Vehicle Detail
Normal 0 false false false EN-US X-NONE X-NONE Up for grabs is my modified 1974 Mercedes Benz 450sl. The car is in good condition but is not original. The body is in good condition but the paint is at least 12 years old (I have had it for 8) and while it looks great at 5 to 10 ft when you get close up you can see its got swirls and chips. An hour with a finishing compound and a polisher would probably work wonders but I’m more mechanically inclined never worry about the bodywork. The seats have been replaced with more modern 2000 Jaguar XJ8 electric seats but I do still have the original seats. See the terms at the end. It comes with the hard top pictured and the soft top is a new canvas softop that is 2 years old and has been raised maybe 3 times in the 2 years. The car also has the windscreen behind the seats for when the top is off. The tires have 70% plus tread The engine has been replaced with a high compression European spec M116 3.5 liter V8 instead of the low compression M117 4.5 liter US spec V8. The engine has been rebuilt (about 10 to 15K miles ago) with new bearings, rings, timing gear, gaskets etc. The heads were refurbished with new valves and a 3 angle seat job. I modified the engine to run on a modern megasquirt fuel injection system instead of the original D jet fuel injection system. The megasquirt is controlled from a programmable fuel injection system which you can tune to suit your driving style using your lap top computer. I have a full set of pictures of the rebuild and will send copied if you want to see them. The ignition is currently running on Pertronix with a flamethrower coil but can be converted back to points ignition and the fuel injector trigger points are still in the original distributor. All of the transmission, differential and engine oils have been changed and there is a new filter in the transmission. The car will come with a new hengst oil filter and the oil needs to be changed in about 2000 miles. I use synthetic shell rotella 5w40. It was the first documented conversion of a R107 450sl Mercedes with djet on the megasquirt forum and the discussion can be seen here at http://www.msruns.com/viewtopic.php?f=106&t=22644 I also have my own website discussing the conversion and what I did and how I did it http://www.mercdjetmegasquirt.britautorepair.com/ the email on the website has been abandoned as I was getting too much spam so if you want to contact me send me your email through ebay. Mechanically the car is in great shape and everything works except the aircon which I removed but you can have it in a box and reinstall it if you want. It all worked when I removed it so with a regas it should work just fine. I just don’t use it and didn’t want the parasitic drag of the system. The most recent job I did was to replace both rear drive shafts (half shafts) and differential seals I have hundreds of photos of the work I have done on the car so if you want to see anything in particular please just ask. Here is the website for the rear axle work. You can also see the underbodyhttp://www.mercdjetmegasquirt.britautorepair.com/replacing_the_rear_axles.htm I made a video on the car which I posted to friends in the benz forums when I was thinking of selling the car to get an idea of worth, I realized I would not recover what was put into the car as it is no longer original but I intended keeping it for some time. Circumstances have changed and I need to sell it. It can be easily converted back to djet and the original seats etc can be reinstalled. The video can be seen on you tube before the car was cleaned out – it also shows the megasquirt running – normally you see nothing as once the program is loaded you unplug your laptop and don’t touch it. I have run it for the last 2 years without changing anything. Just ignore me burbling away on the video as i cannot figure out how to disable the sound! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8EaTGuSVrlE&list=UUhwiqhkHUCocI2vx02wBb0A&index=1&feature=plcpI have added some pictures of the engine rebuild and whilst the engine was out of the body I replaced all of the subframe mounting bushes, the steering bushes and idler arm bushings.5/15 I was asked this question and thought I had replied to the listing too but its not showing up soCan you tell me if there is any rust on the car? What kind of HP and torque do you think the engine is puting out and what kind of gas do you need to put in? Thankswhen I bought the car there was some rust in the rear dickie seat depressions, I cut them out and welded in 16 gauge sheet and then filled and rust proofed. The previous owner had done some work on the passenger side rear floor with a fiberglass overlay and seems to have done a good job so I left it alone. Other than that there are some small nicks and scratches on the bodywork that have surface rust on them but nothing structural. The 1973 M116 euro motor has 230 SAE @6500 rpm and 231.5 ft/lb @ 4200 rpm compression is actually 9.5:1 not 10:1 as I though and consumption is around 17mpg at 70mph for US gallons. This one gets around 19mpg and I probably beat the Hp and torque by 5 to 10% but I have never dyno'd the car. the same M117 in the US spec 450sl has 230 hp SAE @5000 rpm and tha CA model 190 hp SAE @ 4750 the torque is 238.8 ft/lb @ 3000 and the CA model 232ft/lb. The CA model had extra smog stuff. the US model is 8:1 compression and MPG is between 13 and 15mpg at 70mph I run premium gas in the car I am starting the auction at $5000 and have no idea of how the bidding will go however the seats are worth $400 so if the auction hits $5500 I will include the original seats and if it hits $6000 I will include the original djet wiring harness and computer system and removed sensors (worth about $400 on ebay) the other original parts including the fuel injection points distributor are still on the car just not used.I require a $500 deposit through paypal as per ebay, the remainder is by bank cheque or cash in person. if by bank check it has to clear into my account before i will send the title or car. I can drive the car to a loading facility nearby for shipping otherwise its the buyers responsibility. I am happy to show the car to your mechanic or appraiser etc etc so long as you make an appointment in advance as i work pretty long hours. PLEASE ASK ALL QUESTIONS BEFORE YOU BID!
