This 1998 Ford Explorer XLT 4X4 has been donated to our non-profit organization, and we have not physically driven the vehicle ourselves. We understand that this Explorer runs and drives fine, has 226,500 miles on it, and has always been well maintained. In fact, this summer the Explorer was driven from Virginia to Iowa and back towing an 18' camping trailer, and had no problems at all! This Explorer has a valid Virginia State Inspection that is good until February 2012! This vehicle is in good condition in and out (see pics), and the front rotors and brakes were replaced in July of this year. The Michelin tires are in good shape and have plenty of tread remaining. The AC works well, and the compressor was replaced 2 years ago. The glass, exhaust, and brakes are all in good condition, and the Explorer has had the tie rod ends, serpentine belt, and alternator previously replaced as well. The 4.0 liter V6 runs well (GREAT ENGINE!!!), the automatic transmission shifts as it should, and the vehicle gets approximately 19 -20 mpg. There are no mechanical issues that we are aware of, and the vehicle is driven almost every day. One quirk is that the driver's side seat belt has to be inserted "backwards" (flipped over) to stay latched (easy fix). There is also some minor "checking", or "cracking" in the paint on the rear lift gate, indicating that this area may have been repaired at some point in the past. This is only on the left side of the liftgate above the Explorer emblem near the center assembly (see pics). I have seen this on several Explorers, and I am not sure what the cause is (panel stress?).
