Vehicle Detail
The most popular hot rod seems to be a 1932 Ford roadster highboy. The 1933 and 1934 full fendered roadsters are also very popular. I’ve always been partial to the fat fendered 1935 Ford cabriolet. Here’s a car that is a little different and could be called a hot rod, street rod, sports rod, sports car, or rat rod, depending on how you view these things. In 1936, 1937, 1938 and 1939 the Swallow Sidecar Company (Jaguar after WWII) built the SS100, considered then, and now, as one of the most beautiful cars in the world. The SS came from the company name and the 100 from the fact it could easily do 100MPH; not an easy feat in 1936. This car, titled as a 1937 Jaguar SS100, is a fiberglass replica originally assembled from a kit in the mid 1980’s using a Ford Pinto as a donor car: four banger engine, C3 automatic transmission, 6.75” rear end, steering column, hand break, radiator, and front suspension components (which, fortunately, were the same as used on the Mustang II). The car now sports a 1989 Mustang GT 302 (5L) HO engine, T5 five speed transmission, and 8.8” positraction rear end (shortened 2 inches to fit with new custom made axles). The Mustang II front suspension has been completely rebuilt and power steering added. The Pinto radiator has been replaced with a new 1965 Mustang radiator, modified slightly to fit. Of the original Pinto parts only the steering column and hand break remain. The cockpit has been lengthened 7” for additional leg and arm room, and the seats with headrests were purchased specially to fit. The wiring is a Painless 18 circuit harness. The tachometer, speedometer (GPS) and quad (gas, oil, temp, battery) instruments are Speedhut. The windshield frame and headlight bars have been re-chromed and halogen blue dot tribar headlights mounted using stainless steel headlight buckets. Modified MG Midget top bows have been fitted to the car. A Vintage Air heater was installed for those colder days. And, the car has new tires mounted on REAL chrome wire wheels.
