Running around trying to find the BEST cars, trucks, and motorcycles to offer you on eBay is what I have done for many years, and having sold a few thousand of them, rarely does a car stop me in my tracks.
This 1939 is so incredibly nice, it not only stopped me, it practically knocked me over!
Although I am a die-hard 1932 Ford kind of guy, when I saw this amazing street rod, and looked at the incredible attention to detail, and the quality of components used in the build, I couldn’t help but like it. After 20 minutes and a dozen miles behind the wheel, I knew I had to have it!

DESCRIPTION
WOW. That is what 3 out 4 people say the first time you show them this car. The other one said a word I cannot use on eBay, but it was said in the most complimentary fashion!
This 1939 Ford is simply stunning. It is like the Supermodel of cars, and just oozes elegance, class, style, and sex appeal.
The gorgeous finish is the first thing that grabs you about the car, and with good reason... it practically looks like new!
The finish is glossy, slick and wet, and shines just as good in the glow of a streetlight as it does in the noon day sun.
The car started with a custom GIBBONS body that was then hand sanded, trimmed, and fit to the closest tolerances prior to being treated to multiple coats of Harley Davidson VIVID BLACK and Corvette Sebring Silver paint.
The beautiful two-tone finish was lovingly color-sanded and then buffed to perfection under multiple layers of clear, and tastefully split by a hand laid pair of pin stripes.
There are less than a handful or so truly minor marks in the finish of the car, and most sellers would call it perfect and move on. I am not most sellers.
There are tiny pencil point sized stone chips on the underside of the fascia and running boards, a small hairline scuff or so, and a few other little minor marks. NO DENTS, NO BIG CHIPS, NO BIG SCRATCHES, NO DAMAGE.
These are little marks that won’t even show up in pictures, and I get as close as ANYBODY with the camera. I just want you to know that they are present, but will probably come out when you take the time to detail the car.
Fit and finish is classic Gibbons, and the doors close with that confidence inspiring thud. Hood lifts easily, and closes solidly, while the power actuated trunk lifts and shuts with a solid seal and no issues.
Fender and running boards are seamlessly integrated and have matching Silverstone welting.
The front of the car is set off by the polished stainless steel FORD grill insert that shines brighter than chrome.
Two FORD teardrop style headlamps light the way, and the chrome bezels show like new.
In back, tear drop tail lamps work perfectly, and the included billet aluminum license plate frame (not shown in the photos) wires into the lights to provide a working license plate light.
Dual polished stainless steel exhaust tips peek out just enough in back, and sound excellent, with a healthy rumble that let’s everyone know you are a Hot Rodder, without being obnoxious.
The split windscreen is another GIBBONS hallmark, and really gives the car a look of authenticity you don’t see in other bodies.
Most people who see the car think it is steel, and are flabbergasted when you take a magnet to it and it doesn’t stick. The car is so well laid out, the lines so clean, and the treatment so period correct, it really shows like a steel car.
That is why GIBBONS was World renown for the 39’ body they created.
The GIBBONS removable hardtop is covered on the outside by HAARTZ to be weatherproof, long-lasting, and durable. It still shows like new with no rips, tears, seam pulls, or issues.
The builder addressed the biggest problems in hardtop cabriolets, window leaks, by having a custom set of window channels and rubber weather stripping made for the car and integrated into the top to make sure that when the windows go up, the water stays out! It is one of the nicest designs I have seen, and truly makes this car an all-weather driver.
Polished lollipop mirrors, a billet fuel cap, and billet wiper arms finish off the brightwork and trim on the car, and all show like new.
It rolls on a set of CRAGAR 5 Spoke vintage style rims with CRAGAR center caps and custom valve cap stems. The rims still show like new, with no curb marks or damage evident.
Tires are BF Goodrich Touring T/A up front, size P195/70R14, while monster P235/70R15 BF Goodrich Radial T/A’s handle things in back. All of the tires are plug and damage free, and have just over 4,000 miles since new.
Use one of the two included remotes to put the windows down and open the door, or simply use the hidden foot switch to unlatch it, and you are greeted by a professionally finished interior with all the comforts you could ask for.
The dual bucket seats were custom cut down and fit to the car, and have fore/aft adjustability as well as recline. They are trimmed in a combination of charcoal and dove gray leatherette that looks absolutely amazing.
Door panels, kick panels, rear surround, rear seat and base, headliner, and valence panels are also covered in the same two-tone finish, and all of it looks fantastic, with no damage evident.
Carpeting is a custom automotive grade matting that was custom cut and banded prior to being installed over a layer over sound and heat proofing material. It shows like new, and comes with a set of heavy duty matching color mats to protect it.
Rear seat and surround panel looks fantastic, and is big enough to hold a kid or your favorite 4-legged companion. The seat lifts to reveal access to the battery, and the car comes with an included battery tender to keep it plugged in at full charge no matter how long you leave it sit.
Rear panel houses the KENWOOD KDC-MP208 AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, and it functions from upfront via the wireless remote that does everything from the palm of your hand.
The system sounds great though the speakers hidden throughout the car, and makes everything from Sinatra to Stone Temple Pilots sound good!
The custom made center console holds two cup holders, the power window switch pod, and provides a base for the LOKAR shifter with contrasting boot and chrome installation plate.
The painted dash holds a full set of VDO Performance gauges – from left to right- OIL / SPEEDOMETER-TRIP/VOLT/TEMP/FUEL.
All of the gauges appear to be functioning and accurate, but I have not individually calibrated each one.
A VINTAGE AIR control panel controls temperature duties in the cabin, and looks great doing it. A/C is an R134A system since new, and chills the car easily, even in our 100 degree Florida heat.
An IDIDIT tilt column with custom billet drop looks fantastic in the car, is painted to match, and has billet controls for tilt, signal, and hazard operation.
It is topped with a billet steering wheel, whose only issue is a peeling black out wrap. I am trying to find a suitable cover for it, and will include it with the car if I do.
Chrome A/C vents round out the dash trim and keep things clean.
The top is easily removed by two people by unfastening the 7 clamps in the inside of the car, and simply lifting it up and off. It weighs about 50 or so pounds I would guess, and two of us moved it without much of an issue at all.
The car looks just as beautiful with the roof off as it does on, and the clean lines of the body really shine through when it is in roadster form.
Wind buffeting is not too bad, since older cars were NOT designed in a wind tunnel, and you get tons of looks, picture-takers, and thumbs-up signs from passerby whenever you drive it.
The chassis on the car is Gibbons proprietary unit that has boxed rails, cross-bracing, integral driveshaft loop, tubular A-ARM front suspension with Coil-over-shock setup, rear leaf with lowering kit and smoothed 9” Ford rear end with 3.23 final drive, and performance shocks all around.
The chassis is rock solid, stable, and the perfect base for this incredible street machine.
Front disc brakes join the rear drums to drag this thing down from speed quickly, and with no abnormal fade, modulation, or pulling issues.
Steering is quick and light thanks to the MUSTANG II rack up front, and car handles great thanks to a suspension that is just stiff enough to keep the car from wallowing and not hooking up off the line, but soft enough to make those long highway cruises a joy.
Everything underneath is clean, and not covered up by globs of undercoating and “hide-it-all”. Just metal with a little dirt and grime that you could clean up with a pressure washer and a Saturday morning.
All bushings, fittings, lines, hoses, etc., are in great condition, and being only a few years and 4,000 odd miles old, still function like new.
The motor was ordered from GMPP, and it is a 290hp engine that was built with longevity, ease of maintenance, and long-term reliability in mind.
Dressed to the hilt in billet, chrome, and other goodies, the engine is clean, neat, and should detail up to look like new when you clean the car.
It sounds great rumbling through the block hugger headers that feed into a custom fabricated exhaust with Flowmaster style mufflers. A nice stealthy rumble that sounds like a Viper or Z06 when you give it the gas.
The engine is mated to the custom built 350 turbo transmission from Precision Transmission, and it has a VERY mild shift kit with a low RPM stall to make sure shifting is smooth and pleasing to driver and passenger, but still has the grunt to “Git-R-Done” when you need to.
The custom made and balanced driveshaft hooks to the aforementioned smoothed 9” rear, and the whole thing works together seamlessly to provide a reliably, and practically bulletproof powertrain for daily driving enjoyment.
The car has not leaked, weeped, or left a mark on the shop floor, and seems to be about as tightly built as anything we have had before.
It starts, idles, and runs out strong, with no misses, hiccups, or issues.
The car has plenty of power, and will smoke the tires with ease by simply pressing the gas pedal, but it is also so highway friendly that 75 mph Interstate cruising makes you feel like you borrowed your neighbors Lexus.
It handles great, rides great, steers great, and stops great. Brakes scrub off speed with no fanfare or issues, and the car does not pull or wander, even in a panic stop situation.
Thanks to the massive upgrades to the cooling system, the car runs as cool as a cucumber, even in our current 100 degree Florida weather.
It stays about 186 without the air on, and then creeps to 193 with the air on full blast while in town.
Getting stuck in beach traffic last Sunday found the temp rising to 198, but that was as high as I have seen it in the 100 or so miles of driving I have done in the car.
This car has just over 4,000 miles since new, and performs flawlessly each time you turn the key to take it out. If you are looking for a car that you can drive, enjoy, and then park in the garage until the next time you call on it, this is the one for you.
It is ready to go to a car show RIGHT NOW, and doesn’t need to be put on a trailer to do it! You could take this 39 Ford on that dream trip down Route 66 or just drive it to local shows. It will do it all, and do it all well.
