1978 78 Honda Civic 1200 Hatchback Survivor Microcar Original Paint On March 16, 1978, Mr. D. Jordan walked into Rosenthal Imports of Washington, DC, and took delivery of his new Honda Civic. This little 78,000 mi. survivor (as stated on title) still retains its original paint, interior, and matching number engine (as per warranty ID). Pull the manual choke, two pumps on the accelerator, and instantly the little 1238 cc, or 75.48 ci engine, comes to life. Idles nice and smooth. The four-speed manual trans shifts effortlessly. These cars were capable of 40 mpg. Original interior, dash has no cracks or warping, all gauges, lights work. Headliner is mint! Seats show some wear, carpet is very nice, a couple of holes on driver’s side. Complete with original spare, jack, original tool kit, and lug and jack wrench. Nice original Honda glass with no chips, gouges or wiper marks. First gen Civics were laden with rust, that’s why there are so few around. Honda signed a consent decree with the Fed Trade Commission providing owners with free rust repairs, replacement, or cash reimbursements for three years after purchase. Is there rust? Under carpets, seats and rear spare tire well, shiny factory paint is revealed with only MINOR surface rust. Undercarriage is ab-so-lutely rust-free, along with rockers, under doors, door pillars, and wheel wells. Not a drop of filler. Shock towers, suspension, also show no presence of rust. The only weak spot (repairable) is the front nose of the hood. Metal is thin with a small hole. Stainless strip on roof of car between accessory luggage rack is missing.
