Vehicle Detail

Here's your chance to own and DRIVE a true halo car - from the heyday of the American automobile. Only 44,277 ACTUAL MILES! The Continental Division of Ford Motor Company was created in 1955 as Ford wanted a superior and standalone up-market brand aside from Lincoln, to compete with General Motors Cadillac and Chrysler's DeSoto brands. The price of a new Mark II in 1956 ($10,000) was the price of a Rolls-Royce or two Cadillacs. The new Continental was not intended to be the largest nor the most powerful automobile, rather the most luxurious and elegant American car available, designed to recapture the spirit of the great classics of the prewar period—with prices to match. The Mark II's inspiration was the celebrated V12 powered Lincoln Continental of the 1940s, among the most notable cars of that War-interrupted decade. Roughly 3,000 Mark IIs were produced in the two year model run and Ford reportedly lost money on every car. Some notable owners were Elvis, Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly and Louis Armstrong. This particular Mark II has been in a private collection since the mid 1970s. Since I acquired the car I have completely gone through the brake system, fuel system, carb and brought it back it a good running, driving car. It is a nice original car that has had restoration work as needed through the years. These are great investments and considered to be one of the only postwar "classics". I have driven this car over 300 miles to various shows with no trouble. Fly in, drive home. Thank you.On Sep-07-11 at 10:15:10 PDT, seller added the following information: I purchased this beautiful car from the estate of a private collector in Rhode Island in early 2011. It is an older restoration (10-15 years ago) and has been stored in dry, clean storage since the restoration. For valuation, the vehicle condition most closely fits the "NADA Average Retail Value" description, which states "The vehicle would be in good condition overall. It could be an older restoration or a well-maintained original vehicle. Completely operable. The exterior paint, trim, and mechanics are presentable and serviceable inside and out. A 20-footer." The engine and drivetrain are in excellent condition. It always starts right up, with no smoke from the tailpipes, no lifter noise or rod knock. Oil pressure measures consistently 40 psi. There is no measureable oil consumption. I have changed the oil twice since putting her back on the road; it comes out clean and free of any metallic particles. The 3 speed automatic shifts correctly and smoothly. The drivetrain U-joints and front suspension are tight. Brakes work as well as can be expected for a 5000 lb car with drums on all four wheels. Power steering and power brakes no problems. Generator and radiator no problems. Exhaust is in good condition and stock configuration. The paint is a beautifully done lacquer paint job, which still has excellent gloss. It is starting to show its age as it has developed a few cracks, as lacquer does. There are also a few stone chips in the driver door, which are visible in the pictures. Working: Lights, wipers, heater, radio, driver and passenger power windows, horn, all engine guages (except fuel guage), odometer, tachometer; both the speedometer and clock run fast. Needs attention: fuel guage (sending unit), quarter windows and vent windows are sticky from lack of use, vacuum power antenna.
