Vehicle Detail
These are great cars that can run for a million miles or more. All service on this car has been completed by a Certified VW Mechanic. Timing belt was replaced at around 110k miles. The Balance Shaft Gear Kit was completed at around 130k miles at a cost of $3k and I have the receipts. Turbo was replaced with a factory new unit also at around 130k miles, I also have the receipt. The camshaft was inspected for excessive wear at about 150k and none was found because we have always used the VW Certified Oil which prevents that issue. The third and final problem these cars have is with a bad seal internally in the Torque Converter. If replaced early, the transmission is not damaged and will go the life of the car. If not, the transmission will loose fluid and will be damaged requiring rebuild or replacement. The Torque Converter in this car is bad and will require replacement, that we know. When the Converter seal gave out, the car was not driven and was towed to a transmission shop who is in the business of selling transmission rebuilds who said it needs rebuilt. Upon research, (Thank You TDI Club), I found that most of the time the transmission does not need rebuilt or replaced, just the torque converter. VW knows about the problem and issued a service bulletin but since most of them were out of warranty, VW did nothing about the problem. http://www.myturbodiesel.com/images/pdf/passat-torque-converter.pdf Bad news is the transmission has to be removed to replace either one and that's out of my league and with my wife in a rental car, it was time to replace it. We bought a new Jetta TDI. This car is barely broke in as TDI's go and all the major concerns have already been resolved, just leaves the Torque Converter problem. The TDI guys discuss it here http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=305697 read it yourself and make your own decision. Car will need to be towed because of the problem but you can start it and hear it run but I would not suggest trying to drive it until the converter is replaced. The engine alone is worth $3500 here on Ebay, buy the engine and get the rest of the car for free!! Good Luck and Happy Bidding!!!
