Vehicle Detail
Here you see my original unrestored Malaga Red BMW 2002. I have owned this vehicle for a little over a year. I bought it intending to either restore it or update it for weekend BMWCCA events. My attentions have been diverted by my 1965 230SL and a number of other projects, so the '02 has been mostly a weekend runabout. The engine is in excellent condition, as is the body and glass. The transmission is in very good shape, but makes a very slight amount of bearing noise in 1st gear. Not a grinding or wailing amount of noise, it just sings a little. Watch the video below, and let your ears tell the story. The shifter bushing also need attention, but the linkage and gaiter seem to be in good shape, as are all the synchros. The front seat covers are separating at the seams, but the springs are decent, and a new set of pads and covers would leave them in excellent condition. The rear seat surfaces are very good, while the padding roughly matches the front. The headliner is good, but the panel for the underside of the sunroof is missing. The paint, as you'll see in the photos, is in good shape. Not excellent, but very good. There are a few marks but as a daily driver, it is quite presentable, and as a restoration candidate, the body is well protected. All electrical equipment seems to work, but I have not had cause to test the rear window defroster, and the heater blower is inoperative. All electrical, braking, and other safety devices work very well, as required by the Virginia state inspection, which is current on this car. The engine uses no oil, and has gone no more than 200 miles since it had a full tune-up, including an oil change, valve adjustment, new spark plugs, timing adjustment, and carburetor adjustment. The carburetor is a Weber DGV type with automatic choke. I've never had trouble starting this car, and it always runs smoothly and quietly, with the slight valve clatter which is so familiar to owners of the BMW M10 engine. The odometer shows 66,054 miles but the title shows 170,438 and is marked "ACTUAL," which suggests that the odo has rolled over once. The speedometer seems to read a bit fast, possibly as much as 20%, which I'm told is a sign that the magnets in the speedometer head are feeling their age. All other instruments function as they should. All seals and gaskets are in good condition, except for the trunk seal, which has shrunken to the point of leaving a small gap above the license plate. fortunately, the location of the gap means that the trunk does not seem to leak. The car is fitted with new tires of correct size. As a full vehicle report would be a bit wordy to write here, feel free to contact me via eBay message with any and all of your questions!
