Vehicle Detail
1971 Charming Classic Karmann Ghia- California car with dealer’s original Tom Mason Volkswagen manual showing Fresno as the point of origin. Has been in storage for many years indoors and when outside was covered. Always kept current on a Non- Op Permit for California. Car must be trailered. Car owned by parts person who worked for Volkswagen parts importers. The parts listed and replaced were specifically of German manufacture, and replaced at Fred’s Garage in Redwood City, California in the 1990’s. These parts have less than 300 miles on them since replaced and the car was placed in storage shortly afterward. Replaced parts: · Front Rotors: ATE, Repco pads, In/Out Front Wheel Bearings: Fag , · Steering box: TRW, · Tie Rod Ends: TRW, · Ball joints : TRW · Steering Stabilizer: Sachs, · Master Cylinder: Ate, · Rear drums: Ate, Rear Wheel Cylinders: Ate, · New rear shoes aftermarket, · Clutch disc Japan and plate Sachs, T/O Sachs · Transmission mounts ,Tranny seal OEM · Accelerator cables and clutch cable German. · Solex Pict 3 · Rear shocks: KYB · CVJ boots · Bound to be other items installed ! · New battery as of 02/2013. · New parts assorted boxed see photo: New German Sachs front struts and assemblies · Hirschman antenna, pillar door weatherstrip, additional spare clutch and accelerator cables, Bowden tube · Bosch German “044’points ,Elring sump kits and valve cover gaskets headlight bucket rubber etc. · Chrome trim strips · Door Check straps OEM · Inner door pins · NOS knobs for quarter windows · Aluminum emergency push rod tube assemblies · Window squeegees etc. etc. see photo for show and tell….. Several weather strip items replaced including quarter window. fuel gauge and sender replaced. All electrical appears working. carpet 19 piece Interior complete carpet kit installed at Fred’s in Redwood City. Head liner in fair condition- small rip could use cleaning. Dash board has aftermarket plastic topper. Vintage rear deck travel chrome tube luggage rack with straps. A fantastic 3 point fully auto-retractable seat belt system installed that was originally imported by Overland Parts for update conversion. Vintage under dash web tray and Kamei plastic shift tray. Standard seats with finicky mechanism. New OEM Brazil ignition switch and black, door handles with 2 sets of keys. Technics Stereo and power amp works great. This car was driven and performed fine when it was running back in the day considering a high mileage engine. Nothing special. Small leaks and weepy as normal. A stock dual port 1600 with a new Solex Pict 3 And dual vacuum advance. Starter strong, transmission worked in all gears and drive train fine. House of Ghia- Oregon Parts illustrated catalog is the best.! Pans and floors, rockers and all the rails and threshold sills etc. are solid. Small corrosion hole under battery box. This car may have had an oil cooler installed at one time as I can’t think of any other reason for several holes drilled underneath the license plate. Body work noted on right rear quarter panel. Simple low budget paint job noted. Car underside has had a factory undercoat. Of course it has been outside and has collected dust and tumble weed residue. Has not seen a good bath in years! Slight oxidation here and there.. Comes with original VW hood badge not shown. Note: since trying to get this car up and running for sale recently, new battery and priming of gas in carb provided quick start up and idle and running on all four cylinders however it seems to starve out of gas and dies shortly thereafter. Could be carb-idle solenoid, fuel pump, gas dirt/sediment in tank etc. etc. A tank cleaning would be advised for new owner. If we had a spare simple used working Solex Pict 1 and or a used fuel pump and a clean tank to eliminate trouble this car should run just fine as it is. It is a high mileage engine. Still has some miles to go before it sleeps. If I was keeping I would rebuild engine and drive it off in the sunset. This is a good solid Ghia and with some love and attention can be back on the autobahn. We are moving and Karmann must find a new home.!!!
