Vehicle Detail
This is a California westy with zero rust and only 86k verified miles on the working odometer. This camper will cruise all day long at 60-mph and deliver 28 - 32 mpg. Everything works - the refrigerator on 12VDC, 120VAC, and propane. It will make ice. Both stove burners work flawlessly. The electric pump in the sink delivers water as it should. The rear seat makes a comfortable bed, and the front seats swivel 360-degrees and when the front table is installed, make a cozy dinette. The late model pop-top canvas is new, screened, and allows for front access. I've removed the upper mattresses and associated hardware, which will be included in the sale. Since my children are almost as old as I am, there's no need for an upper berth and the extra space makes a great storage bin for lightweight stuff such as towels, bedding, clothes, pretzels and chips. I had the useless rear windows removed and replaced with heavy gauge sheet metal and support struts. Visibility is absolutely unimpaired, but privacy is greatly increased. This is the third and last westy I'll own and I've wanted to do the window treatment on the previous ones but never got around to it. I've been super pleased with the result. All those windows did was allow the sun to cook the upholstery and cabinetry. Along with disposing of the windows, I also had the three exterior plastic water and electricity access panels removed. I installed a marine grade house-power electric outlet on the rear bumper trim, and fill the water tank from either inside the van or through the window. Uncomplicated and uncluttered. A full awning attaches to the rain gutter and opens with a crank handle. The awning is stored in my garage and goes with the van when sold (photo included). Both Wesfalia tables, large and small, are in excellent condition. Absolutely everything in this Westy looks and functions like new. The remanufactured engine has been driven less than 15k miles since it was installed. The rebuilt injector pump was installed 2k miles ago. The diesel DZ transmission was removed four years ago and replaced with a low mileage DX transmission (50k) from a 1982 air-cooled vanagon. At this time the entire clutch assembly was replaced. The result of this modification is greatly reduced engine noise and rpm at cruising speeds with no discernable sacrifice in acceleration. It makes a big difference in noise level, and the engine no longer screams at cruising speed. The entire driving experience is a considerably more pleasant experience. Additionally, it also provides the ideal drivetrain for an easy upgrade to an AAZ 1.9 L NA or Turbo-diesel engine. Virtually all that needs to be done is to acquire a 1.9 L engine and drop it in. All routine maintenance has been conscientiously accomplished. I've replaced many parts and accessories. To name a few, all drive belts, hoses, new cigarette lighter and socket, transmission shifter bushings, four wheel alignment, original VW alloy wheels, both front grilles, thermostat, rear shocks, brakes and trailer hitch. The hitch has only been used to tow an empty motorcycle trailer from my storage unit to my garage - a distance of three miles. The upholstery and curtains are original, and apart from some sun fading, in remarkably good condition. This westy is an extremely reliable vehicle that I wouldn't hesitate to drive cross country. It's easy to work on, inexpensive to operate, and fun to drive. I can't list enough complimentary comments on these vans in general and mine in particular. Whoever ends up winning this auction will be exceedingly pleased, and I know I'll suffer from seller's remorse. This westy is a beauty, and everyone who sees it agrees.
