable and a lot easier to drive. UNDERSIDE: Have included some pictures - nice clean underside. MAINTENANCE: Was recently tuned up, oil change, etc., ROAD TEST: Since I wasn't the primary driver, I decided to take it for a long ride to check things out more closely (by the way, it is 25 DEGREES here - no snow like Buffalo, but BOY IS IT COLD - does it ever get to 25 degrees in England where this car was made?),,,,,,,, Anyway, the car fired right up (gotta love fuel injection - if this had the original engine I'd still be out there trying to start it). Since it was so cold the idle was high but it lowered down to a nice 1100rpm once it was warm, and the idle was really smooth (I imagine that is because of the fuel injection vice with carbs where the idle can be a bit bouncy? I expected more trouble with the cold 4 speed automatic tranny, but it was fine. I did notice the oil pressure gauge is stuck, or sticky. When I got in the car it was at 70lbs, and after a while it bounced up and stuck at the top of the gauge. No idea what that is all about! I mentioned in one of my replies to a bidder that we should all assume the tach and the speedo may very well be off a bit because of the engine conversion - at 50mph the tach was reading around 3500rpm. I've had old sports cars all my life (I'm now 70), and can tell you that at speed the rpms at this car are not high at all (no doubt due to the MG-B rear end), The steering on the car is nice and tight - really good, and driving down the road the car sits nice and soli.d The tranny kicks down smoothly. ISSUES: Not really much to talk about - I already mentioned the driver's side carpet. The oil pressure gauge seems stuck. The tach and speedo may be off a bit due to the engine change. The only other thing that I think is worth mentioning is shows in two of the pictures - the ones that show a small fender area. I don't know if it bad prep when the car was painted, or what, but there is a little bubbling along the passenger's rear fender top. Not bad, but it is there. (I have included pictures of the underside of the door, rocker area, and underside, and you will see that this is just not a rusty car - just a couple isolated issues). So, don't worry about any serious rust issues,,,,,,,,,,,,, SELLING THE CAR: Why am I selling the car. I bought it for a lady friend of mine, who just doesn't want to drive anything this small!!! As for me, I'm just about to turn 70 years old, and getting in and out of these smaller cars just isn't as much fun as it use to be. So, the small ones are going, and the larger ones are staying (I also have a 1960 Alfa spider I am thinking of selling). Someone asked if this car drives like a Miata - well, I've never driven a Miata, but my answer to that question would be NO - it drives like a 45 year old MG-B that has had work done to it, not like a 10+ year old car at all. Like the maintained, yet 45 year old car, that it is. I guess that is it - if you have any questions, please email.
