Up for sale is a 2003 Toyota RAV4 EV. This is an ALL ELECTRIC VEHICLE which has NO onboard fossil fuel engine. Pictures are of actual vehicle up for auction & were taken September 12, 2011. I am selling it for the current owner & local inspections are welcome. This is an ORIGINAL Toyota factory made EV and not an aftermarket conversion. Just imagine driving by all those gas stations with ever needing any gasoline (but you could stop in for a beverage or a snack). Two Tone Super White & Silver exterior color with a light charcoal/blue interior. VIN JT3GS10V830002761, mileage 71,1XX as of 09/15/11. Mileage upon delivery will vary slightly based on the fact the vehicle is a blast to drive and still driven as needed. The Details 1,484 RAV4 EV units were made between 1997 and 2003 & more than half are still on the road today. These cars featured prominently in the Sony Pictures Documentary Who Killed the Electric Car? This eco-friendly vehicle was produced at a reported cost to Toyota of $100,000(US$) per vehicle and sold exclusively in California until their last year of production when limited sales were available throughout the US Toyota dealer network. This one stickered at $42,510.00 in 2003. This is a two-owner vehicle purchased from the original owner in 2006 with 20,000+ miles on odometer and shipped via covered transport from California to its new home in northern New Jersey. Photos are of the actual vehicle up for auction. Currently driven, registered and insured in New Jersey. The NJ State inspection is good until March 2013. Yes, in New Jersey they do a full safety inspection as well as emissions testing every two years on used vehicles. While it is amusing to watch the inspection crew trying to locate the tailpipe and gas cap (there are none on a RAV4 EV) they do a great job in checking all the lights, turn signals, mirrors, brakes, tires, horn and other safety features on your vehicle. Then they slap a little sticker on the windshield so the police can leave you alone for two years. All scheduled maintenance was regularly done by either Hudson Toyota or Caldwell Toyota in NJ – both are Toyota dealerships with great EV certified & knowledgeable technicians on the East Coast. On the West Coast the RAV4 EV was serviced at Toyota of Berkeley and delivered new at San Francisco Toyota. We do have service records / logs. This RAV4 EV gets close to 80 miles (cold NJ winter), to 100 miles in warm weather on a full charge. I just did a few trips around 70 miles each and still had more than a quarter left on the “State Of Charge” aka SOC meter both times. My driving was normal and at speeds between 25 to 65 MPH on the trips. You can probably get better results with a modified driving style but I drove it like I do a gas powered vehicle. A fully depleted battery pack takes about five hours to charge and costs between 80 cents to $1.50 on average. My two trips which drained the battery pack down to ¼ charge took four hours to get back to 100%. Yes, some will argue that you can only go 100 miles on a charge but the average American drives less than 40 miles a day and you can’t beat the trip cost vs. a gas powered vehicle in day to day average driving. If you want to visit your dear Aunt Mabel in Boca and you live clear across the country, fly there or rent a car for that once a year trip. The RAV4 EV is still cheaper than buying a gas powered car for that once a year long trip and living with rising fuel costs. A monitoring software package, RAV4Info, displays critical functions via an installed Palm interface cable in the cabin. Palm Pilot with RAV4Info software is included. The windshield was replaced in April 2006 with a factory Toyota part and is a non-heated (electric) windshield. Original windshield was heated but they don’t stock them anywhere. The dash switch and wiring is still there but has been de-activated. The 12VDC regular car battery used to run accessories was replaced in 2007. Four new matching Yokohama AVS EF1 low rolling resistance 195/80R16 tires were installed on the factory alloy rims in February, 2011. The factory radio, which we still have, was upgraded to a Pioneer AVH-P4900DVD In-Dash DVD, CD, CD with MP3/WMA Player with AM/FM, IPOD cabled & installed (Pioneer CD-IB100ii adapter) with in dash 6.5” screen for DVD playback & Touch screen control. This system also accepts SAT Radio, and there is cabling run to the rear cargo area for additional video & audio feeds so you can hook up a computer & it will display on the front screen or watch DVDs while tailgating. A Hands free Motorola Bluetooth system with hardwired mic & an Apple iPhone charger interface is installed as is a Garmin nuvi GPS system. This is one loaded EV. Only other modification is a professionally installed external 50Amp waterproof marine receptacle on the driver’s side rear panel with cabling to a Manzanita Micro PFC-50 charger in the vehicle. The PFC-50 costs around $3,500 and allows for a secondary charging point using 110VAC or 220VAC power source. The PFC-50 is not permanently mounted in the vehicle; it is removable and available for an additional cost. (See www evnut com. Click on left Rav4EV, then at the top bar choose “Mods” – The PFC50 conversion document is about 3/4 the way down on the web page). You can use this feature if you wish. We will provide documentation and an explanation to the new owner. Charging the batteries using 110VAC requires a longer charge cycle than using 220VAC. A set of Air Lift 1000 air bag shock absorbers were installed professionally by the current owner to aid in handling and help level the ride when a CARB Approved generator on a custom rear hitch was used with the PFC-50 charger. We can remove the hitch if the buyer wishes. This modification was done as a proof of concept and demonstrated to members of the Senate and House of Representatives in response to the widely circulated belief that a PHEV (Plug-In Hybrid Electrical Vehicle) was not yet practical given the state of technology. These demonstrations were given before the current generation of PHEVs became a reality. As for pricing of this unique vehicle we found that a 2001 white RAV4 EV sold for $69,800 on Ebay on May 25, 2008. Road & Track magazine just did a feature in their March 2009 issue on EVs and stated that a RAV4 EV recently sold on Ebay for $71,000. I personally sold a similarly converted 2002 RAV4 EV on Ebay for another friend of mine two years ago for $40,000. I have been an EBay member for over 13 years and strive for 100% feedback. This RAV4 EV is 100% road worthy and just needs a new owner. We have set a fair market reserve on this vehicle. This RAV4 EV up for sale has good batteries with no degradation. The owner estimates the battery pack to be good for another 70K miles and several EV companies have successfully regenerated battery packs with 200K miles on them and gotten plenty more miles & years out of them. Unlike the Lithium battery packs in the newer EVs, these Nickel-Metal Hydride batteries have no problem charging and operating in varied temperatures. This RAV4 EV has the California HOV lane stickers and the certificate, indicating it is a zero-emission vehicle (ZEV) and is okay to travel in the carpool lane with only one occupant. Several cities across America also let you drive in the HOV lane and/or get free parking downtown when driving a ZEV or Hybrid vehicle. So not only do you save money by not ever purchasing gasoline & oil changes, you can save on parking (in certain areas) and most importantly save time & reduce stress by being able to cruise in the HOV lane. This RAV4 EV is totally electric; it has NO gasoline or fossil fuel tank. It operates completely on its own rechargeable stored power and regenerative capability. It does require a special AC charger (included with purchase) that uses a 240VAC 40AMP feed. You can install it in your carport or garage. Some cities even have free public charging stations so you can recharge while at work or play and save even more money by not having to pay for the electricity to power the vehicle. Check with your municipality for charger compatibility. The wall mounted 240VAC Magne Charge charger with power level indicator lights is an Inductive charger. This is one of the safest ways to plug in the vehicle because there is no metal-to-metal contact between the charger and the car thus preventing electrocution. The weather proof plug-in receptacle is located in the vehicle’s front grill for ease of use. There is a switch on the dash to open the charger port flap door & this RAV4 EV has the common Velcro (hook & loop) upgrade on the flap door so you don’t have to get inside of the vehicle to open the port. This auction includes a wall mount charger with the vehicle purchase and an additional portable version of the wall mounted unit. We will have both ready for pickup along with the vehicle provided you are the winning & paid in full buyer. The chargers should be installed by a licensed electrician and in accordance to any local building codes. The Magne Chargers have built-in GFCI circuits so no need for an expensive GFCI breaker in your home’s power panel. The new owner will be responsible for the install of the chargers. Currently they work fine and are both in service providing a charge to the vehicle as needed. Please note that the maximum driving range of this vehicle is approximately 100 miles. If you purchase it and live further than 100 miles from northern New Jersey, the vehicle will have to be transported (at your cost) to your final destination. VEHICLE CONDITION & SERVICE Garage kept and in great condition inside and out. Nonsmoker owned & operated. Original RAV4 EV factory floor mats, cloth seats, fully carpeted. This vehicle is currently owned by a dog owner so if you have pet allergies we are letting you know upfront that a hypoallergenic dog or two have ridden in this vehicle several times and we while we will make every effort to deliver a clean, vacuumed & lint brushed vehicle we cannot guarantee a 100% pet dander free vehicle. Exterior condition: Excellent for an eight year old vehicle. This is a daily driver and as such it may have some minor imperfections as you would expect from a typical used car. The windshield is clear (replaced in 2007) and has no defects. The headlights and other exterior lighting are in great working condition and the lenses are crystal clear. This is NOT a Brand New Off-the-Showroom vehicle. It is a great unique used vehicle with low mileage and a way for you to be environmentally conscience and do your part to reduce America’s dependency for foreign & domestic oil. To our knowledge there is no evidence of bodywork. All body panels, trim, etc. are original. The body panels are straight but there may be some minor parking lot dings. There are also a few nicks minor scratches with the most noticeable one on the driver’s side rear wheel arch (see pictures). Interior condition: In Great shape. The center rear seat belt has some nicks in it caused by getting caught between the seats when they are flipped up (common in storable seat vehicles). Factory original carpets are clean and in great shape. Factory RAV4 EV floor mats in seating areas. All interior lights (including instrument panel and console lights) are in working condition. Owned by a non-smoker & dog owner as mentioned earlier. Service is up to date. Since the RAV4 EV does not have a traditional engine, it has minimal maintenance needs. There is no engine oil or transmission fluid maintenance required. All that is required on Toyota’s scheduled maintenance every 6 months is rotating the tires and a general inspection. Besides that you may have to change some coolant and routine brake service every few years along with wiper blades and tires. Here are Some additional but not all the ORIGINAL FACTORY equipment and Features on this RAV4 EV. We tried to cover all of them but may have missed a few. Anti-lock braking (ABS) system. Dual front driver & passenger air bags for safety. Full factory instrumentation showing Battery level and voltage meter along with speedometer. RAV4 EV Info center which lets you set the charging time to save even more on electricity. NOTE- Most utilities have cheaper rates at night so this feature lets you take advantage of this feature by setting the charge time and not having to stay up late to plug in the vehicle. Instrument panel light dimmer. Front door storage bins and under seat storage. Selectable Snow Driving Mode. In dash Digital clock. Front and rear ashtrays with cig /accessory lighter in front console. Coil holder & two cup holders in center console. Low tire pressure warning light on the instrument panel. Aftermarket cruise control Tire pressure “Set” switch used only by EV service technicians. Selectable Engine Braking (EB/B) driving modes which can recharge the EV’s batteries during downhill driving or braking. Fully retractable manual antenna accessible while in the driver seat. We don’t recommend doing this while driving :-) Dual Power side mirrors, which can be folded in manually when parked. Intermittent wipers for both windshield and rear window with wiper fluid sprayers for both front and rear. Cabin heat and CFC free Air Conditioning. True story – You can lock your pet in the vehicle with the AC or heat on and the windows rolled up and they will stay comfy. Owner did it a few times and once a lady ran into the restaurant in a panic thinking the dog would die. The owner took the upset woman over to the vehicle and she saw the dog was resting comfortably in an air conditioned interior. This vehicle makes little or no sound so people don’t know it is on. When you turn the ignition key nothing happens beside the READY light coming on. When you’re driving all you hear are the wheels turning and the fan if it is on. Front and rear window defrosters. Fresh air and circulating air control for air conditioning. Pre-heat and Pre-cool option allows you to program vehicle to adjust inside temp before you get in making it a more comfortable driving experience than most cars. See Dog story above. Power Door Locks with child safety lock feature on rear doors Power lock/unlock switch for all four doors & rear cargo door are located at driver and front passenger armrests. NOTE - . This is a 2003 and before they made keyless remotes standard for all cars so you have to turn the key to get in but it does have central lock/unlock and the driver’s door. Two keys. Power windows with Driver’s window one-touch open / close function. Rear windows can be locked from the driver’s seat for additional child safety. Heated front cloth seats with dual heat settings & seat back pockets for storage. Seating capacity for 5. Plenty of leg room and rear storage. I’m 6 ft. 4 inches tall and a big guy and I have plenty of room while driving. The seats are comfy and these old RAV4s have plenty or head room and height inside. Split fold-down/flip up rear seats; with detachable rear seat head rests. Three anchor brackets on the cargo bay floor for tie-down points and for securing child car seats placed in the rear seating area. There are also straps on each rear seat for use in the folded position. Original “EV” and “Electric Vehicle” blue decals on front doors, rear air intake vents on both quarter panels, and cargo door. Original owner’s manuals, zipper case and accompanying documentation. Compact spare tire located underneath the rear floor of the vehicle with tire jack under passenger seat. Unlike a gas powered RAV4, the spare tire is stowed under the vehicle where the gas tank would normally be vs. hanging on the rear hatch giving you more visibility out back and better weight distribution. Single Speed Conductive or Inductive Transmission Suspension (F/R): Independent MacPherson Strut/Double Wishbone Coil Spring Electro-Hydraulic Power Assisted Steering Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS): 4-wheel equipped Front Disk & Drum Rear with Regenerative Braking: Equipped Thanks to the RAV4 EV community & Toyota for various information on the web for the brief information: The RAV4 EV is powered by a maintenance-free permanent magnet motor which produces 50kW of power equivalent to a traditional 67-horsepower gasoline engine from 3,100-4,600 rpm and 190Nm of torque which is approximately140 lb-ft. of torque from 0-1,500 rpm. An electric motor produces peak torque immediately so there are no shifting gears involved. The front wheels are driven by the motor through a single speed transaxle. Reverse is accomplished by spinning the motor backwards and activating a reverse gear. Energy storage and vehicle power is provided by a sealed, maintenance-free nickel-metal hydride (NiMH) battery pack consisting of 24 nickel-metal hydride (Ni-MH) 12V batteries for a total voltage of 288 volts Toyota achieved a low center of gravity and minimized intrusion into the passenger compartment by locating the NiMH battery pack under the floor. Typical recharge time is 6 to 8 hrs depending on drained state and by charging late at night most owners take advantage of reduced electric usage rates. This can be done automatically by setting up the time of day charge feature. You can also charge the vehicle immediately if needed. Maximum speed is a factory preset governed 78 MPH. 0-60 in 16.1 seconds. EPA is 106 city & 130 highway but most folks typically get 100 miles before they need to plug in. Mileage per full charge ranges with in-city driving providing better results due to regenerative braking which recharges the batteries more frequently due to stop n go driving vs. highway driving. Driving style also affects your range of distance per charge. Driving slower gets better mileage. Seasonal conditions are also a factor –Here in New Jersey typical results are 80 miles in coldest of winter per charge and 100+ miles in the summer. The RAV4 EV braking system features solid aluminum front discs, steel rear drums, integral anti-lock system (ABS) and a sophisticated regenerative system which returns energy to the batteries when the vehicle is coasting or braking. Efficiency of this system extends the vehicle’s operating range to approximately 25 percent more in city driving than on the highway, when the brakes are not used as frequently. Toyota Motor Corporation discontinued production of the RAV4 Electric Vehicle in the spring of 2003. The vehicle sold far faster than expected, and after just eight months, the retail program was terminated. In the USA RAV4 EVs were only available for sale or lease at few selected dealers in the Los Angeles and San Francisco area beginning in 2001. The first RAV4 EVs were mainly fleet vehicles in Southern California and the Bay Area. Toyota just announced they are coming out with a second generation of 2012 RAV4 EV in partnership with Tesla Motors but no release date has been set. Unlike other car manufacturers (GM & Honda), Toyota did not recall the leased vehicles, destroy them, and/or completely terminate the program. Toyota did, however cease sales one day after the California ZEV mandate was terminated by the substitution of PZEV (Hybrid) vehicles Several municipalities, both state & local, along with utility providers used the RAV4 EV as fleet vehicles to reduce their dependency on fuel and promoted eco-friend driving options. Southern California Edison, the nations’ largest electrical utility provider, still maintains an active fleet of RAV4 EVs. Some they report have lasted more than 10 years and over 1000,000 miles on the original battery packs. The New York City Department of Parks & Recreation also used the RAV4 EV as a way to reduce carbon emissions in NYC. Road & Track magazine just reported that Toyota is working on a program with the city of Portland Oregon to use refurbished RAV4 EVs as shuttles between mass transit terminals to downtown and suburban locations. While no longer sold, know that the RAV4 EV is still Toyota supported and is driven daily by hundreds of lucky owners. You could be the next lucky one!
