Vehicle Detail
Hey Everyone, I have a 1968 American Motors AMX 390ci with 51,928 original miles for sale. This car is a project car and does not currently run. But, it is a great, and I mean GREAT car to begin your restoration with. Not only is the car 99% complete and original, but it is also a true 390ci automatic trimmed with the Go-Package and factory AC. This car has lived its entire life here in sunny California, inland from the bay so there isn'y any serious rust that can be found on the car. The only rust that can be found is light surface spots on the body and on the suspension parts, but that's typical with almost any car that is 45 years old. The car was completely accident free until recently when having the car towed to a mechanic's shop the front passenger tire came loose and pushed itself up into the front fender well, bending the fender. The undercarriage nor suspension parts never made contact with the road. You can see the damage in my photos, but I did not want to bondo up this classic with a crappy fix. And I'm sure the new owner will easily be able to straighten this out. The body is super straight and only contains a few tiny dents. The paint is faded, but mostly original. The car looks like a rust bucket due to the faded paint, but I assure you it is anything but. Let the pictures do all the talking. The car was being stored outside a few years ago, but covered. Since we get about 20 days of rain here annually, over time the contact between the car cover and the car trapped some moisture and began to eat at the Rally stripes. It was unfortunate, but we had to deal with it before it worsened. We had the trunk and the hood sanded and sealed to prevent any rust penetration. The roof was treated as well, but did not receive as much detailed attention and has some surface rust, but it looks worse then it actually is. I recently had the car put back into the DMV system and non-opted, so there aren't any back fee's. I have the clean CA title in hand, along with both the front and back original black/yellow plates as well as both original dealership license plate frames. Unfortunately I am missing the door key, but have the ignition and the glove box keys. I also have some original documentation and a service book. I forgot to take pictures of that stuff, but I will try to get some this week and update my ad. The car has been stored in doors for the past few years and has some work done to it. I was planning on restoring the car myself, but since finding out the motor will not turn over by hand, and the amount of other projects I have it was time to let this one get away. Before I decided that I had replaced the master brake cylinder, inner & outer front bearing seals, rotors and a new alternator. The car also has period correct 14" Cragar rims that were purchased by the original owner back in the 70's. In the pictures the rear and front rims were accidentally switched by the mechanic and it looks odd. The rear rim has a much fatter lip then the fronts, but you can barley tell in the pictures. Sorry about that! There is also some sort of ignition kill switch mounted under the radio which was installed at the dealership back in the 60's. I don't have any more information on it, but if necessary I can snap a closeup for you. - I will be taking paypal, but if you do not use the "gift feature" which eludes the 3% fee then the fee will be added onto the final price. I will also take a cashiers check, but only will release the car and title once that check clears. - Shipping will need to be arranged by the buyer, but I will be able to assist somewhat. The car does roll perfectly fine so getting it onto a trailer shouldn't be a problem. If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask. I will be starting this action somewhat high, but only because I will not be placing a reserve on the price and will let the true collectors determine its worth to them. So bid high or bid often! Thank you all!On Oct-16-13 at 11:46:23 PDT, seller added the following information: Additional Info: Door Code - BODY: R023347MODEL: 6839-7TRIM: 832APAINT: 50AE099907 Valve Cover Tag - I will be heading out to the shop tonight to look for this tag. Thx!On Oct-16-13 at 23:47:24 PDT, seller added the following information: Updating my ad based of questions that I've received: • The space saver spare tire measures aprx. 18" across.• I did not find a valve cover tag and the valve covers were chrome.• The car has all the locks (ignition, door, trunk & glove box) and I have keys to all of them but the door.On Oct-19-13 at 12:41:13 PDT, seller added the following information: UPDATE - 10/19/13 Valve covers appear original and have the sheet metal screw on the back of the Driver side cover. However, the ID plate is missing and was torn off as a tiny piece of the tag remains. The numbers on the steering box plate are 5689023 on one side of the plate with a 2 on the second line. There is also 116 8 on the other side of the plate. I DO have all that keys for the original locks. The ignition key and door keys are one and the same. I just needed to work the door lock a bit for it to turn. When I stated 99% original it is because the car has only had the rims (14" cragers - I do have the original hubcaps though) the master cylinder, the rotors, and the alternator replaced. Everything else is original. I have a log book maintained by the original owner which details the month, year and milage of his repairs and maintenance.I even have some of his receipts. The book begins in 8/12/68 and goes up to 1/14/81 where the milage was 50,857. He even documented the mpg he was getting throughout the years. This car was thoroughly maintained up until it was parked for whatever reason in 1981. Of course I will be including the log book with the sale. This book also contains what the owner bought (see exact verbiage below) and the price + tax & license $4341.00 1968 AMX - 390 CIDpower steeringpower disc brakesautomatic transmission undercoatingvisetrly group (cannot read the handwriting)light groupam/fm radioair conditionerperformance go package Please note that there were only 2287 AMX's made in this 390/auto combo in 1968.
