Vehicle Detail

1969 Chevy C20 long bed 2WD. ("The Beast") Unrestored original California truck. Not that many unrestored, undestroyed original California 67-72's left.... This one is located in San Diego, CA. Serial number: CE249Z810208. Last fall, I bought The Beast from its second owner (it's only been in two families prior to me), who provided a nice oral history of this little slice of Americana. Born on September 20, 1968, The Beast apparently spent the first 20 years or so of its life toiling as a work truck for a chimney contractor in San Francisco. Possession of The Beast later passed to the chimney contractor's grandson. Grandson brought it to San Diego in the late 1980's. Presumably unable to feed The Beast or control it in any meaningful way, The Beast was subsequently sold to the second owner, who bought it for around-the-house chores and some landscaping duty. The second owner had custody of The Beast for the last about 25 years or so and did a good job caretaking, as The Beast transitioned into his golden years. The Beast is smog exempt in California. 3/4 Ton. Has a Chevy 350 V-8 (originally a 307 truck). Brand new (February 2014) Edelbrock four barrel carb. Edelbrock Performer intake. Custom headers and dual exhaust (by San Diego custom exhaust guru Ed Hanson). Turbo 400 transmission. Electronic HEI ignition. 350 has less than 10k miles on it according to second owner. No records to verify that mileage, but it runs smoothly. Fires up with no problem from cold and has great oil pressure. Runs cool. True miles on truck unknown but I assume the odometer has been rolled over at least once. Currently showing 88k but I listed it at 188k. The Beast looks great. Runs great. Gets up and goes. Sounds mean. The Beast is not slow, and I sure as hell wouldn't say so anywhere near it. If you're looking for a running/driving vintage truck, you couldn't do much better than seeking custody of The Beast. For those of you who are into the rat rod "shop truck" look with original patina, all I can say is The Beast is the real deal. I get compliments all the time - at stop lights, putting gas in it, etc. It gets a lot of attention and everyone loves an unrestored vintage truck. I put 50 miles on it just this morning and it's fun to thunder across intersections and up the on-ramps, I have to admit. It just sounds great. This really is the perfect example to drive, further resto-mod, or restore. You can go any direction with it. The truck has mostly original paint, except for the roof (original paint under primer). The hood is from another truck. I looked long and hard to find one. Original paint on the hood and it matches pretty well as you can see. Similar patina. Original interior. Registration paid through 12/14. Lots of recent work in last few months, including: New flex plate (flyweel), new American made starter, new fan clutch and all new belts. New coil. New hoses. New plugs. New wires. New rotor and cap. Exhaust manifold gaskets and donut gaskets replaced. Valve cover gaskets replaced. Valve covers painted. Trans flushed with new filter. Trans pan cover painted. New gasket. Carb rebuilt. Fuel lines in engine bay replaced. New fuel filter. Timing just set. New thermostat. Coolant flushed. New breather and air filters. The goal was to get the truck to be reliable, to start and run and stop without any drama and at this point it is doing exactly that. The Beast comes with his original build sheet (built in California and never left), along with service records dating to the 1980's from various California shops through 2014. And the original owner's manual. Dash pad is cracked from the California sun as you can see. It is easy to get a replacement one though - they are available online for about $70 from www.brotherstrucks.com along with just about all other parts. Clear California title shows that it was first titled here in 1968. The Beast has never lived anywhere but California, and it has never been owned by anyone outside of California - together I think this explains its well preserved condition and great patina. The truck is very solid. Nothing more than California-species surface rust in the usual terminal cancer spots that typically plague C10/20 cabs. That said, the rain drip rails have some rust in them and the original oak bed needs to be replaced. It's covered in plywood for now. As with some other aging beasts, it has cataracts (i.e. it needs a windshield as the one it has is cracked.) I may have it replaced by the time the auction is over but regardless it will be included with the truck. I also have a set of the black beltline trim so the piece you see missing in the photos can easily be replaced. Overall, The Beast is very straight and unrestored. It comes with all sorts of attitude and, for added awesomeness, vintage "Like a Rock" floor mats. One more thing - I just installed a high quality repro replacement rearview mirror (original one was no longer reflective). Original mounting base reused. But now you can see behind you! (Original GM day/night mirror will be included with the truck in case you want to have new mirror glass cut for it. I'm happy to answer any questions you might have. I'm also happy to help coordinate shipping and will take the truck to a shipping depot in San Diego. Anything I can do to help. Just ask. Feel free to email me if you have any questions.
