Vehicle Detail
Classic 1949 Ford F-4 Stake Body PickupThis is a no reserve auction. I bought this truck from a farmer in Virginia for about $3,000. After making the purchase on ebay, I flew to Virginia and drove the truck back home to Florida on dry rotted tires and thread bare wiring. The fact that I made it is a testament. At night fall on the first day of driving, I started having electrical problems and had a hugh backfire in the oil pan. I thought I had just blown up my $3,000. Luckily it was just a bad voltage regulator. Which as it turns out I was able to get replaced in a nearby town. Since then, I have invested about $50,000 in the restoration of this lovely beast. After the restoration I moved to Texas and found myself driving the truck across country again. The stares and conversations along the way were a lot of fun. Now, I find myself needing the money more than I need the toy. Most of the hard (read as expensive) restoration work has already been completed on this vehicle. However, there are still a few projects for those of you who like to tinker. The engine is a flat-head V-8 which I'm told is actually out of a '52 or '53. It has the original 4 speed manual transmission - unsynchronized (you have to double clutch). The only other non-original part that I can think of is the front fenders which we decided to replace with fiberglass units to "save" some money on the restoration. The 1500 miles are approximately how many miles I've put on it since the restoration - the odometer and speedometer do not work. Restoration work completed:Electrical - rewired with original equipment and converted to 12 voltEngine - overhauled and converted to run on unleadedTransmission - rebuiltSteering - added steering stabilizer to reduce the classic "bump" steeringSuspension - rebuilt springsBody - all body parts are original with the exception of the front fenders which were replaced with high strength fiberglass unitsFrame - replaced various nuts and bolts that attached the bed to the frameWheels & Tires - original split rims (decapitation devices) have been replaced with safe one peice unitsExhaust - exhaust manifolds were sleeved with brass due to cracks, replaced pipingInterior - headliner and interior panelsRestoration work needed:Bed & stake sides - replace wood/rebuildWindows - all windows are operational, but the wing vents are missing some hardware and don't lock closedGauges - need to be rebuilt/replaced, the speedometer is not operational and has been disconnectedPaint - there is a chip from when someone working on it closed the hood without the bumpers in place - they tried to hide it with a magic markerRunning Boards - had been restored, but have cracked on the edges where I think the metal got thinWipers - are the original vacuum operated wipers and should probably be upgraded to electricalWindshield - leaks in the rainI'm sure that I have missed a few details, but the truck is in really good condition and could be used on a daily basis. That being said it is over 60 years old and still need some TLC. I have posted additional pictures at http://f4restorationpics.shutterfly.com/ and http://f4pics.shutterfly.com/. Enjoy!
