Vehicle Detail

First of all, I have chosen the “Make an Offer” format over a pure auction because I have found this format leads to more interaction with realistic prospective purchasers. Since the purchaser of this car will be a Volvo enthusiast, I look forward to that interaction. I am the third owner of this wonderful 1966 Volvo 122S, Vin# 123806. I purchased it locally (Montana) for my granddaughter to drive to high school but soon realized this is just too nice a car to be a “first car”. So I’ve found her a later model steel brick Volvo, and this lovely little coupe is up for sale. The car is in excellent, unrestored condition, with 117,241 miles. The interior is original and near-perfect, with no tears and only a couple of worn spots on the piping, (detailed in the additional photos linked below.) The dashboard cover is original and there are NO cracks. The headliner is perfect with no tears. The car has been resprayed in original color, but there are a few imperfections to the paint such as lack of care in masking. This situation could be significantly improved with some effort and a little solvent, no cost involved. The grilles are protected by a fine screen, that’s why they look green. Behind the screen, the grilles appear perfect. This car has never been hit, the bodywork is factory straight and perfect. There is no rust anywhere that I have been able to detect. A very rare feature is what I believe to be original dealer-installed FrigiKing Magna-Temp air conditioning which WORKS. The unit has been converted to R134 refrigerant, and has just been serviced, with new compressor clutch and idler bearings and all new belts. This air conditioner blows cold enough to freeze beef. The car has also been converted to an alternator, in replacement of the stock generator. This car has had two owners prior to me, both of whom can be contacted to gather history of the car, which was delivered to the first owner, in Colorado, on October 26, 1965 with a $2853.60 sale price as evidenced by the original sale contract which is included. The original warranty service book is included, as is the original Owner’s Manual. The original FrigiKing AC Owner’s Manual and Warranty is included as well. I’m also including a number of religious tracts, not because I’m an evangelical, but because these pamphlets appear to have been with the car all its life, they are carried in the sleeve with the Owner’s Manual. These include a “God Bless This Automobile” card. I’m certainly not going to separate that card from this Volvo, which really does seem to have lived a blessed life. Service receipts are included, including one documenting a recent (in mileage, not recent in time) compression check (all cylinders at 125 psi) and another a recent new radiator and hoses. The Volvo has been stored in climate-controlled storage for the past several years, which is where I discovered it. It has been driven seldom since the previous owner retired the car from regular use. (A little over 4000 miles in the last eight years.) At some point, the grilles were covered with a fine screen, to protect them from damage. This is an indication of the level of care this car has enjoyed. Tires are near-new. Steering and suspension seem fine, though they are not ready for autocross competition. Again, this is an original, unrestored but also unmolested car, well maintained, in really nice condition. It starts and runs beautifully, and cruises like an arrow down the highway at a smooth 65-70 with the air conditioning blowing cold. And it gives every indication that it will continue to happily purr right along for many hundreds of thousands of inexpensive miles to come, as a sound used Volvo should. There is a modern Jensen stereo installed, with speakers in the panel behind the rear seat, but no speakers cut into the doors. The dash has not been cut to install this stereo. I have an original and correct Volvo radio I’ll include, should you wish to return to stock. The car comes with several spare oil filters and air filters. Happy to answer any questions. I am fairly knowledgeable about these cars, but I don’t want to get into silly debates with “experts” about some obscure aspect of originality. Happy to shoot photos of specific items or details for a serious potential buyer. The car isn’t being marketed as “Concours ready.” Rather, it is as fine an original, unrestored, “driver quality” 122 Volvo as you are likely to find. Mechanically, I haven’t been into the engine or trans at all other than to pop off the distributor cap, the cap and rotor and points are clean and appear new. Other than that, all I know is the car starts and runs great, the throttle shafts are not sloppy, there are no odd noises. I mean…it’s a B18 Volvo engine, legendary for reliability. And the transmission synchros are just fine, it shifts smoothly, no whine out of the trans. No driveshaft clunks on clutch release, no clutch slipping or chattering. You can buy restored or modified 122’s that might seem nicer, or faster. But you just never know what’s been done to them, and whether the spinner of the wrenches had a clue or where corners were cut or rust Bondo’d over. This one is honest. It’s a 117,000 mile manual transmission 122S Volvo that has been maintained by dutiful, known owners, and driven conservatively. First owner a female, second owner a physician. And I’ve only driven it a few miles locally, like to go get the air conditioning freshened up. In short, this Volvo is ready to run forever with few reliability issues and minimal maintenance expense. Winning accepted offer posts $1000 to me as a PayPal deposit within 24 hours and we negotiate further payment and delivery terms from there. No deposit, no deal, and I do not want to hear about your Cashier’s Cheque from the People’s Bank of Nairobi. I would be delighted to meet you upon your arrival at Glacier Park Airport, the 122S will have a full tank of fuel, and you can drive your new Volvo home to…anywhere, without concern. (You could even tow home a trailer filled with Montana-made purchases, because the car has a trailer hitch!) And, you will be cool, physically and spiritually, with that air conditioning on! If you want the car shipped, it’s up to you to make all the arrangements and the expenses are on you, of course. I will cooperate in any way I can with delivery to the shipper. This is a sweet Volvo 122S, an honest, sturdy, driver-quality car clearly represented as not absolutely perfect, but in really superb condition with no questions about its past (or if there are questions, you can call the people who owned it, they’d probably be happy to hear from the car’s new owner.) And the air conditioning works! There are many more photos (and I’ll be adding more) at: http://s1280.photobucket.com/user/850_Commando/library/1966%20Volvo%20122S _gsrx_vers_574 (GS 6.7.4 (574))
