Vehicle Detail
1979 Honda CR125, modified to mimic the RC-125 Type II Honda that Marty Smith raced in the later parts of the 1976 AMA National Championship. To anyone who may have been watching/bidding on this bike last week, I apologize for ending the auction early. I had an issue with someone I thought was a buyer, but it turns out that the person was playing games and the issue has been resolved. I've also decided to change up the "buy it now" price, so if you want the bike, one click will get it for you. Good luck and please understand that I WILL NOT sell to anyone outside of the U.S. The bike is a 100% ground up restoration. It's not a "100 point" bike, but I never intended it to be. This one is for racing and therefore, shows some battle scars. The frame and swingarm were stripped and powder-coated to a bright red that matches the plastic almost perfectly. The stock 23" front wheel was swapped out for a 21" hoop. The rims are Sun brand from Buchanan's Wheels in California. The rims were originally bare aluminum and I had them anodized by a separate company, so that the color would be an exact match from front to rear. Spokes are 8 gauge stainless steel. To compensate for the steering angle when going from the 23" front wheel to the 21", I installed a set of 1982 CR250 forks, which are 2" longer than the stock '79 forks. The forks are also a bigger diameter and work much better than the wimpy stockers from 1979. The engine has been completely rebuilt one time since I finished the project. Yes, the bike was raced in local VMX events for one season, but it has also been well taken care of. She has some paint chipped off the engine in spots from being raced, but I can provide you with the info on the paint so the buyer can match the color, if they feel the need. The crank was rebuilt with a new con-rod and bearings by CrankWorks in Tempe, Arizona. The cylinder was re-plated with Nikasil (NOT chrome!) by U.S. Chrome in Wisconsin. With the Nikasil liner, any future rebuilds can use standard piston rings - not the "chrome only" rings you need with the stock set up. The piston and rings are Wiseco. Since rebuilding the top-end, the engine was broken in properly, and after that, has only 4 moto's on it (one hour max race time) to finish out the race season. The cylinder has a mild port job and for a 125 of this era, it's got a decent "mid-to-top" powerband. It pulls my 200 pounds around, no problem! As you can see, I left the cylinder bare of paint after the re-plating in the thought that it might help with the cooling. Also, it’s a must to run race gas in this engine or she’ll detonate and break a piston in no time. With 108 octane race gas, the top end should last like any typical 125 of this era. Cosmetics include the RC-style fuel tank and all new "replica" (not O.E.) plastics. It's the shiny stuff and looks great. It's got my race number on it, but you can always change that out with your own numbers. Exhaust pipe is an aftermarket Pro Form Racing cone pipe with an aluminum silencer. It looks great and works even better! The stock Kehin carburetor was replaced with a Mikuni and it works great. The intake manifold is a new “copy” of the original and has no cracks. It’s got a Uni Air Filter and Boyesen reeds. Jetting is set up for 1200’ elevation. The shocks are not the stockers. They were replaced with a set of Ohlins off a Husqvarna and were revalved and resprung to work with the CR frame. I included a few race photos just to show her in action. The black and white pic is Marty Smith's Type II from the 1976 Nationals, just so you can see the look I was going for. It's a great bike and I had a lot of fun (and some frustration) restoring her. Unfortunately, I just can't keep her. My loss will be someone's gain, for sure! The bike is located in Peoria, Arizona (NW of Phoenix). The bike is sold AS-IS and WHERE-IS and no warranty or guarantee is expressed nor implied. Purchaser must arrange ALL shipping and handling. I cannot crate or arrange transportation. If the buyer is within 100 miles of Phoenix, I may be able to meet half way with the bike. A $250 deposit from the winning bidder is expected via PayPal within 48 hours of the close of the auction, with the remaining balance due prior to, or at the time of, pick up. There is no title with this bike as it was assembled/refurbished from pieces, but I am working on getting a title, if that's important to you. I will provide a bill of sale. Please ask any and ALL questions prior to bidding! 10/6/12: I dropped the price to $2500.00 because I need to sell her. At this price, I WILL NOT be able to meet within 100 miles of Phoenix. If you want it, you'll have to make arrangements to pick it up at my place. Also, it will be sold with a bill of sale ONLY - no title. If you want a title, that will cost another $50.00. Thanks for looking!
