Vehicle Detail
This ad is for a 1978 Mercedes 240D diesel automatic. The car is freshly repainted in the factory color of Colorado Beige. Just last year, the body was completely redone, with new floor on the passenger side, and repaired rocker panels (both of which were repaired with actual metal). The paint is excellent, and is quite smooth. The interior is two-tone with Palomino seats and Tobacco door panels, an unusual but factory combination. The car is quite complete and original for its age. Though it's a bit of a cliche, these Mercedes diesel engines have an incredible reputation for durability, and so this car could be considered young at just under 150K miles. I have owned the car since 2006, and have replaced a lot of parts. Since I've owned the car, the following have been replaced: -New glow plugs -New valve cover gasket -New engine mounts (2) -New transmission mount -New front control arms and bushings -New front right outer wheel bearing -New front sway bar bushings -New rear sway bar links -New Sachs shock absorbers (4) -New alternator belt -New shifter bushings -Completely new brake fluid And in approximately the last year, the following have been replaced: -New starter -New Napa Legend battery -New Glow plug on the #4 cylinder -New inner and outer Timkin wheel bearings -New window sweep for driver's side front door -New trunk seal The car does have a few issues that should be sorted out. The air conditioning is not currently working. To save on fuel, I removed the belt from the compressor. The speedometer reads a bit fast. In cold temperatures, the speedometer can make a whirring noise. I believe that either the speedometer needs to be rebuilt, or it could be as simple as a worn cable. The cruise control nor the power locks work, which I think is due to leaks in the vacuum system. The injectors "nail" when the car is cold. The performance and economy could be improved with a new set. The fuel gauge doesn't read below about a third of a tank. The driver's side seat needs to be redone as the upper and lower covers have holes in them, and the lower spring needs to be replaced as the seat cushion leans to one side. It also needs to be refilled with stuffing. The passenger side seat is in quite reasonable condition, but it also need to be restuffed, as the seat back has come unstiched at the bottom. The transmission slips a little, but only when shifting. Once each gear is engaged, there is no slipping. The radio has trouble picking up radio stations. I think it may need a new antenna. The blower motor works almost every time, but sometimes won't turn on. I think there is a "flat spot" on the motor. Rear window defroster doesn't work. There is a fault with the glow plug circuit - it is currently hot wired and has been ever since I got the car, and the car starts fine. However, the car is very drivable as-is. All of the exterior lights work. The clock keeps perfect time, and the temperature gauge works fine. The car has excellent heat. The radio plays tapes great. The radio also has a auxiliary input, which can play a CD transport or an iPod. The body is in excellent shape. Overall, this car is a rather decent daily driver in a delightful color. There is no reason that this car couldn't be driven home.
