Vehicle Detail
I traveled long and far on a Saturday morning after a sleepless night to see this little white bug. I knew many car nuts would be knocking on this door shortly, but somehow I had landed on the top of the heap. I was met by a kind and gentle lady who was 20 minutes late to our appointment and my heart was racing. There were other car nuts waiting in the wings and I tried to quick draw the money into her palm. She would have none of it and engaged me in a 30 minute history of the bug. In 1965 her and her husband moved to California and promptly made the purchase of the white beetle you see here. It had served them very well. So well they had it restored 15 years prior and then it just sat in the garage. It sat in the garage for many moons, alone with the bric-a-brac of flat tired bicycles, broken handled rakes, and lawn mowers they didn't work. She was tough cookie and raised the price rough 20% of our phone agreement. No worries, I called Tow Mario and hauled my prize home. True to form, we quickly knocked the dust off this bug. Fresh gas, a hot battery, and boom, we had ignition albeit a rough idle. We began to poor over the bug, noticing different things here and there. There was a shoddy repaint. The convertible top, although new, had the window installed upside down. It also appeared to have some deep wrinkles. There had been an accident and the front passenger inner fender had been hastily repaired. No matter. We went about our business of knocking off the dust and shinning the chrome. As soon as I could, I went up to my local vintage V-dub repair shop, The Bus Lab! They are very helpful and friendly and took a bit of time late on a Friday to help me diagnose the rough idle. The tune up parts look new and good so they suggested a valve adjustment. I have to agree that something needs to be done to smooth out this idle. It shifts gears fine. Holds a charge. The lights come on and I am very pleased with the buggy. It fits well here in Berkeley where aging hippies smile and reminisce of good times and concerts. If this one doesn't find a home with you, that's fine. It's home in Berkeley. I have nothing to verify that as a fact except the kindness of the previous owner.
