Vehicle Detail
Meet Nearl 'I am a lineman for the county. And I drive the mainroad. Searching in the sun for another overload. I hear you singing in the wire. I can hear you thru the whine. And the Wichita Lineman, is still on the line.' Glenn Campbell 1968 On July 22, 1968, Nearl Boyd, a lineman for Public Service Co, went to Rosen Novak Ford on East Colfax, Denver Co. and paid $3129 (plus $17.25 D&H and $93.87 taxes) in cash for a brand new 1968 Ford Galaxie 500 with the Select Shift Cruise-O-Matic, 390 V-8 with power steering ($94.95) and power disc brakes ($66.77) MSRP $3786.71. 41 year old Nearl immediately started accessorizing with Mark IV Air Conditioning from Sears ($179.99), Cobra 40 channel CB Radio with 3 antennae, trickle charger, sun visor extenders and the windshield mounted floating compass. Nerl bought it new and he kept it new. January 14, 2010 I had occasion to bid a car for an estate, a car left by Nearl Boyd to his grandson, this very Galaxie with 46,075 miles. I was 14 years old when Nearl purchased the Galaxie, I grew up 7 blocks away from Rosen Novak Ford. Now, thanks to the grateful grandson, Nearl's Galaxie is mine. Nearl Boyd installed a street lamp in his alley that looked suspiciously like those monsters at City Park. The man had a grinder/tool sharpener hard wired to a post in his back yard. I tell you these things so that you too will know that God never made a better first owner than Nerl for this Galaxie. A trunk packed with boxes of Fram filters, (air, fuel, oil), cans of the good ozone busting freon, belts, plugs, spare CB antennae. (Nerl also had a formidable antennae constructed in his yard) The car now has 55,000 miles and it is time for Nearl's Galaxie 500 to go to a better home/museum. This car is, for me, too nice to use as daily driver, hence the decision to sell. Everything is original, the dented chrome on the front quarter is Nerl's work. The broken radio antennae is mine. I had the front seat inserts replaced, because the cloth was separating from the vinyl in the driver seat. In June 1993, Nearl purchased 4 new all season radials and these tires are still on the car. Some might worry that these 18 year old tires might need replacing, however the car had 40,900 miles when the tires were installed. They look and drive great and they only have 15000 miles on them. As you would expect, Nearl kept accurate maintenance records, with his major services performed at Rosen Novak and documented in the rear of the pristine 1968 Owner's Manual. There is a tattered window sticker, Bill of Sale, Buyer's Order, tire receipts, CB manual, and a nice collection of period maps. The car is mechanically sound and needs nothing. I have a recent service and checkout receipt (new rear brakes). I did not replace the dented chrome on the front right quarter or the antennae because I would not be able to say it is completely original. It is completely original. The Galaxie 500 is a wonderful driving car with good power, very quiet comfortable road car, great city cruiser, has good visibility and is nimble, easy to park. The air conditioning is nuclear, the trunk will hold 4 sets of clubs and all your gear; we will miss all the thumbs up we received with our Christmas wreath and red bows. 'And I need you more than want you. And I want you for all time. And the Wichita Lineman, Is still on the line' Don't just buy a car; invest in a legend.
