Vehicle Detail

Rare opportunity to own perhaps the best muscle car of all time. Buick engineers went all out for a one year combination of a midsize equipped with a 455 cu inch monster motor that weighed in 150 lbs less than the Chevy and Dodge Hemi big blocks of the day. Rated at a laughable 350 hp for the non-Stage and 360 hp for the Stage One for insurance purposes, the 510 ft/lbs of torque gave more of a clue to the performance and potential of these motors. It was nicknamed the Hemi Killer and one car magazine reported it as "the fastest American production car we have ever tested." The combination of a wild paint job including black stripes, a hood tach, and spoilers for the unfailingly conservative Buick division, the very comfortable and well appointed interior, and the monster mill served up a very rare offering. With a production run of somewhere in the neighborhood of 678, there are perhaps 200 remaining. With the split between Saturn Yellow and Apollo White, Stage and non-Stage motors, 4 speed and TH400 automatics, AC and non AC one can get the idea of how rare this car is. They are very rarely for sale and I bought this one sight unseen 17 years ago. Most now are frame off restorations stuffed in garages and trailer queens for events and none available for under $100,000 and rapidly going up. This one is not that car as it would be a sin not to drive it. The car was repainted in 1987 in the original scheme and is very well preserved as can be seen in the photos. What cannot be seen is some imperfections in the roof and trunk lid that was the result of improper dry time between coats. It is unchanged during my ownership and in no way detracts from the appearance of the car but can be seen under close inspection. The carpeting, seating, headliner and door panels were either replaced or are original and in very good condition. Factory seat belts and optional shoulder harnesses are all there. The dash cluster and long console are show quality as I had all the gauge faces, along with the surrounds, bezels, and functional clock professionally restored by a noted expert. The factory AM/FM with optional rear speaker functions properly. All the dash gauges function even the high beam indicator, and it is equipped with the optional speed alert speedo. The dash pad which has the indentation and the original GSX emblem is in good condition with no tears but has some very small bumps. All lighting including the interior lighting even the ashtray all work. The factory tinted glass and rubber are in good condition. The exterior chrome is exceptional as is the grill which is correctly painted. Power steering and braking functioning perfectly. A/C also functioning properly and ice cold. This was a very highly optioned car from the factory with perhaps every option save power windows and the Stage 1 package. The drive-train is where the car really shines. I never planned on selling the car so I set it up like it should be. The motor was pulled and rebuilt in 1999 with the help and direction of Poston Enterprises who for 25 years were the most knowledgeable experts available for these engines. I believe they went out of business in 2009 and many of the parts may no longer be available. There is less than 500 miles on the set-up. .030 over bore and pistons Mild port and polish for heads with high strength valve springs Street/Track cam with mild lope but awesome mid-range ATI Nascar style harmonic balancer Lightweight Flex fan and aluminum pulleys Accel one-wire alternator Poston Aluminum S/Divider intake Holley 850cfm double pumper with perfect jetting True Ram air set-up through the front spoiler ( factory setup added very little benefit) Stinger Electronic high energy electronic ignition with high arc Accel wiring Large diameter headers flowing to a 4" stainless exhaust through two hugh Walker Ultraflows and 4" polished tips TH400 pulled, freshened, and a larger torque converter installed Original 3:42 Posi Idle quality is excellent with a slight lope and quite in normal operation but literally explodes when you put your foot into it. The sound and free revving nature is both exotic sounding and intoxicating. It is well in excess of 500hp with big block sound and power with the quick revving nature of a small block. Fascinating! Documentation includes confirmation form the GSX Historic Society as the 494th produced in 1970 and receipts and names of 2 previous owners. The serial number coincides with the range of #s that GSX's were produced. The Protecto-plate includes the Q-Q paint code which was Saturn yellow and GSX only. The original paint is yellow and in the door jams, trunk, and engine bay. The steering wheel and dash pad with the GSX emblem were GSX only. The rear spoiler weep holes along with the original bolts and pressed not drilled access for them in the trunk supports are GSX only. I believe the GSX Registry confirmed the car as an original non-Stage car at the Buick Nationals in 1998. I have never doubted the authenticity of the car during my ownership. The mileage shown on the odometer could be 104,000 or been reset when restoration was done. I have no way of knowing the actual. The engine block does not bear the stamp identifying it nor has it be re-stamped to fake it. This means that the block was either decked or replaced. This was quite common with the 1970 455s as they experienced oiling problems. The heads, transmission, and rear end are original. I have received many questions about returning it to stock. The engine is the same as many of the 455s of this era and would need an intake manifold, Rochester Q-jet, air cleaner assembly, alternator, valve covers, exhaust manifolds, exhaust, and front spoiler. These pieces are not exceptionally rare and the front spoiler is available as a virtually imperceptible repro for $140. I encourage your questions before bidding via email or by my cell 615-767-9410. Please no dreamers or persons just wanting to tell me what my car is or isn't. Personal inspection is encouraged and welcomed. The car is seriously for sale as I need capital for a new business venture. It is for sale locally and other avenues so the auction could end at any time. Therefore I encourage early bidding or your call. GOOD LUCK!!!
