That valve cover was purchased used (Ebay!) and while it looked great, was warped and leaked badly once the motor was run. There seems to be a lot of interest in seeing that cover back on the motor, so it's headed to my machine shop to see if they can true it up. If successful, I'll include it with the car. If not, the new buyer has a fun, simple project to crinkle paint the original cover. 2) "Exhaust header needs paint!"-Header was painted dark grey hi-temp exhaust paint, which does not last. As explained in my description, close to 7,000 miles have been put on the motor since it's full re-build and this is what it looks like. It could be ceramic coated, or re-painted-you choose. 3) " Source of chrome bumpers?" They are from a 73' 2002 US that I had restored and re-chromed. OEM rear over-rider seam covers and new OEM rubber trim and new cad plated hardware all from Mobile Tradition 4) "Motor rebuild, top end only or full?" Full re-build was done. What does that mean? In this case it means block hot tanked and thoroughly cleaned. Crankshaft, connecting rods, pistons, bores, oil pump all measured and tolerances checked by machine shop. Original Mahle pistons were well within spec as were bores, crank, etc. Crank polished, bores honed, rods re-conditioned, etc. Full 5-angle valve job on head including ALL new valves, intake and exhaust, new upgraded valve guides, seals, new valve springs & keepers, original valve spring retainers kept. New billet Schrick 292 cam. All new good German crank & rod bearings & seals. New plastic timing/oil pump chain ramps, new timing/oil pump chains & sprockets. Distributor rebuilt and re-curved to Tii spec, converted to mechanical advance, vacuum advance chamber still attached but not used. 5) "Why using vacuum advance instead of a performance "Tii" distributor?" Some folks just have to much time on their hands! My engine builder is an ace at distributor re-building, re-curving, modifying and has one of those cool (huge) old-school distributor machines. He re-built, re-curved and modified my original distributor into a mechanical advance distributor. The old vacuum advance chamber is still attached but un-used. As you all know, tuning a motor is a delicate ballet between carbs, timing and distributor curves. My motor was tuned bringing all of these into alignment and the car runs incredibly strong and smooth. What else can be said? 6) "Rear Fog Light- what make? "It's a Hella vintage fog light, NOS. The back of it is chrome. I looked a long time for an NOS Hella lamp and finally found this one. It was not inexpensive! Some people like to hook these up as 3rd brake lights, some like to keep it as a true fog lamp, continuously lit during low visibility conditions. We couldn't decide how we wanted to use it so never hooked it up. We did, however, run a dedicated hot wire from the fuse panel through the cabin into the trunk so it's ready to go, either way. 7) "Why no dual Weber DCOE carbs?" Hey, I love that look, believe me! But it's overkill on all but most aggressive race motors. They end up being "gas pumpers" pumping un-used (expensive!) gas out the tail pipe unless a much hotter motor than I wanted has been built. I can already feel the flack I'm going to get on this, but it's my opinion and experience. I'm still getting 23-26 MPG @ 80-90mph on the freeway and good torque down low, so I'll take it! 7) Seat upholstery-"is it still original horse-hair and is it crunchy and broken down?" : Earlier 2002's had a basket weave pattern in the center of the seating area. I'm not sure when it changed, but I know 1975 & 1976 US seats had Comfort Seats, more fluffy with smooth but perforated vinyl. My seats have perforated vinyl in the center portion of the fronts and rear seats leading me to believe the upholstery was original. A noted BMW 2002 restorer today pointed out my seams did not look original. I pulled out my original BMW brochure for the year and confirmed he was correct. So, correction to my initial description: the seat upholstery while of the correct perforated vinyl, has been replace at one time and is not original. The padding in the front seats also doesn't have the tell-tale crunch of the horsehair-jute padding so I must assume that was replaced with foam padding. The seats are firm, correct in their support -which is very important to having a good driving experience. All of the recliners, sliders and front-tilting controls work perfectly, also important. Regarding the back seat, the upholstery matches the front seats so it too must have been replaced when the front was done. The padding in the rear seats is firm and supportive. Thanks for looking.
