CONDITION REPORT
I have had a lot of trucks roll through my life, and those of you know me, and follow my listings, know that I am a 100% certifiable TRUCK NUT!
When I saw this truck for the first time, I was blown away at how such a rare example of a factory stake body could be restored so nicely, when they seldom do.
The truck was a labor of love for the prior owner, who got the truck, and the story of its history, from his Uncle.
The original title copy shows the truck was first purchased by the Hickory City Schools in Hickory, NC, back on Sept. 30th of 1955.
The truck remained with the school, and saw regular utility use up until the mid 70's, when it was retired to indoor storage prior to being purchased by the previous owners Uncle at a County School Board sale.
The truck was still operational, and was driven and enjoyed for twenty odd years until personal issues caused the truck to be parked and stored yet again.
The last owner purchased the truck from his Uncle in 2000, and brought it down to Florida to make it "as-new" again, and create a reliable show truck that could be driven and enjoyed again.
The truck was completely disassembled, down to the last nut, washer, wood slat, and wire, and everything that could be cleaned, serviced, renewed, and reused on the truck was set aside.
The engine had seen the end of its journey, and could not be rebuilt with the level of reliability needed, so it was scrapped, and a 235ci in-line Chevrolet 6-cylinder was sourced, stripped, and rebuilt from the internals out to go inside the truck.
This 235.5ci OHV six puts out 112hp and 200 ft lbs of Torque. It has been dressed with a couple of chrome items for appearance, and runs so well you would swear it was 1953 all over again.
The truck requires just a light choke when cold, and none at temprature, to start. Just blip the throttle once, push down on the start pedal, and it comes to life instantly with that lovely Singer Sewing Machine sound!
Idle is clean and smooth, and the truck does not appear to have any leaks or issues after sitting in the same spot of our shop for over two days.
The 4-speed manual transmission, gearbox, and rear end of the truck were all completely torn down, cleaned, rebuilt, and refurbished to function as good as new.
It snicks into gear easily, and the trucks clutch actuates perfectly to help you select which gear you are looking for.
Take up is smooth and chatter free, and the granny first gear is so strong you could probably pull down a star if you had long enough cable!
At speed, the truck cruises right along with no issues, and is really happy in that 45-55mph sweet spot. It is a great truck for local and in-town use, and would require a rear gear ratio change if you wanted to drive it regularly on the interstate.
LMC, Brothers, Mar-K, and other companies were sourced for any OEM or replacement parts that were needed, and the receipts folder included with the truck has most of them in it!
The chassis was completely stripped, media blasted, and prepped for a new coat of black paint.
All of the suspension components, springs, wheel cylinders, steering parts, and other underside pieces are all either new, or fully reburbished original parts.
The chassis is clean, painted, and finished out like stock, and would need only a detail to make it look even better than it already does. It shows light oxidation on some of the metal, but it simply scrubs off with a brush. We have not detailed the truck, so when you do, 85% of it should come off.
The 4-wheel drum brake system on the truck was refurbished from front to back, and carefully adjusted to stop the truck with minimal fade, wander, pulling, or drama.
Wheels are factory steel rims, painted creme beige, and have chrome trim rings and center caps on them. The rims show light markings on the outside edges from mounting the tires, and the chrome units look like new with no damage.
Tires up front are Futura Scrambler LT sized LT245/75R16. They are clean, damage free, and have just over 4,100 miles on them.
In back, a set of Futura Enforcer M/T tires was installed, size LT245/75R16 as well. These are mud and snow style tires that are pre-drilled for lugs for farm and field use. The lugs are not included, and none were ever installed, but it was a nod to how they used to set them up in the old days!
Rear tires also have just over 4,100 miles on them since new, and show damage and issue free.
The wood on the bed of the truck was completely removed and replaced with custom cut wood in the exact size and style as the truck originally had.
The wood was treated before being installed, and still shows wonderfully, with no dry-rot, damage, or issues of any kind evident.
All of the slats were new, as are the joining brackets, and they are all made of galvanized steel that has the normal patina you would expect.The prior owner painted them black, then realized that galvanized steel doesn't hold paint very well, so there are still a couple spots of black paint on them!
All of the door handles, exterior trim, brightwork, headlight rings, and surrounds were replaced with OEM new parts. The fuel filler cap is older, and shows light patina, as do the 3800 emblems on the sides of the truck.
All lighting from and back is fully functional, and the trucks entire electrical system was completely replaced with all new components during the restoration. This includes wiring, fuse panel, connectors, and wraps.
Glass on the truck is in exceptional condition, and has no chips, cracks, or damage. The vent windows show light laminate issues on the edges, as does a few millimeters on the edge of the rear window, and that is about the only issue.
Windows roll up and down with ease on all new fuzzies, and the doors and windows seal tightly thanks to all new weatherstripping and mouldings.
The truck was painted black in a high-quality two stage PPG finish that looks wonderful, and really helps show the clean lines of the original body.
The photos of the truck prior to resoration show that it was a remarkably clean, solid, and rot free North Carolina pickup to start with, so making it look as good as it does now was not too hard!
The body is all original steel, and there are no signs of bondo or patch panels, chickenwire, or any other horror story repairs having been done on the truck. In fact, a 4"x 4" felt covered magnet sticks to EVERY steel surface on the truck easily!
The paint is still glossy, slick, and wet looking, and shows very little signs that it has just over 4,100 miles on it. There are a few tiny stone chips and marks, a hairline scuff or two, a small pair of stains on the right front fender top, and other normal use markings you would expect on any vehicle, but the only real mark worth mentioning in any detail is a light clear coat bubbling on each side of the hood center strip. Not anything that can't be easily addressed, but it is the only real issue with the paint to point out in detail.
The creme beige bumper and grill are in very good condition, and show miniscule, if any, marks from normal use.
Overall, the exterior of the truck shows a solid 8.5 out of 10, and is really only a detail away from being a 9. It is a fantastic looking truck, and will have the cell phone cameras flashing to get a photo everywhere you drive it!
Open the doors, and you are greeted by a fully finished interior that looks fantastic from every angle!
The entire cab interior was painted in correct bronze finish, and the paint still looks fantastic. There are a couple of marks from having people get in and out and drive it for 4,100 miles, but nothing bad. The worst is on the drivers side seat rail, where boots have marred the paint in a couple spots. It is detailed in the photos below.
All new interior panels for the doors and headliner were sourced from LMC and installed, and they show very well, with only light signs of age evident.
Dash is clean and shows great, and all of the gauges are new in the cluster. These include FUEL, OIL, TEMP, and BATTERY. The only non-functional gauge is the fuel level, and there is a NEW GAUGE included but not installed in this auction.
Rubber floor mat is in very good, undamaged condition.
Gas, brake, E-Brake, and starter pedal rubber covers are in very good, damage free condition.
An "EVERLASTING" vacuum assist turn signal control is mounted on the factory original column, and it looks and works fantastic!
Factory vacuum operated wipers work as they should.
The steering wheel is original to the truck, and is showing cracks where the spokes meet the center cap. It was retained for nostalgia, but you can buy an new one if you feel the need to replace it.
The factory installed deluxe heat and defrost unit functions as it should, and is in great looking condition.
The ashtray opens and closes easily, and has been used at some point in the trucks almost 60 years, but not anytime recently! No smoke odor, and no other odors for that matter.
Glove box opens and closes easily, and the cardboard lining is in exceptional condition.
The seat is a factory original frame that has been refurbished, with a new seat spring/padding unit, and new cover. It looks and feels wonderful, with no tears, seam pulls, damage, or issues.
The emergency brake works as it should, and the cowl vent control arm works as it should as well.
Overall, this is a fantastic looking truck that would be just as happy in a car show as it would hauling produce to a local farmers market!
I have personally driven the truck over 50 miles, and found it to be an absolute blast to operate. It gets more pictures taken of it than an A-List celebrity at a nightclub, and seems to be about as relieable as a Swiss watch during my tenure with it.
The truck is sold with three boxes of spare parts, and I have shown the boxes in the photos below.
