1981 Mercedes Benz 300D (Non-Turbo) This is one of best years for the W123 model line. I am the third owner of this extremely nice original Texas vehicle. The original owner and her husband bought it new in 1981, and due to failing health it was sold to the second Texas owner through an estate sale by her family. He registered it in February 2010, and I purchased it in April 2010 with 134,150 miles and brought it to San Diego. It currently has 142,991 miles. The original owner took very good care of this car, as you can see by the pictures. It has the original owners service records, operator and maintenance books, even the Mercedes Benz metal service card and MB build sheet. This is an excellent car in very good condition, with very low mileage (approx 4500 miles/year) for a 1981 model. No turbo means less issues, repairs, and expense, but it still has plenty of power with its standard 3.46 final drive. 1981 non-turbo cars also benefitted from updated climate controls that were used through the 1985 model year, rather than the troublesome pre-’81 climate control systems. 1981 was certainly the best year of the non-turbos. Exterior – The paint is in very good condition, other than some minor imperfections here and there, but there is no rust on the body or frame, again this was a dry Texas car from day one. Chrome impeccable. Original glass. Excellent rubber. Corrected ride height. Within the last 500 miles, I installed European Bumpers, European Headlamps, and imported and installed a fully reconditioned set of 15” Bundt Alloy Wheels. (Original bumpers and headlamps are available) Mechanical - This car was pampered and from the service records it seems to have always got what it needed. It drives excellent, straight, solid, and smooth like the W123 it is. The A/C was converted to R134 and it blows cold and works well. The steering is tight, the transmission shifts smoothly, and the door locks work as they should, meaning no vacuum leaks. No engine or transmission leaks, either. Following are some of the upgrades to the car since January 2010: Within the last 500 miles: New Pirelli P4000 215/60-15” tires, New front MB OEM Rotors and Pads, four (4) New Bilstein HD shock absorbers, corrected ride height with new spring tower spacers. Additionally, new cruise control module, vacuum modulator (with hoses, lines, connectors), manual control idle cable, steering (key) lock, motor & trans mounts, suspension drag link, MB hood pad, Behr radiator, valve adjustment, and fuel filters. Interior - Excellent condition. Blaupunct San Francisco AM/FM CD player with Boston Acoustic speakers (Original Becker radio available). Switches look and feel firm. Seats are firm like when they were new. No dash cracks. Carpets look new. Wood excellent. Original glass all around.
