Normal 0 I AM SELLING MY 1982 HONDA CBX WITH ONLY 39,000 ORIGINAL MILES ( THAT’S ONLY 1,300 MILES/YEAR) I HAVE HAD A FAIRLY LARGE MOTORCYCLE COLLECTION AND OVER THIS PAST 2 YEAR PERIOD HAD DECIDED TO SELL THEM ALL AND KEEP ONLY MY 3 FAVORITE ONES TO RIDE MYSELF. HOWEVER AS I APPROACH THE AGE OF 70 I HAVE DECIDED TO TRIM IT DOWN TO JUST MY WIFE'S AND MY GOLDWING, SO THE TWO I’M GOING TO SELL ARE THIS CBX AND AN ORIGINAL BLUE/GREEN 1975 GL1000. FIRST LET ME TELL YOU IF YOU ARE NOT FAMILIAR WITH ALL 4 YEARS OF CBX PRODUCTION, THE FIRST AND FASTEST (BARELY HAS 5 HP MORE) AND IS LIGHTEST, WAS THE 1979. I OWNED THE FIRST ONE IN AMERICA (SPRING 1978) AND I OWNED TWO MORE 1979’S SOLD IN THE COLLECTION, BUT THE 1981/82’s WERE IN MY OPINION THE VERY BEST, HERE’S WHY: ‘79’s AND ‘80’s HAD A DIFFERENT DESIGN CLUTCH BASKET AND AFTER A SHORT WHILE THEY DEVELOPED A “RATTLE” THAT DROVE ME NUTS. IT IS NOT FIXABLE AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED. 1981-82’s CHANGED THE BASKET DESIGN AND CURED THE PROBLEM. PERIOD! THEN THE ISSUE OF A NYLON SWINGARM BUSHING THAT WORE QUICKLY AND CAUSED PLAY IN THE SWINGARM NOT PARTICULARLY DESIRED FOR CORNERING. NOT TOO GOOD FOR STRAIGHT EITHER. 1981-1982’s USED HONDA’S NEW “PRO-LINK” ALUMINUM SWINGARM WITH GREASABLE METAL ROLLER BEARINGS. MINOR ENGINE TUNING REDUCED THE PEAK HORSEPOWER BY ABOUT 3-5 HP BUT INCREASED SLIGHTLY THE MID-RANGE TORQUE WHICH IS MORE DESIRABLE (LINEAR) ON SPORT-TOURING MODELS AS THAT WAS THE WAY HONDA MARKETED THE NEW CBX’s. ALSO THE LAST TWO YEARS PRODUCTION CAME WITH LARGER AND MORE POWERFUL VENTED FRONT DISC BRAKES, A FACTORY INSTALLED UPPER AND LOWER FAIRING AND QUICKLY DETACHABLE REAR BAGS. ONE KEY FITS EVERYTHING, LOCKABLE FUEL CAP & FAIRING COMPARTMENT (NEW IN ’81-’82), IGNITION, HELMET LOCKS AND REAR LUGGAGE, VERY CONVENIENT FOR THOSE TRIPS TO HOME DEPOT, ETC. FACTORY INSTALLED ENGINE GUARDS ALSO REDESIGNED SEAT AND FUEL TANK AND PASSENGER GRAB BAR/HANDLE. FRONT AND REAR SUSPENSION IS ADJUSTABLE VIA AIR SHOCKS AND REAR ADJUSTABLE HYDRAULIC DAMPENING.I ADDED A PINGEL HIGH FLOW FUEL SELECTOR VALVE. (REBUILDABLE) HONDALINE OPTIONAL QUARTZ ELECTRIC CLOCK IN FAIRING KEEPS PERFECT TIME.I WILL INCLUDE FACTORY SERVICE MANUAL AND VERY GOOD HONDA CBX GOLD PORTFOLIO BOOK PUB. IN UK IN PRISTINE CONDITION. HERE ARE MAINTENANCE ITEMS PERFORMED IN THE PAST 3 ½ YEARS I’VE OWNED IT:NEW EXACT REPLICA SEAT COVER 3 YRS AGO NEW BRIDGESTONE F11 SPITFIRE SPORT/TOURING TIRES FRT/REAR. 90% OF NEW VISTA FRICTION CRUISE CONTROL INSTALLED ALONG WITH A SET OF RANDAKK’S “AMAZING GRIPS” (REALLY) HONEST THE BEST. REBUILD BOTH FRONT BRAKE CYLINDERS W/NEW PISTONS, SEALS AND DUST COVERS AND NEW BRAKE PADS AND HERE’S A BIGGY; A WEAK SPOT ON THIS ENGINE (ALL CBX's) IS THE “B” TIMING CHAIN ADJUSTER (FRONT) (THERE ARE TWO ONE IN REAR, “A”) NOT WEAK ANYMORE! PROBLEM IS THE BOLT AND LOCK NUT ARE STEEL AND IT IS THREADED INTO AN ALUMINUM BOSS. (DUH) GUESS WHAT HAPPENS AFTER VERY MANY TIMING CHAIN ADJUSTMENTS? IT ISN’T PRETTY. THERE ARE A COUPLE OF REMEDIES AND I CHOSE THE MORE EXPENSIVE BUT GIVEN THE COMPLEXITY I DIDN’T WANT TO HELI-COIL IT SO BOUGHT A CUSTOM KIT AND INSTALLED A STEEL INSERT CALLED A “TIME-SERT”. ONE HECK OF A JOB AND I AM HAPPY TO SHARE THE WHOLE PROCESS WITH YOU IN PERSON. WHILE APART DID THE EXPENSIVE AND LABOR INTENSIVE JOB OF ADJUSTING THE VALVES WHICH IS REALLY ORDERING AND CHANGING THE SHIMS TO GET THE CORRECT VALVE LASH (CLEARANCE) RUN SHEET INCLUDED W/SALE. OF COURSE I USED NEW GASKETS AND HARDWARE WHERE NECESSARY FOLLOWED BUY NEW SPARK PLUGS AND OIL AND FILTER CHANGE AGAIN. ASIDE FROM THIRTY YEARS OF MINOR “PATINA” THIS MOTORCYCLE LOOKS AND RUNS FANTASTIC. THE CARBS ARE CLEAN AND SYNCRONIZED AND PERFORM FLAWLESSLY IN FACT THE BEST I’VE SEEN.THERE ARE NO BROKEN OR REPAIRED PLASTIC "TITS" ON EITHER SIDE COVER I HAVE POINTED OUT THE PAINT SCRATCHES IN PICTURES BUT TWO THINGS I FORGOT WERE A BROKEN PLASTIC "HOOK" ON ONE OF THE LUGGAGE BAGS (YOU WOULD NOT KNOW IT AS DOESN'T SHOW WITHOUT REMOVING THE BAG AND DOES NOT AFFECT THE OPERATION OF IT) AND THE BLUE PINSTRIPES ON THE TANK ARE GETTING THIN BUT ARE AVAILABLE ONLINE. THESE ARE NOT DEAL KILLERS BUT I SELL TO FOLKS ALL OVER THE WORLD AND I DON'T WANT ANY DISAPPOINTMENTS PLEASE CHECK MY FEEDBACK AT 100%. 100% IS PRETTY GOOD. IT'S NOT NEW OR A SHOW BIKE BUT A VERY NICE DRIVER AND I MEAN AN EVERYDAY DRIVER AND CAN GET NEARLY 50 MPG IF YOU CAN RESIST TEMPTATION WHICH EVEN AT MY AGE IS DIFFICULT. IT NEEDS NOTHING, FLY TO BRANSON AND RIDE IT HOME ANYWHERE. PICTURES TELL THE STORY AND I HAVE POINTED OUT THE COSMETIC FLAWS MOSTLY FROM BEING PARKED IN THE SHOP/GARAGE WITH THE LUGGAGE REMOVED AND GETTING KNOCKED AROUND SOME.
