Vehicle Detail
On April 2nd, 1959, Otto and Olga Pletti walked into East Bay Chevrolet in Albany, California looking for a new car. The salesman, Mr. D. Simpson showed them several new 1959 Chevrolets before settling on a brand new Bel Air 2dr. sedan. It was white with grey interior and had the 283 V8 with the powerglide transmission, power steering, tinted glass, full wheel covers, and defrost only (no heater). Otto and Olga enjoyed their new Chevrolet for the next 17 years and then passed it down to their grandson in 1976. Luckily, the grandson was old enough to appreciate the car when he got it. It could very well have been ruined, raced, or trashed in the era of the late 1970s. It was well-preserved, however, and the grandson took very good care of grandma's low mile 59 Chevy. The only modifications were new valve covers, air cleaner, carb and intake. I did get the old carb and intake but did not received the air cleaner and valve covers. He also put a stereo under the dash and some speakers in the package tray, but nothing was butchered. He did have the engine rebuilt sometime in the 1980s and it still runs excellent. The car got several paint touch ups over the years and there is still a scratch that has been brush touched up on the top of the passenger side fender, but it shows beautifully. The grandson kept the car for 37 years before finally selling it this Spring. The interior is amazing. It still has the old plastic covers on the seats and the original seats are in mint condition. It still has the original half carpet and half rubber mat that you never see anymore. It is intact, but the rubber part is getting pretty brittle. I added factory style floor mats to preserve the original rubber. Most cars on Ebay look much better in the pictures than they do in person. I have to be honest, I'm kind of disappointed in the interior pictures of this car. The interior is much better in person than it appears in the pictures. The body is just what you would expect from a low mile, one family owned, California car....Incredible. It shows no rust and is as dry and nice underneath as the day it was sold new. The chrome and stainless is as good as NOS. The aluminum trim and grill still have a nice shine and not cloudy at all. It still wears its original California black license plates with the original East Bay Chevrolet license surround. Also it has the ultra rare keychain license plate that was issued by the DMV when the car was registered. The original East bay Chevrolet key chain is also included. The documentation is pretty extensive on this car, also. I have the original owner's manual, Owner Protection plan book, original warranty papers, temporary license permit, and an issue of National Motorist magazine that was in the glove box from September of 1959. I am looking to buy a 1959 Impala convertible for myself. I will consider a project car to a restored car. Let me know what you have. Will gladly pay finders fees. I could go on and on about this car but it's just one of those cars that speaks for itself. Look at the pictures and decide if it is something that you need to own. It will be a long time before you see another one like this. I have set a very modest reserve on this car. You could not get an old rough 59 Bel Air for free and try to make it look like this car for twice the reserve. Please do not bid unless you intend to buy. Winning bidder must contact me within 24 hours of the auction end. Full payment must be received within 7 days of the auction close. NO EXCEPTIONS!! The car is available for viewing during the entire auction. I highly recommend potential bidders come inspect the car in person before bidding. Car is sold as is with no warranties expressed or implied.
