Vehicle Detail
86 Toyota 4Runner 4X4 Turbo Diesel = no smog check ever! A Toyota 4Runner 4X4 diesel?... ...that is registered as a diesel in California and doesn't need any smog check ever?... ...and even more, it has a 370+ miles range on a full tank? Yes, you read that right. This is a custom built vehicle for the outdoors-man or survivalist. Perfect for hunting trips or getting out of town when the next big one hits. It is an 1986 Toyota 4Runner equipped with a Mercedes turbo diesel engine Odometer shows 250K miles, engine is 140K miles. The engine is Mercedes model OM617, 3L, 5 cyl, turbo charged. The donor car was a Merceds 300SD with 140,000 miles on board that was hit in the back and totaled. Engine and injection pump were tested on the bench by a diesel specialist, the pump is like new, gaskets changed and the engine compression is excellent in all cylinders. These engines are renowned for simplicity and longevity. They routinely last well over 500,000+ miles and those who know nicknamed them "the million mile engine". It is a bulletproof motor, nothing electronic & fancy but it will last forever and this is exactly why I picked it when I built this "end of days" truck. Interior was completely redone in January. That includes the camper shell headliner, rear side panels, both seats, carpet, arm rest, shifter vinyl cover, rear cargo/sleeping area. The only interior parts that still need reconditioning are the two sun visors, I planned to buy new. The body has zero rust, this is a southern California car. There are a couple of minor dings and bumps in the body panels but no rust. Sound dampening and proofing was done when the car was put toghether so there is surprisingly little engine noise inside (for a diesel, that is). The paint is faded and could use a quick paint job. Link to video here: http://youtu.be/yjBc-w6Lz5M Please take note the video was shot before the interior and upholstery of the vehicle was completely redone and the winch and snorkel installed You can see a 20 picture photo album of the vehicle here:http://imageshack.us/g/1/10140671/ Highlights: - factory 4 cylinder 86 HP engine replaced with a Mercedes OM617 five cylinder in line turbo diesel 125 HP engine - factory 4 speed Toyota automatic transmission replaced with a manual 5 speed manual Toyota truck transmission. - high performance XTR Stage 3 clutch kit installed. - mechanical fan replaced with a high performance super thin electric fan for better cooling and increased engine power. - stock air filter replaced with K&N Apollo high flow air filter for increased engine power. - high performance Rancho steering stabilizer shock for better on and off road handling. - 120 Amps battery. - factory 55 Amp alternator replaced with 110 Amp alternator, new beefed-up 2 gauge wires installed. - high performance stainless steel exhaust pipe and muffler. - cold air intake snorkel - newly redone upholstery, carpet and headliner - sleeping platform built in the back, fits a twin mattress - trail jack - electric winch - separate gauges for oil pressure, battery, engine temperature and turbo boost. ...and many more. The vehicle is off road tested in several trips to the desert and mountain trails. On highway, sand, mud or wading through the water, it performed flawlessly every time. It cruises on the highway at 70 mph and it is capable of driving at 85 mph - but speed isn't what this truck is about, rather fuel efficiency, increased range and off-road capability. Average fuel mileage for a typical trip from Los Angeles to Jawbone Canyon in Mojave (including 4 hours driving 1st and 2nd gear on dirt roads while hunting in the desert) is 22-24 miles per gallon. Considering the fuel tank holds 17.5 gallons of diesel, the range of the vehicle is conservatively estimated at 370+ miles on a full tank. That is a 40% improvement in range and fuel economy over the standard 4 cylinder Toyota gasoline engine. Another plus: in case of emergency or extreme fuel shortage the vehicle can run on WVO (waste vegetable oil) as it is. If you plan to drive it on a colder climate region, I recommend the installation of a conversion kit including heated oil filter and fuel tank. On the negative side: -car has no stereo -reverse driving lights and horn need fixing -no A/C, there is simply no room in the engine compartment for it. But the top comes down in the summer months. -could use a coat of fresh paint. - the RPM gauge is not functional - I couldn't figure out a way to hook it up The vehicle is registered and titled as a diesel in the State of California so it can be sold and the diesel title transferred to California buyers. IMPORTANT!: I cannot guarantee this to buyers from other states so if you live outside California and intend to place a bid PLEASE DO YOUR OWN RESEARCH and find out if your State laws allow you to register a diesel converted vehicle. Be forewarned I have no knowledge nor responsibility regarding vehicle registration in your home State. Transport arrangements are the obligation of the buyer. The vehicle is sold as is, no warranty expressed or implied. I reserve the right to end the auction early. WE DO NOT SWAP DIESEL ENGINES IN TOYOTA TRUCKS SO PLEASE DO NOT CALL OR EMAIL US IF YOU WANT TO BUILD ONE. ONLY THE VEHICLE USED IN THE CREATION OF THE VIDEO (SEE BELOW) IS FOR SALE. Link to video of the vehicle for sale here: http://youtu.be/yjBc-w6Lz5M On May-10-13 at 20:51:45 PDT, seller added the following information: Odometer shows 250K miles but real mileage is unknown since previous owner (a mechanic shop manager) swapped the original 4 gauge cluster for a 6 gauge cluster before selling me the truck. Also to answer all the questions in emails: -the truck has no rust anywhere -it has a clean title, never been involved in accidents -the body is straight -steering is precise, no play in the steering wheel -shocks and struts are good, no bouncing when driving on uneven road -three layers of sound proofing: a layer of noise deadening material, one layer of heat and sound proofing material, topped with the just installed carpet layer. -rear drum brakes done last month, including installation of new brake cylinders -clutch master and slave cylinders replaced two weeks ago -4X4 works, both HI and LO, as well as the front wheel locking hubs -all the belts, hoses, radiator, alternator, water pump, fan, gaskets, clutch, heater core, oil cooler - and every other part you can think of, was replaced less than 5,000 miles ago. This is a VERY solid and dependable truck I built for hunting trips in the desert; when I built it I replaced every part that could break down because being stranded in the Mojave is no fun. On May-10-13 at 21:02:19 PDT, seller added the following information: -rear top (camper shell) is removable and the SUV can be transformed in a pick-up truck. -there is also a factory installed roll bar behind the front seats. -the vehicle has no rear bench, the platform behind the front seats is flat and can be use as a sleeping area or to haul stuff. On May-15-13 at 17:53:45 PDT, seller added the following information: The reserve price has been meet and the car will be sold to the highest bidder (auction no longer has a "Buy It Now" price)
