Vehicle Detail
1979 FORD MUSTANG FACTORY ORIGINAL OFFICIAL INDY PACE CAR REPLICA 1 OF 10, 478 OFFICIAL INDY PACE CAR REPLICAS 35 years ago the FOX BODY MUSTANG was born. In 1979, Ford produced 369, 936 Mustangs and this new car was definitely another winner for Ford. A special run of 10, 478 Indy Pace Car Mustang replicas were assembled to commemorate the specially prepared Mustangs chosen to pace the Indy 500. These were built between April and July, 1979. Although the actual Pace cars were all powered by the 5.0 liter V-8, the replicas could either be 2.3 liter turbocharged four or the 5.0 liter V-8. The last time Mustang was chosen to pace the Indy 500 was in 1964 and at that time, about 100 pace car replica Mustangs were built. Naturally, the Pace cars had to look different; they were all finished in pewter with black trim and orange-red-black striping. “Mustang” was spelled out in large orange and red block letters along both sides of the hood and a red-orange stripe was on the side of the car. Galloping ponies were also used on the sides of the car. Other decals came in a box with the car and it was up to the customer whether or not they would be installed. These said “Official Pace Car 63rd Annual Indianapolis 500”, the race date May 27, 1979 and the Indianapolis shield. Included with the Pace Car package were halogen headlights with removable bulbs, front air-dam with fog lights, rear deck lid spoiler, non-functional hood scoop (facing backwards), blacked-out trim, special front grille, dual orange molding on blacked out bumpers, Recaro seats in black and white trim, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and engine-tuned dash. Also included was a sunroof, center console with digital clock, AM/FM stereo radio with cassette or 8-track, interval wipers, dual remote outside mirrors and a special Indianapolis Motor Speedway rectangular plaque. All in all, it was a fairly loaded package. All of the pace car styling cues were later used on the 1980 Cobra, even the recaro seats were made an option. So, here you have a very nice and original 1979 Mustang Indy Pace Car Replica equipped with the 5.0L V8 and Manual Transmission. The engine was rebuilt using all original parts at 100,000 miles . I'm the 4th Owner of this car. This is a fun car to drive as the Recaro seats (worn but not torn) hold you in place and the 302 runs smooth and pulls well through the manual transmission. All of this is riding on the very desirable TRX design wheels, which are quite unique. They measure 390 mm, or 15.35 x 5.9 inches wide and include the special tires manufactured by Michelin. The Fox body Mustang is quickly becoming more collectible than ever and the 1979 is a great place to start whether you are adding to your collection or just getting started. Original Pewter Metallic exterior paint; original interior; original factory decals on this desirable 3 door hatchback. Removable sunroof; 8-Track deck; ready to go and enjoy… Don’t miss this opportunity to own an original Mustang Pace Car.
