Vehicle Detail
This is a final-year edition of the legendary 124-bodied E-Class Mercedes Benz four-place convertible. This beautiful car was designed and built to the highest standards, with world-class safety and comfort features. It cost more than $70,000 new -- which, with inflation, translates to more than $100,000 in today's money. As the final year car this one features the renowned 3.2 liter engine that would anchor Mercedes into the 2000s, brilliant build quality and the legendary Mercedes design that ensure it is a true collector item. It is also in a very desirable color combination, dark pewter metallic (almost black) with lighter pewter lower cladding and light grey leather inside, balanced by a black cloth top. The last few years of the 124 series, Mercedes revised the headlamps, turn signals and tail lights and these subtle changes improved an already classic design even as they made it more contemporary. This car was owned for a dozen years and more than 100,000 miles by a friend of mine, a military officer. She kept the car in top condition, and spared no money to keep it beautiful. She drove the car many miles but always garaged it and had it serviced by the book. This car has indeed gone 196,000 miles and they have been well-kept miles. The car has a brilliantly straight body. The paint is so far as I can tell all original, and it is shiny, and there are barely even any paint chips. There are some bumper scuffs and an inch long chip out of the front bumper cover, but that's the worst of it on the exterior! The paint still reflects strongly -- look at the trees reflected on the hood! The lights are sharp and clear. The top is serviceable and does not leak at all, though it is showing some age wear on its outer surface. It goes up and down well, its complex mechanisms working smoothly. When you hit the power convertible top button, the cover in the back raises and the top pulls itself together and then hides away, compeletely covered. It does not eliminate trunk space when down. The power top is itself an amazing piece of technology. And then, for another impressive touch, there are power "headrests" that can be raised for the back seat to maximize safety for rear seat passengers. Again this car has been garaged and thereby well preserved. The interior is in excellent overall shape. There are a few tears in the leather on the driver seat bottom as shown, but that aside all looks very nice, and these seats are still super comfortable and supportive. The wood is also in very good shape; there are a few cracks in the varnish on the parts that get the most exposure, but fewer than average and the wood is simply a lovely accent to the car. The carpets are good, and while the floor mats show their age they are still serviceable. Mechanically this car is super strong and runs and drives like a much lower-mileage car. Repairs on the car have included replacing the wiper motor, replacing the fuel sending unit, and the fuel tank was replaced. One notorious issue with these cars is the reverse bands, the part of the transmission that puts the car in reverse. My friend noticed this acting up on her car. I freshened the transmission fluid and the symptoms decreased. Reverse works, albeit it benefits from patience, and at some point the next owner will probably want to attend to those bands. All the forward gears feel great and strong to me. All other mechanicals seem to be in great shape. The car rides nice and smoothly. And it's quiet too -- other vintage Mercedes I have owned have had their share of squeaks and rattles, but this one for all its miles is super solid. All of the options and elements of this car are present and working, with the exception of the driver's power seat forward and back. The motor is good, since the setting buttons can be overridden with the "1" and "2" setting buttons. Most drivers will be fine with things as they are, though a taller driver will want to get this fixed. Also the radio volume button is finicky, though it can be convinced to cooperate. This stereo has both a tape player, and a multi-CD changer in the trunk, and both are functional! It's an audiophile's little paradise. I've listed all flaws of which I am aware. These are very few issues for a 196,000-mile, 18 year-old classic automobile. The condition of this car is a tribute to both Mercedes design, and the owner's good and diligent care for the car. The car of course has a clean CarFax that I am happy to share. I am confident that this car's charms will be apparent to any fan of the model, so I am going to list it here at no reserve. Please ask any questions and I will get back to you as soon as possible. If you are local, come by for a test drive! If you are further away, no worries, I'm in a great location, near Washington DC and three major airports (DCA, IAD and BWI). Fly in, see the sights, and drive your new Mercedes convertible home! Or I will be glad to meet and work with a shipper if you send one. I'd like a $500 deposit by PayPal, and the remaining payment within a week. I will mail the title as soon as payment has cleared, if desired. Thanks for looking at this auction! Best of luck here or with whatever collector car charms you and follows you home. On Mar-03-13 at 06:31:10 PST, seller added the following information: Update about the reverse situation I mentioned: Since adding transmission fluid the reverse gear has worked much better. However, some of the fluid I added leaked out. I have not had time to figure it out but there is a leak in that system. Hopefully just a hose or connection that will be simple to repair. The good news is, nothing else has leaked at all from this car on my garage floor. It is tight and well maintained. Thanks for your interest in this great Mercedes!
