Vehicle Detail
1984 was a weird year, as people looked for parallels to the George Orwell novel of a grim future. The perfect antidote to this was a red Pininfarina Azzurra convertible! Fiat introduced the 124 Spider in 1966, and made continual upgrades to its classic roadster. When Fiat left the U.S. in 1983, the car was too good to be abandoned, so designer Pininfarina saw that it continued to be sold here under its own badge. Among those familiar with these cars, this final series is noted for improved quality and its values have held strong. According to the Hagerty website, market average is holding steady (currently $7864). This particular example is above average and would be a very good deal at that price -- and a good deal it will likely be, since I have set a very modest reserve. This car is a relatively rare automatic. People are often surprised to see this. It strikes me as being a very good unit, and well-suited to this car and its engine. I have driven the car on back roads and on the highway and while I am used to driving my own manual transmission Fiats and Alfas, this car did not disappoint at all. It's responsive and quick and yet happy to accommodate those who prefer to give their left leg a break (or the many folks who have a spouse or partner who prefers an automatic and wants to share in the fun). This is a nice car to start with. A solid, clean example. It belongs to a friend of mine who is a Fiat and Alfa Romeo technician by trade. He would not have gotten involved with the car if it were not a worthy example. Under his ownership it has had several recent upgrades: Fresh correct red paint, classy new cloth top, and new vinyl seat covers. This car is ready to be driven and enjoyed. It will turn plenty of heads and make your neighbors wish they had one too. It is not going to win the Pebble Beach concours, but if it did you couldn't enjoy driving it anyway, right? There is not much for the next owner to do. The car currently is wired for a stereo but does not have one installed. That's to my read its biggest shortcoming, and an easy one to address. This car has a clean CarFax that I am happy to show. It spent most of its life in the DC area. There is one strange thing however regarding the mileage. My mechanic recorded it as 66,787 when renewing his registration last December, but it now shows 61,034. He has no explanation for how this happened. One possibility is that it rolled over to 70,000 and the 6 did not roll. That is why I have put the mileage as 71,034. I have a lot of experience with these cars and am confident the mileage is in this low range. The car is at my house in Alexandria, VA. If you are local please come have a look and drive! If you live far away, I hope the photos and text here help, and I welcome any questions. You can fly in to DCA, IAD or BWI and make it to my place pretty easily, then see the sights of DC before driving your new Pininfarina Spider home.
