Vehicle Detail
1937 CHEVROLET MASTER TWO DOOR SEDAN HISTORY The 1937 Chevrolet Master and Master Deluxe was touted as "The complete car, completely new" in ads. Retooling had cost $26 million, an astronomical figure by the standards of the time. Not since 1929 had Chevrolets been altered so completely. Impressive new styling of the 1937 Chevrolet Master and Master Deluxe was the work of Jules Agramonte, who had designed the stunning 1934 LaSalle. A trend-setting highlight, referred to by GM chief designer Harley Earl as the "diamond crown speedline," was a body crease that started in the valley between the engine compartment and front fender, and extended across the cowl and onto the front door. Smaller 16-inch wheels contributed to a lower profile. A strengthened version of the box girder frame, introduced on the 1936 Standard cars, was used throughout the 1937 line. Bodies, wider and roomier than before, were made entirely of steel instead of the traditional composite construction, and weight was reduced by more than 150 pounds. Beneath the hood was a brand new engine. Still featuring overhead valves, it had a shorter stroke and a larger bore than the previous unit. Displacement was increased slightly, to 216.5 cubic inches, and four main bearings were fitted instead of three. Horsepower was rated at 85, same as the Ford V-8. All models now enjoyed the advantage of an improved synchromesh transmission. The 1937 Chevy Master featured in this auction is a rust free car that has been treated to a very good amateur restoration. The current mileage is 60,777. It is believed to be the actual mileage, but is exempted on the Indiana title in the owner’s name. CONDITION This 1937 Chevy Master is a very presentable restored car. The black paint has a nice shine and the body is straight. The interior is freshly done in incorrect, but nice materials. The chrome is very nicely replated. I drove the car this week and it runs and drives nicely. The engine has some valvetrain noise as most of these do. The oil is clean, fresh plugs. The engine has about 100 pounds of compression on each cylinder. The brakes have been freshly done. New brake system includes all new shoes, wheel cylinders, rubber lines, and the front to back metal line. New master cylinder and brake light switch. I Ran it up to 45mph for a couple of miles and it did just fine. Not sure that I would push it much above that due to the age of the tires etc. All gauges work, lights work, (not real bright…) wipers work off a pull tab below the dash. It has a voltage converter for the am-fm cassette player. Has an owner’s manual, sales brochure, and shop manual. DETAILS This is a Beautifully restored Chevy Master that you can drive to Cruise Ins and shows right now. You can get into the Chevy Collector car hobby with a very nice turnkey restored car. I believe that this Two Door Sedan can be driven to any destination if you have the time! It is freshly serviced and ready to go. I have done my best to make an accurate detailed description of this car.
