The E55 has been smoking Z06’s and Lambo’s for 10 years and the new ZR1 wasn’t even conceived. E55 has dominated the world of luxury cars for 10 years, so it picks fights with supercars. The mere fact a car over 10 years old has no problem going head to head with the best. The E55 is a 4000 pound 4 door luxury sedan and it is? more laughable that the new CTS-V stole the supercharged platform from Mercedes, because none of their earlier models could touch it. The E55 is truly a remarkable machine.
Google "E55 Bank Vault Reliability" and you will get your answer. The E55 M113 engine that is basically the SLR McLaren engine equivalent minus some intercoolers and cams is Mercedes best engine, hands down. These AMG cars are hand built with forged internals, and transmissions that shift in 65 to 100 milliseconds. The transmission is power rated up to 1000hp from the factory, and can be seen in a Porsche Twin Turbo as well as a SL65 Black series. I have actually never read or heard of one of these tranny’s failing, and that’s an astonishing feat in itself. I did about a year of research before I could even find an E55. They are not as common as the CTS-V and M5s. I have been fortunate to own many high line vehicles and I can say without a shadow of a doubt, the E55 is one of the best cars built. In comparison The E39 M5 I had previous blew clutches all the time, the engine didn't have the same level of engineering. The Vanos system failed on the car., lost compression etc. I even had the E60 M5 shortly and thought the Squirrel shifting SMG transmission with 11 shift points was one of the worst cars I have ever owned. It had a Vanos oil line leak within the first 5k miles. It's so strange how they have even compared the M5 to the E55 for years. The SMG in the E60 is a joke. That’s why a 03 E55 will walk a 2012 M5. I don't think there is much especially 7 years ago that could do this. The E55 has been handing everyone their ass for 7 years. The E55 wagon makes mince meat of Audi's precious R8. Car and driver did an article of the station wagon pulling 4.0 second flat 0-60. Mercedes had to seriously redo the transmission from the 07 E63 so that it wouldn't be a half of a second slower than the E55 in 2010. I personally think the 6.2 engine was a huge mistake by Mercedes. I understand they wanted to prove that their V8 NA could produce the same amount of HP as BMWs V10. Anyways this engine will go down in history as one of the best in the world. Even the new E63’s are going back to the E55 platform with the M157, a 5.5-litre V8 with direct fuel injection and twin turbochargers. The E55 was and still is the best engine Mercedes ever made. That’s why the G55 had it all the way up to 2012.
The Pistons are forged, but they aren't maybe to the level of what an SLR has. Pistons can be forged in different ways with all kinds of alloys or metals made to handle different compression ratios. The pistons are made of a special, extremely temperature and pressure resistant material. The connecting rods are forged and their bearings made of extremely durable materials. The Supercharger has Teflon-coated aluminum shafts. I have SLR cams in my E55. They share the same engine block. They are not completely identical, but I can use the injectors, cams, and intercoolers if I wish. To me having a similar engine from a $600,000.00 Supercar in a sedan is pretty impressive, is it not? The reliability is proven with the E55. I have yet to hear of a Tranni failure? That’s incredibly impressive considering Tranni’s almost always fail at some point. Like I said just because it is Aluminum doesn’t mean it’s going to fail. The only engines I have heard of failing was 2 and both of those cars were improperly aggressively tuned at LET and EuroCharge. I have witnessed several High 100,000 mile plus 03’s running at the track in the High 10’s low 11’s with just bolt ons and not having an issue. I don’t know how you can compare a Range Rover to a 03/04 E55? The only issue the early w211’s had was Airmatic suspension failures. The Engines and the Tranni’s are bulletproof. I have been running mine with nearly 750 hp for a couple years and love spanking pretty much anything in its class or above. I owned the CLS63 for a brief time, and loved the sound of the engine, but when it came to the 55 it was no comparison. No need to argue this, it is a proven fact the E55 engine is a superior masterpiece. Once the E55's are modified they are on another planet.
In regards to the newer 7G-Tronic is limited to 542 lb-ft, not enough to handle the torque from the supercharged V8. The newer 7 speeds have great acceleration, but cannot handle near the level of Torque. I am curious to see how they will fare with high miles on them. It’s a proven fact of the reliability of the E55 engine. Everyone knows AMG phased out both the naturally aspirated and supercharged 5.4 L engines in favor of the new M156 V8 which was paired with 7G-Tronic. A lot of people were disappointed because the M156 produces less torque than the supercharged M155. The ceiling cannot be lifted on modding a NA engine vs. a blown one. I love cars, and I am not a fan boy, but a fan of AMG.
The E55 When fully engaged, the supercharger compresses intake air an additional 13.1 pounds per square inch, almost a full bar over atmospheric pressure. These cars have no problem running 18 pounds. I know of some in Germany running 800hp all day long with no problems. So your point is? Few cars can match the E55's sheer technological density, most of which is so thoroughly integrated as to be invisible and, perhaps, unappreciated. What you cannot help but appreciate is the endless well of power that this car has. That's why I love this car. $1000.00 non-refundable deposit
