Vehicle Detail
All original 1958 Dove Blue Volkswagen SC (single cab), with 90% original paint that still shines nicely after 53 years! Beautiful machine, the one I said I would never sell but I am building a house and priorities have changed. This bus was used most of it's working life delivering vegetables in the northern Bay Area (California). I bought it six years ago and have enjoyed it and taken good care of it, including the following: - Repaired rear corners (done by bus specialist Tim Stark in Rochester, NY ). Treasure chest door replaced with new one (Green Funky by Gerson, the best replacement metal for buses around), and painted by Tim. All wheels painted by him as well, replicating how it was done at the factory; first black on the inside and then Pearl White on the outside with a bit of overspray to the inside. - Found and installed a pristine and original SC-only rear bumper (not a reproduction) in the correct color for the bus, matching the one in the front. This wasn't cheap! - Found a correct 36HP engine (bus came to me with a 1600cc), which it is now installed. - 6V system with new battery and new starter. - New tires - Installed new window rubber throughout. - Ordered a "Birth certificate" from the VW factory in Wolfsburg, Germany (included in the sale) - New brakes - Installed correct, undamaged tailight Hella lenses. These are commonly cracked or reproductions. - Installed NOS Huf ignition with two matching keys. - Installed period-correct Sapphire I AM radio. - Installed a set of original gray commercial hubcaps. - Located and registered 1958 NY license plates (included in the sale) - Located an original Owner's Manual (included in the sale) - NOS windshield washer arms and rubber. - NOS Bilstein front shocks. Other items: - Correct seat upholstery in very good shape, needs some restiching but not ripped. - Original pedal pan, often missing - Perfectly working transmission - Original crank handle (included in the sale), with matching rear apron, engine tin, and pulley nut. - Original ID plate for the bus, in engine compartment. - Original and undamaged logoed windshield glass. Original glass elsewhere. - Original floor jack in great working order. - Spare wheel. I only messed with the few areas that had potentially bad rust, the rest was left original and as such has less than perfect areas (scratches, dings, and dents). There are a few rust holes in the cabin floor at both ends, the rest of the floor is in nice condition. Replacement floor corner panels are readily available and easy to install, if you are so inclined. Dash is uncut and interior cabin area in good, original condition. The interior panels are original, there is a rip in one of the ceiling panels. There is currently an oil leak from the engine, which I hope to fix before the auction ends. The engine is healthy and shows good power (for a 36HP!). The manual choke works great. The reserve gasoline mechanism needs work. The bus came to me with a really old sun visor document holder, which includes a device to mark your mileage when you fill up the tank, so you know when you are due for the next stop at the gas station. Non-emergency buses didn't come with a gas gauge in 58. I bet the document holder has been with the bus since new or almost new, and thus it is going with it. There is a rear view mirror on one side only, just as it came originally. There is a rear view mirror in the cabin that doesn't belong there, but I've left it because it is quite practical. Would be easy to take out. There are a few small holes from the remains of a set of non original side mirrors in the doors. I also have a complete set of wood slats for the bed, cut as the originals and ready to install, which are included in the sale. The photos don't show the treasure chest lock mechanism installed. I do have it and it will be installed by the time the auction ends. The bus is in the North East, but it has been a western bus and as such very dry. I bought it in California and drove it to Oregon where I used to live, and then trucked it to NY when I moved here. Driven in summer only. After 20 years into buses, I have come to the conclusion that SCs and a few other commercial models are the cream of the bus line, at least to me. Bus is registered and insured in my name. The bus is in my garage in Delmar, NY (just south of Albany). Can assist with shipping, if necessary. It drives fine, but if you are planning a long trip make sure you are aware of what it takes to drive a 36HP bus for hours with freeway traffic zooming around you...Not fun. Driving on secondary roads, however, can be a lot of fun. This is not a show winner, but an honest bus that is not hiding any bondo, still showing its original and rust-free rocker panels. The frame is also solid, no rust holes or anything close to that. Both the treasure chest and bed floors are original and show only surface rust. I use this bus to go around town, an ocassional trip to the dump (beware, it gets attention), and trip to a VW show every now and then. The bed in these trucks is exceptionally practical, no fenders get in the way, so you can lay out a sheet of plywood or sheetrock. The three gates open, so it becomes a great work bench. The single cab is designed not for speed but for cargo, you can really load it and it responds just fine. Feel free to contact me with any questions about this bus, I could talk about it for a long, long time!
