tessarosa55 Store For you consideration, 1972 Datsun Z that I purchased from the original owner before I was diagnosed with bone cancer. I am selling it because I was diagnosed with multiple myeloma and after 20 rounds of chemotherapy I am too weak to continue restoring this beautiful car. It is my hope that somebody out there will buy it and finish restoring it. Everything I am going to tell you is the straight scoop, so here we go. The car has 350,000 miles on the body, which for an almost 40 year-old car is less than 10,000 mile per year. If the mileage seems like a lot, think about it: I could just lie and say, oh, just turned 100,000..Well, I think you see my point. It did not stop me from buying the car, because I wanted an accident-free car to restore. The car is a real head turner, and every time I stop for gas, everyone wants to know all about it, or let their kids set in it, pretty cool. It has always been serviced properly, and it shows. The Doors, Hood, Hatchback & all body seams line up beautifully, the doors open and close solid like they should, and the car is in very good condition overall. The engine, we (I say we because the owner & I discuss the car all the time) has about 80,000. It is the L-28 motor with An N-42 head, the best possible combination. It has electronic ignition, headers, and performance springs all around, from Motorsport Auto in Orange, Ca, which are stiffer and lower the car about 3/4 of an inch. The car has minimal rust on it because when he purchased it on July 25th, 1972, he had the good sense to pay $35.00 to have it undercoated. This on a car that he paid $4963.35 for out the door. It saved the car's life, as it kept the under-body free from rust. a good deal, I would say. Since the only thing you as a potential buyer can go by are the photos, I have included 25 here, and about 40 more online at Photo bucket. I think the undercarriage photos are the single most important set on a Z. Because of the unibody construction, they can tell you if the car has serious rust, ever been in an accident, which this car has not, and with a sports car like this Z, it is a must because any accident has the potential to affect the handling and suspension setup of the car. Although I did not have the strength to detail the undercarriage, you can see that the car has never had an accident, and any rust is confined to the exhaust system and suspension components which is surface rust and can treated by sanding and the use of a good rust-preventative paint. As for the rest of the car, the only areas that have surface rust are the door jambs & the area behind the battery. These areas can be sanded and sprayed with rust preventative paint, but it is confined to the surface. The only two areas where real rust is present are two small patches on the pass-thru on the hatchback and the driver's side fender-well outside lip, which has about a two inch long area, & the rear left-hand side of the bumper, where the chrome is flaking off. The reason I am going into such detail about rust is it can be very common on these cars, and if I were buying it, I would want someone to be honest with me. Look at the photos and ask me questions. As for the rest of the car, it has the original paint, which I had detailed over the course of two days and it did come out very nicely. The hood of the car is faded, and the driver's side door paint has a faded area as well. The whole idea of selling the car with original paint is when you do decide to repaint it, you won't have to scrape off a poor quality paint job somebody had done just to sell the car. Why bother?. Now to the good stuff. The car runs very well, was tuned just a few months back, including having the carbs set properly. The car has just been serviced, using Mobil 1, which is all it has ever had, and at the same time I had the differential & transmission mounts replaced. The front brakes have recently been done as well. The car starts quickly, settles into a 600 rpm idle, and is fast. If you haven't driven a really fast car for a while, you are in for a treat! On top of that it handles great, and the five-speed transmission shifts smoothly It is a blast to drive, and it begs you to go fast, and prefers twisty roads so it can show off the indpendant rear suspension. It rides on Goodyear Eagle GT II tires, 205/70R/14, with approximately 80% of tread left. It needs interior work, so it has seat covers for the time being. I had a dash cap installed, the A/C, is there but not working. Same for the dash clock. The rear deck area behind the seats is clean & waxed, the two little boxes with latches on them that hold the unused jack & lug wrench, look new. Same with the spare tire which is another alloy wheel, Ansens, I believe. These wheels were so popular in the seventies, that the original owner had to almost fight the guy at the tire store to sell him a fifth one, because it broke up a set of four. Before you buy it you can check out the prices for the interior an any else you want for a Z at Blackdragon, or Motorsports in Orange, CA. You can check them out on the web. The car comes with the original 240 Z motor sitting on a engine stand, & a four-speed transmission, the original Hitachi radio, with all original knobs, fuses and instruction booklet, (I have never plugged it in, so I cannot say if it works or not) All of the original repair manuals, including a factory style 1972 service manual. It also comes with new in-box clutch slave & master cylinders, new weatherstripping for the hatchback, spare alternator & voltage regulator, the original smog equipment including the air pump, for the 240 Z motor, which as the original wrote to me last week, is made of "unobtainium" especially the air pump. You also get a spare fuel pump, 2 distributor caps, points, condenser & rotor set, spare used master cylinder, spare fuse block, spare fanbelts, (2). Original fan, since the car now uses a high capacity electronic fan to cool the car, a new spare speedometer cable, original springs, New Costco battery, in case you have to replace it I chose a Costco because they are everywhere. it also is pre-wired for a battery tender, which is also included, so you can just plug it in at the battery if you go on vacation, and it will keep the battery charged. I also have another box of hoses and other parts, mostly all new in bags, and the original window sticker. The car also comes with 2 keyblanks, with "Datsun" stamped on them, (try getting those at your local Nissan dealer) as well as a set of daily driver keys. Towards the end of the auction, I will also include something to finish off the restoration, also original, and just about impossible to get. As far as the body on the car, the front hood has some small dents in it from people backing into that long nose on the car, and the left front fender has two small dents, and of course, the car has some parking lot dents her & there, nothing major. So, at the end of the day what am I selling? A beautiful car with classic looks, one you can do a "rolling restoration" on, drive it and at the same time, restore a few items at a time, or restore it with the family, and make it part of your history. The car is a very nice example of a 1972 Z, which many consider to be the best year for the American version of he Z. Believe me, if I could, I would like nothing better than to restore it and enjoy it, but I have been given a challenge that is taking all of my energy and time, and will for some time to come. I have about 40 more photos of the car on Photo Bucket, and a soon as I figure out how to make them available for you to see, I will insert it into the listing. Thanks for considering my car, and please contact me with any questions before you buy the car. I have done my best to describe both the good & bad things about the car, but are no refunds once you purchase it, and of course this car is sold "as is" with no warranties of any kind, written or implied. If you have a question, ask. You may also have someone inspect the car for you before you purchase it. Good Luck & Have Fun Bidding!
